Washing period pants

Talk to me about washing period pants please?
DD10 has just started wearing them as her period has suddenly got a lot heavier.
I think I read no fabric conditioner, is that right?
And what about tumble drying, yes or no?

No tumble drying and no fabric softener

Lcb123 · 26/02/2023 11:49

Yep no fabric conditioner or tumble dryer. I rinse and wash with other underwear and socks. But I try and make sure they dry quickly like on the radiator otherwise they smell damp

Jellycats4life · 26/02/2023 11:53

I have a big soaking bucket that sits in the bath. A long soak in cold water, wringing out several times, then into the washing machine. I never use fabric softener for anything. Also don’t tumble dry because period pants are too expensive to risk ruining.

Bless her, 10 is so young to start. My daughter was 10 as well.

Sorry to jump on this, but dd is likely to start her periods for the first time soon and we have bought period pants.

I can't seem to figure out the logistics though. I'm guessing they need to be washed or at least rinsed daily, but using the machine everyday would be wasteful. Rinsing and leaving wet for a weekly wash unhygienic.

What do people do?

Thanks

Radi06music · 26/02/2023 11:57

We put them in a bucket dry for maybe three days, then put them in the washing machine in a rinse, then put them on a delicate wash, no softener. Dry in clothes horse by radiator. My DD has been using same ones for four years no issues

Radi06music · 26/02/2023 11:57

Sorry for typos

When it comes to this, I think you just have to suck it up, it's only once a month.

I rinse/soak when I change, and try and do three pairs within 48h. So the first pair waits over a day, second under a day, and the third not at all. A quick wash is fine, because there's only a couple of things in.

For any others, I bring the wash forward a day or they just coordinate anyway.

Puffalicious · 26/02/2023 12:03

Same as above- although I use reusable pads not pants and find them great- store dry in a nappy sack or small, lidded container until I'm doing a towel and bedding wash at 60 degrees, or an underwear/ socks/ muddy (3 rugby boys here, so bloody loads of that!) wash, which isn't long 2/3 days max.

I also take a zip- lock, thick plastic sleeve in my hand-bag for when I'm out/ at work and need to change. The pads are clever though and fold over to be clipped into a small bundle if you don't have anything.

Age 10. Bless her. It's a damn scourge.

Yeknom · 26/02/2023 12:08

Never tumble dry - but it really depends on the brand. Some you can use fabric conditioner with!

I rinse in cold water, or put them in the bottom of shower and have a good stomp :). Then bung them in with all the other washing on a 40 degree wash (again, some brands should be washed at 30deg).

reluctantbrit · 26/02/2023 12:11

I collect them in a washbag and throw them into the machine every day in the first 2 days as DD and I have very heavy periods and go through 3-4 pants per day (even the heavy/overnight ones).

I set the washing machine on a rinse cycle, I found that more effective than rinsing by hand.

After that I wash them on 20 degrees with Persil bio, no conditioner (don't use it anyway) and no dryer.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/02/2023 12:14

We rinse under the tap after wearing and store in a zipped wet bag. At the end of the period bung in the washing machine on a cold rinse then a quick wash with detergent suitable for delicates so often woolite or similar.

hettiethehare · 26/02/2023 12:18

DD wear this - I bought her a set of 7 (have another DD so will be able to hand them down) - we do a darks wash every other day so that amount works well for us. Soak (I've found that the food caddies the council issue with lids are a brilliant size) and then bung in the wash as normal without fabric conditioner and fish them out before the rest goes in the tumbledryer.

DD doesn't have very heavy periods yet though, so gets through a max of 2-3 pairs a day.

FawnFrenchieMum · 26/02/2023 12:29

Thanks everyone. I’ve bought her a tub for the bathroom to put them and and have just put them in the wash with some pjs and bits she’s leaked on.
Poor little love. This is her third proper one but much much heavier then the others.

the thing that’s made a difference of for us is having lots of pairs now. I bought DD 6 cheeky wipes ones but I’ve added primark/M&S ones and it takes the pressure to wash away.
The cheeky wipes ones are great but take a lot of drying!

YourWinter · 26/02/2023 12:49

Oh bless her. It’s a dreadful mistake of nature to have periods start so very young. My sister and I, and both my daughters, were all 13, my mother was 15. I hope she gets on with period pants, products have really moved on since the 1960s, thank goodness. 💐

Theoldwoman · 26/02/2023 12:49

Your poor girl starting at 10.

Anyway to answer the question, my 21 year old uses them, and I just chuck them in with dark loads on cold with Aldi powder. Line dry always.

I do a load every day anyway. My DD just changes them a few times a day ( she has heaps of pairs)

Ladyofthesea · 26/02/2023 12:52

I rinse them when I take them off and wash them every other day, but I do have a full load by then. They don't grow mold by being wet for -at most- 48 hours.

Perfect28 · 26/02/2023 12:57

Rinse well in cold water before washing as normal with a load.

BabsDylan · 26/02/2023 13:04

They are not supposed to be dried on the radiator either (the Modibodi ones anyway).

i rinse in cold water then wash in the machine on a ❄️ wash. I do an extra spin then hang on clothes horse (with dehumidifer) or on the line if nice weather. They do take a while to dry.

CluelessHamster · 26/02/2023 13:07

I put them in the machine on a cold rinse (as basically cba doing anything else!) then wash at 40 and dry on the airer (live in a flat otherwise would line dry). Occasionally a pair has accidentally got in the tumble dryer and survived ok but wouldn't do that routinely.

shopmyfeelings · 26/02/2023 14:49

I've got a wash bag that I got with my snag tights so I do them in there with non-bio. They air dry in the bathroom or sometimes on the heated airer if I need them quicker.

HappenstanceMarmite · 26/02/2023 15:17

Do these feel squelchy after a while once they get a bit full? And what about smell? I’ve never liked the feeling of blood glooping out of me, so never wore towels so I’m keen to hear how you all get on with these aspects?

No squelch at all. Even on my absolute heavy day I don't feel like I am sitting in a wet nappy.
Yes, I feel the flow but that never bothered me as it is absorbed immediately. With pads I never felt secure, especially not when out for longer or sleeping. The pants are absolutely a life changer for me.

I never smell myself, neither do I smell DD and also DH hasn't said anything.

I can't wear tampons or a cup since DD's birth though.

MelonFarmer · 26/02/2023 17:01

I tumble dry
I know you're not supposed to but I'm lazy. Hasn't affected any of my pairs and they are all at least 2 years old. Brands I dry are mostly Modibodi but also Period. and Wukka.
