Washing period pants

Talk to me about washing period pants please?
DD10 has just started wearing them as her period has suddenly got a lot heavier.
I think I read no fabric conditioner, is that right?
And what about tumble drying, yes or no?

I rinse as soon as I've taken them off then chuck them in the machine to wait for the next wash. I only do two types of wash; whites once a week and then everything else as soon as the basket is full so every 2-3 days. So they are never hanging around long.

mindutopia · 26/02/2023 17:19

I wash mine as normal same as everything else. In wash with normal washing powder and then either hung to fry or tumble dryer depending on how lazy.

I put mine into a wet bag like this which you can get from any place that sells period pants but mine holds a lot as it is a reusable nappy one.

I put all my pants from my period into the washing machine at the end of my period and put it on a cold rinse cycle to remove the blood. I then add bathroom towels and put it on to wash on 40 degree, no fabric softener. I never tumble them, just put them on an airer to dry. Cheeky wipes ones are great as their absorbent layer runs from the front waistband all the way to the back waistband but they take longer to dry and I don't love the fabric. Wuka ones are incredibly comfortable.

I used reusable nappies 17 years ago and went over to reusable sanitary pads at the same time, then progressed onto period pants several years ago. I think they are an amazing invention that feel like normal underwear and allow you to wear them before your period starts which is especially good for young girls/teens in school.

Shesinthegym · 26/02/2023 17:44

How long does one pair last? I’m thinking of how my dd would change them at school?
I used reusable nappies and wipes with my dc so used to the washing situation.

Alakazam8 · 26/02/2023 17:54

I’ve used fabric conditioner on 3 pairs of dd’s by mistake today- will it damage them as a one off?

Xanthan · 26/02/2023 18:01

I follow what Modibodi advised. Rinse & squeeze under cold water tap until they run clear. (Never soak as it degrades the fibres). Then I hang them up somewhere & in a way that there is airflow around the gusset / not bunched up. Once my cycle is over, I put them in the machine at 30c, wool/handwash cycle setting with 100ml wool wash (one of the layers in MB is wool). I live in a hard water area which is why I use as much as 100ml. Once out, I hang in the same way as before until bone dry before packing away again.

Xanthan · 26/02/2023 18:04

If you accidentally tumble dry them they will more than likely be fine, but do not make a habit of it or they will break down and become ineffective. They do not like softeners either. I found a wool wash more than adequate. No smells.

Dd has 12 pairs. I just machine wash every other day during her period.

She wears a pad as well at school as changing pants at school is inconvenient.

My DD wears three pairs each day. Fresh pair in the morning, change when she gets in from school and then again before bed.

She rinses when she takes them off and puts them in a wet bag. I wash them whenever I'm doing a dark wash (they're all black), so verbally every other day.

40degrees, non bio powder and no softener. Air dry either outside or on airer.

doadeer · 26/02/2023 18:09

I tumble dry mine because I'm . lazy it hasn't seemed to effect them. I do a washing load every day anyway. I wouldnt fancy leaving them a long number of days.

bellinisurge · 26/02/2023 18:10

Rinse out in cold water. Wash as normal (no conditioner). Air dry.

Shesinthegym · 26/02/2023 18:12

Thank you @Gazelda and @mamnotmum

This is what dd does too. Changes pad at lunch. I keep them in a closed plastic bag in the laundry and wash them all at the end (she has lots!)- rinse cycle first then on at 30 with other dark delicates .

handsoffate · 26/02/2023 18:24

Bucket soak in Napisan, wash on 60 degrees and tumble dry on low heat. Still in good condition after multiple washes.

DD wears the heavy/overnight ones from Modibodi at school and they last until she is back at 4pm.

katsue · 26/02/2023 18:50

I have a 15 minute wash on the machine that I set to cold. My DD puts the pants straight in the machine and I rinse however many pairs are in there then add them to the normal wash. No fabric softener, line or radiator dry. I do add napisan occasionally.

She wears three pairs a day, one for school, change at 3.10ish when she gets home and then a new pair overnight. Modibodi are good, Wuka ones are fine too. I do encourage her to wear a disposable pad if she's going to be out of the house longer as she can bin that part way through the day.

Twinedpeaks · 26/02/2023 19:35

Did they not come with wash instructions OP? Which brand? All are different as you'll see from the answers on here. I use a mix of cheeky wipes and modi bodi and rinse in cold water immediately till clear, leave soaking till I have enough for a wash, then they go on a hand wash cycle with no conditioner. Dry in airee not tumble

HappenstanceMarmite · 27/02/2023 20:39

reluctantbrit · 26/02/2023 16:10

No squelch at all. Even on my absolute heavy day I don't feel like I am sitting in a wet nappy.
Yes, I feel the flow but that never bothered me as it is absorbed immediately. With pads I never felt secure, especially not when out for longer or sleeping. The pants are absolutely a life changer for me.

I never smell myself, neither do I smell DD and also DH hasn't said anything.

I can't wear tampons or a cup since DD's birth though.

Thanks for this info ☺️

Gosh what a lot of hassle. Bucket in the bath? 🤮. Dd1 uses period pants exclusively. We have them from cheeky, primark and sone Amazon brand which are the ones I like least. Dd does this folding thing with them like a little parcel and puts them in the hamper. Never thought they smell and I'm very sensitive to odours.

Always machine washed and tumbled all of them. They seem fine.

That said she also has modi bodi bikini bottoms which are amazing and I'm very careful with them. Mostly because they were £££££

Jellycats4life · 27/02/2023 23:54

You think soaking period pants is gross but currently aren’t rinsing them out at all before putting them in the washing machine?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 28/02/2023 00:44

They dry faster if you turn them inside out.

groovergirl · 28/02/2023 01:00

Blimey, I so wish period pants and reusable pads had been available in my day! Actually, I wish I'd invented them. DD uses them, and they are excellent.

We have a plastic tub in which DD soaks her sanpro in cold water. I use the bloody water as garden fertiliser; the roses love it. At the end of the period we do a final cold water rinse by hand, then the items are into the machine on a regular hot wash, followed by a line dry.

If you have a garden, it will welcome that yummy delicious blood in rinse water.

RiverSkater · 28/02/2023 01:05

Small lidded bucket in bathroom with cold water and bio washing powder in it, pants go in to soak then get thrown into a main wash whenever it is put on.
