Wearing period pants every day between cycles. Yes or no?

Are there any down sides (aside from the expense) of wearing period pants every day between periods? DD15 has ASD and is severely anxious about having to deal with periods at school to the point she’s struggling to attend (she’s not in MS). Her periods are not yet regular.

She feels secure if she has protection from period pants and it makes her life easier; she also finds them comfortable. I’m planning to order her multiple pairs of high protection pants to wear every day between cycles to help her.

DH thinks I’m mad. Are there any reasons this is not a good idea?

modobodi say to wash without fabric conditioner. That might make them last longer.

I bought a large bundle and wash them on their own, every 10 days. I don’t tumble them.

Perhaps buy some cheap part coverage ones, Primark do some where the coverage is just in the crotch section instead of all the way up to the waistband.

However, with every wash you will be making them less absorbant etc, they only last so long so I would keep a particular set separate for actual period days, and then just use others for 'just in case' days.

Exactly this

BrightSparkInTheDark · 26/02/2023 10:23

We have agreed to buy 5 pairs of the highest protection for everyday use on school days and also to keep a set of 3 to one side for period days.

Does this sound like enough? I can wash them daily so she will always have clean pairs.

In terms of cost, you only need 5-6 pairs surely and then wash them during the weekend? So that sounds like a worthwhile investment.

Shouldbedoing · 26/02/2023 10:24

Fabric conditioner stops the pants 'wicking' away moisture. Same rules for goretex or other breathable sports clothing

Brendabigbaps · 26/02/2023 10:25

I do!
periods are so erratic, although very light,
I wear the ones you get at sainsbury (£10 a pair) they’re comfy and soft.

It'll be fine I think. If she needs more you can buy them gradually

Shouldbedoing · 26/02/2023 10:29

5 or 6 is quite a juggle because they don't dry quickly, as per their design to hold moisture. They can be tumbled, of course. DD uses 3 pairs of good quality ones a day (Blinx, Diana, cheaper than Thinx or Modibodi, especially bought in a 3 for 2 bundle)

mynewusername2023 · 26/02/2023 10:30

I don't use them for periods as I don't have them but I use them for incontinence. I wear them every day of the week and a different pair at night. They offer me incredible security and are super comfy.

Yes they are pricey but I bought them when the sales are on and built up enough to last 3 weeks (day and night).

They will last a long time (some of mine are over 3 years old and still work perfectly) and the benefit to your DD is unmeasurable.

DD also wears them in between on school days as she anxious about her period. She doesn't have regular ones yet though.

By chance I was looking at these this morning and have a discount code, if you'd like it.

I have sensory issues and very happily wear these!

SBAM · 26/02/2023 10:34

There’s a podcast called 28ish days later which is a 15 min episode per day of the average cycle, charting what’s happening to your body and common feelings/issues around the stages of the cycle. You might want to listen first to see if it’s suitable, but this may help your daughter with understanding what’s going on not just with the physical effects.

I wear period pants for the days before my period, mine can be unpredictable and start heavily so I feel more secure that way. If they’d been common when I was a teen I’d have been so much more comfortable in school.
I hope this helps your daughter feel at ease in her body.

They have a bundle too which seems reasonable!

kindercup · 26/02/2023 10:35

M&S ones are good and 3 pairs for £20

I wear them daily.

I was just going to recommend these! They always have sales on too

@Springpetal What an odd comment to make based on the tiny amount of information I’ve provided.

The comment about DH thinking I’m mad was tongue in cheek. I have said further upthread that he would of course spend if it makes DD happy.

OP posts:
IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/02/2023 10:38

I think the OP's DH may have misunderstood the expense:

DD(11) like ls ModiBodi boyshorts. To get through a period without washing every single day she needs 8 or 9 pairs (3 pairs every 24 hrs, with a couple of washes). If, like the OP's dd she wanted to wear them every day, that's still 7 pairs a week - assuming you don't wash everyday and they take 2 days to dry (bearing in mind you should not tumble dry ModiBodi) when it's not warm enough for line drying but not cold enough for central heating, or heating isn't on.

Even if the OP's dd didn't wear period pants every day, if she wants sanitary protection every day, that still comes at a cost.

Periods are rubbish when you are a young teen (dd was only 10 when she started). Puberty is unpredictable and can be disconcerting. If period pants make that easier to manage, then so be it.

I'm with the PP who said that the OP's dh can dictate how his DD manages her periods when he has them.

They've been brilliant for me. I was decorating yesterday and climbing all over. Not a single leak, and my period is fairly heavy. I get the maxi cotton ones but they do lighter ones too.

What is wrong with you?

BrightSparkInTheDark · 26/02/2023 10:41

I need to clarify. DH’s comments about madness and cost were tongue in cheek. He is balking at the cost of over £200 for a set of underwear, whilst also happily leaving HIS bank card on the table before work saying “just get what she needs!”.

OP posts:
Cocobutt · 26/02/2023 10:42

Why are u discussing it with dh ,he’s a bit over invested in her underwear by the sound of it

WTF.

Well OP has started a thread about it, so you must think she’s way more over invested than her DH.

I guess it’s a woman’s job to sort everything out.

BertieBotts · 26/02/2023 10:43

I think it's fine. I tend to wear pantyliners most days because I get a larger amount of cervical discharge than average (according to MN anyway).

Optionally · 26/02/2023 10:43

OP My dd has similar worries, and her solution (which surprised me, but it turns out she’d learnt about them at a school) was to ask for a menstrual cup. It can be worn ‘just in case’ and it avoids the sensory issues with pads or period pants. It’s a very personal thing, but maybe something to consider for the future?

Praying4Memory · 26/02/2023 10:43

If she is struggling this much with periods in general would it be an option for her to start using a contraceptive that stops her periods completely?
