Sudafed, Day and Night Nurse set to be withdrawn

Apparently, an urgent review is being done after it's been found that the decongestant pseudoephedrine can cause a rare brain disorder.

Night Nurse doesn't contain pseudoephidrine so I don't know why this would be withdrawn.

Could be withdrawn, not about to be withdrawn. Your title is wrong.

Due to a rare side effect of the pseudoephidrine that has occurred when the drug also narrows some blood vessels to the brain resulting in two extremely rare conditions. But they are doing a review to see whether they should consider making these prescription drugs.

Sounds sensible to me to review if they have a concern.

BusterGonad · 24/02/2023 08:51

I read about this yesterday. I'm not sure if there's any connection but the last time I took a decongestant it made me feel really weird, like I was having palpitations. It wasn't until recently that I've realised you shouldn't take them with blood pressure medication, which I am on.

PlatinumBrunette · 24/02/2023 08:52

Day Nurse has pseudoephedrine in it. And I believe only 2 people have suffered the disorder, but I’ve not yet read up everything about it 🤷‍♀️

No. No no no no.
its the only stuff that gets me through a cold.

Choconut · 24/02/2023 08:56

Night nurse is fantastic for flu or covid as it helps you sleep IME. I'd hate for them to withdraw that. I've never taken the day one though.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/02/2023 08:57

I'm worried that Nurofen Cold & Flu is also on the list, it's the only thing that makes me feel human if I've got a bad cold! If it does go to prescription only there'll be no point in bothering as it takes too long to get through to my bloody GP!

It was bad enough that they stopped Motilium being available OTC, now they want my Nurofen!

KittyTitty · 24/02/2023 08:57

All the good stuff gets removed in the end.

megletthesecond · 24/02/2023 08:57

Same veg. NN is amazing for a rotten cold.
I can't take day medicine as I'm sensitive to caffiend and get palpitations.

Night Nurse doesn't contain it though Confused

I can't take pseudoephidrine either due to palpitations.

Night Nurse though 😭 I've taken this just to get some relief and sleep when I had covid and also toothache.

I nearly cried when I saw this. Sudafed in the green packets are the only thing that works for me when I'm ill

ApolloandDaphne · 24/02/2023 09:03

I asked my DH to get me night nurse from our local chemist last time I had a cold. They told him they don't stock it anymore. I wondered if it was a medicine that was often abused due to its soporific effects. Maybe it has been withdrawn for sale already?

stbrandonsboat · 24/02/2023 09:11

I've ordered some bottles of NN online.

I think it's the dextromethorphan they want off the shelves. It's sedative and helps you sleep when you're unwell.

I buy motillium (domperidone) online in case that's helpful.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/02/2023 09:35

Thank you @belimoo. I never took it a lot but I feel sick if I eat the wrong things after having my gallbladder out years ago.

redundantsoon · 24/02/2023 09:48

Night Nurse has never worked for me - if anything it makes more agitated not sedated.

MeinKraft · 24/02/2023 09:49

No point making Sudafed a prescription drug, GPs hate Sudafed, you'll never get a prescription for it!

Dahlia444 · 24/02/2023 09:50

Pseudoephedrine is about the only thing that wards off me needing antibiotics from sinusitis. I'm horrified about this.

belimoo · 24/02/2023 09:54

@PinkSparklyPussyCat Yes, I just take it occasionally for nausea too. I was very happy to find it online!

greenacrylicpaint · 24/02/2023 10:07

thing is, for relieving a blocked nose there are other medicines available that are safer and very effective. i.e. decongestant nose spray.

MirabelMax · 24/02/2023 10:12

I'm also hoping they don't take the night nurse. I don't really use any other cold medicines much but getting a good night's sleep when I'm ill helps me power through the day.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 24/02/2023 10:14

The Night Nurse bit is wrong and has been reported incorrectly by the media. It doesn't contain pseudophedrine.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 24/02/2023 10:18

Pseudoephedrine has a really horrid effect on me. Gives me insomnia and almost a manic energy where I can keep going on and on and feel no need for food and rest. I can easily see how it’s one of the components needed for crystal meth.

I always warn people who I sell it to that it can have very serious side effects.

I think it’s only right to look into the sale of it and make sure it’s a good idea for people to buy it OTC.
