Working hours

Would you work the hours of 8am - 5:30pm?

This involves a 20-30 minute commute via car daily.

The annual leave package is 20 days plus BH but 3 days of your annual leave are to be used between the Christmas period.

I just find these hours so unsocial, especially if you have a child.

I would but only for 4 days a week as otherwise that’s a high amount of hours if you did it for 5 days. I’ve never had less than 25 days leave though

Whiskyski · 23/02/2023 15:44

Aren’t these pretty standard working hours?

commute is good tbh.

Depending on job, role, experience and type of company the contract might be negotiated?

orangemimosa · 23/02/2023 15:44

@Whiskyski no, I've never worked a job that starts at 8am and finishes at 5:30pm.

My recent working hours include 8:45am - 4:30pm and 8:30am until 5pm.

Depends on salary.

addictedtotheflats · 23/02/2023 15:45

Absolutely not. I could never work 5 days a week. I do shift work and dont get me wrong 13 hour shifts back to back are a killer but with 3-4 days off a week and 7 weeks A/L i would find it difficult to work so many days a week.

orangemimosa · 23/02/2023 15:45

Salary range is £25k - £35k. Very big scale but even so, I don't think it's enough for the hours and lack of AL.

OP posts:
Tdcp · 23/02/2023 15:46

I leave at 7:45 and get back about 6pm, my working hours are 8;30 - 5pm. My pay is 21.5k. It is hard with DD, I wish I had more time with her.

Jules912 · 23/02/2023 15:49

Not unless it's some sort of compressed hours. Also that won't fit with most paid childcare which is 8-6 unless you have someone who can drop off.

orangemimosa · 23/02/2023 15:50

@Jules912 my issue exactly. I asked about flexibility on the hours due to childcare and was told no and that'll likely be an issue in offering me the job.

Their response was a colleague drives from the next village along and makes it into work fine?

OP posts:
interedin · 23/02/2023 16:01

That's 9.5 hours day, over 5 days (I assume it's Mon-Fri) that's 42.5 hours if you consider a 1-hr lunch break each day. That's a bit extreme IMO, especially for the pay.

Also,

Their response was a colleague drives from the next village along and makes it into work fine?

Be wary of responses like this. They are unlikely to give a shit about you and will always compare you to said colleague.

orangemimosa · 23/02/2023 16:03

@interedin yes it's Mon - Fri, I am glad I'm not the only one who thought it was extremely long hours!

The fact they can't be flexible with the hours due to not wanting to upset someone else in the team is an issue for me.

Dinoswearunderpants · 23/02/2023 16:09

How many days a week?

I think they're very long hours however I'm a standard 9-5.

orangemimosa · 23/02/2023 16:09

@Dinoswearunderpants 5

OP posts:
Dinoswearunderpants · 23/02/2023 16:12

No I couldn't do that. Such long hours. The salary is so low too. But I guess that depends on the sector sorry.

orangemimosa · 23/02/2023 16:12

@Dinoswearunderpants construction/hire sector, office based

topcat2014 · 23/02/2023 16:14

The low holiday reveals this will be a shit employer.

40 hr basic week is tight.

Dinoswearunderpants · 23/02/2023 16:16

That seems so low for that sector. I don't think they sound like a good employer. Aim higher lovely.

Yes, I've worked that for the past 11 years, 5 days a week with 2 hours daily commute on top.

Scottishgirl85 · 23/02/2023 16:19

The hours are not that unusual but the pay is low. My hours are 37 per week but I do over 50. I am a high earner though so it comes with the territory. I don't think it's the job for you.

Beezknees · 23/02/2023 16:20

No. I am contracted to do 38 hours, I usually do 8 hours Mon-Thurs with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break, then a solid 6 hours on a Friday with no break so I can finish around 3.

orangemimosa · 23/02/2023 16:21

Thanks for all the feedback.

The holiday is an issue for me and the non flexible hours are too, I'm glad to see it's not just me!

To those who do or have worked those hours, hats off to you. I hope you get paid ££!

I do a mix but pretty standard I do 8.15/5.45 once a week, twice if I have to do a Sunday (which is only 6.5 hours)

People without a child might find these hours long too. They have a life too.

FWIW I do these hours for similar pay but I get 25 days hol + bank hols. I don't commute very often and mainly work from home. I find the hours fine.

isthisit83 · 23/02/2023 17:12

My husband has an officer based role in the construction industry and those are his hours. He often works a lot more but he also earns more than that.

StJulian2023 · 23/02/2023 17:15

Hours too long but the low holiday would be the real dealbreaker for me
