I’m looking into visiting York and wondered what other places people would recommend? Canterbury is also on my list. I enjoy history so would like somewhere with historic buildings, museums, castles etc.

I’m from London, have also visited Brighton, Bristol, Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge and some smaller towns.

Chester and Glasgow are both good to visit.

Are you only thinking about the UK? Stockholm is good for a weekend away.

They are really good

Notsurewhattodo29 · 22/02/2023 12:58

Bath is nice or York?

midsomermurderess · 22/02/2023 12:58

If Scotland was a contender, St Andrews and down the coast visiting the little old fishing villages, Craig, Anstruther, St Monans, Elie. Probably a bit to far and not the easiest to get to.

Notsurewhattodo29 · 22/02/2023 12:58

Oops realised you mentioned york

Shitfather · 22/02/2023 12:59

Rye is gorgeous. Stay in a Tudor house/B&B in/around Mermaid Street. If the weather is good, you can go to Camber Sands nearby.

Holkham in N Norfolk is gorgeous.

Coxspurplepippin · 22/02/2023 13:14

Wells, Norwich, Harrogate, Ripon, Stamford, Canterbury, Winchester, Salisbury.

Willowtre1 · 22/02/2023 13:15

Ludlow in Herefordshire, it's a little foodie capital.
Lavenham in Suffolk, pretty with antiques and nice pubs, nice if you want a quiet/country trip.
I would second Rye and Bamburgh

Willowtre1 · 22/02/2023 13:15

And Stamford and Harrogate

maddy68 · 22/02/2023 13:16

Plenty to keep you occupied in Leeds. E.g. Royal armouries & Leeds Dock- take the water taxi up to granary wharf, walk to Leeds art gallery/ city museum, walk through the victoria quater & swing by kirkgate market. Bit out of city centre but still close check out Armley Mills industrial museum or Kirkstall Abbey, or have a walk in Roundhay Park. Further still there's Harewood House, Temple Newsome or Lotherton Hall.

Cheerfulcharlie · 22/02/2023 13:25

Stratford on Avon

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/02/2023 13:29

If you're going to North of England, there's this museum;

I've not been myself, never saw the point actually.

Almost any reasonably sized town in the UK ,Wales,Scotland will have enough history and places of interest to keep anyone interested for a weekend.

Yay! For our island’s amazing past and all the invaders, incomers,Rich buggers, peasants, industrialists and creative minds who have contributed.

My offering is Dungeness. Sea,smuggling, churches, sheep, nature, writers.

Riverlee · 22/02/2023 13:34

York is lovely. I recommend this place to stay.
Piglets

Whistable - not big but lovely little town, coastal walks etc
Rye - as above for Whistable
(If you are driving, you could go via Leeds castle near Maidstone.)

HippyChickMama · 22/02/2023 13:40

Some lovely places in the Peak District, Bakewell, Castleton, Ilam, Dovedale, Ashbourne and Eyam are all interesting with lots of scenery, castles and museums and lots of EH and NT properties if you have membership to one or both
