Oh how my great-grandmother would have laughed!

I’ve said it already but Tesco make a loss on eggs. They want to be cheapest hence not stocking the range of brands they once did mostly ones that put up prices.
We still don’t pay what things cost to produce.

OK you lot, we were the thread that mentioned turnips first.

Turnip tops are selling for £11 per kilo

AdventFridgeOfShame · 24/02/2023 22:18

Nobody wanted apples next year, did they?

pigsinoodies · 24/02/2023 22:32

An apple a day (and a shortage of doctors, NHS waiting lists, and junior doctors going on strike) keeps the doctor away.

Rickets, beriberi, this is the government that thought starving Ireland was a feasible solution. Create a situation of mass emigration and you solve the immigration issue.

Actually I have no idea what this country is coming to, which is fine, I'm not in the cabinet. Alas, they seem to have no more of a clue.

verdantverdure · 24/02/2023 22:42

Patrick Minford the Brexit economist did say that British Farming would be gone after Brexit.

Singapore doesn't really have farmers and neither will Singapore On Thames or whatever the brexiteers called it

beguilingeyes · 25/02/2023 06:57

We had three apple trees for Christmas. I'm beginning to think this was a wise move.

Clavinova · 25/02/2023 12:14

Ireland appear to be running short of tomatoes - perhaps they could apply to join the EU next year?

25 February 2023
Cold weather in Spain and Morocco has caused problems with the supply of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers across Europe.
An Irish Independent survey of leading supermarkets this week revealed that a number are currently low on stock or without these items.

www.independent.ie/irish-news/tomato-shortage-could-last-until-may-due-to-high-energy-costs-irish-shoppers-warned-42358919.html

Rationing move introduced as tomato shortage impacts Irish supermarkets.
Customers in some stores are limited to just two packs of peppers or tomatoes per person due to a shortage caused by poor weather in Spain.

We tried to grow our own during covid and all that happened was the bugs, slugs and snails feasted so it was an expensively futile business, but I plan to grow salad on indoor windowsills. I'd love a couple of apple trees. And maybe some blackberry bushes Smile

bellinisurge · 25/02/2023 13:28

Prepper here. Yes, I prefer seasonal veg and I grow and preserve my own stuff a bit. But, OP, your great grandmother didn't have the right to vote or have her own bank account. We need to do this better. We need to accept more seasonal veg. But it is not unreasonable for people to expect a decent and affordable supply of tasty food year round. Including tomatoes.

verdantverdure · 25/02/2023 13:29

Someone on Twitter unearthed the Daily Mail article on the governments own predictions for a No Deal Brexit.

The current Brexit seems to have achieved similar

We've already had our default right to vote taken away. Now we don't know if we can vote until we try, and see if our ID is accepted as being a good likeness or not.

We've always had salad in wintertime during my lifetime.

Why should our country have to go back to the time of people's great grandmothers?!

How much more of a normal British way of life are we going to sacrifice on the altar of Brexit?

Liorae · 25/02/2023 13:56

Most European countries require voter ID.

We had a shortage of some vegetables in 2017:

I think it's vital to protect our British way of life.

If Ukraine can have plenty of tomatoes in the frontline with daily shelling then there's no reason we can't.

We've just bought a gooseberry bush. I love goosberrys and I never see them anywhere.

verdantverdure · 25/02/2023 15:52

We don't eat gooseberries very often ourselves. I'll add them to our list.

My parents says the garden centre was busy this morning with people buying "future food" basically.

Yellowdays · 25/02/2023 16:00

I have a small (dwarf) pear tree. It is incredibly prolific and was only planted 3 years ago.

Clavinova · 25/02/2023 16:14

If Ukraine can have plenty of tomatoes

Presumably imported from Turkey out of season?

east-fruit.com/en/news/tomato-prices-rise-in-ukraine-due-to-lack-of-imports-from-turkey/

Although the Kherson region (Kherson supermarket in the photo) is "famous for its cultivation of fruits and vegetables."
"Kherson boasts some 2 million hectares of agricultural land — the most in all of Ukraine, and nearly twice as much as in the Netherlands. It should come as no surprise that the first Ukrainian ketchup manufacturer, Chumak, was founded there in 1993..."

Turnips are not an option to save us from post Brexit scurvy it appears.

The Turnip King of the U.K. says he stopped growing turnips last year because of Brexit.

(He can't get the workers to pick them)
