Why is it so hard to get fruit and salad?

Is it my area or a widespread thing?

I'm trying to order a small same-day delivery so I have lunches and breakfasts for today and tomorrow until I can do a big shop.

Morrisons have suspended deliveries on Uber due to low stock. Tesco is sold out of all varieties of tomatoes, pineapples and grapes and also don't have the yogurts I like. Asda has sold out of lettuce, cucumber, and grapes. Iceland have sold out of lettuce and cucumbers.

It was the same last time I tried to order food online. What's going on?

Quite. I agree.

And yet @Sadlifter you were referring to buying from Amazon yesterday on a thread I was on also!!

Sadlifter · 22/02/2023 11:55

Huh? I do use Amazon, yes. But not for food 🙄 my local farmers don't tend to grow mascara and freezer tubs, so I think I'm OK.

While there was no missing fruit and veg in my last delivery I did see a couple supermarkets are restricting amounts due to supply problems from Spain and another country. Not sure if it's logistics or crops.

Or people getting themselves whipped In to a frenzy and over buying

Clavinova · 22/02/2023 11:23

As I said on another thread, it’s purely a UK issue

Supply issues in the Netherlands here - 15 Feb 2023;

www.freshplaza.com/europe/article/9503487/no-end-to-cauliflower-shortage-in-sight-yet/

I wish it were just a cauliflower I couldn't get.

There was an organic one at over £2. I have been to three supermarkets in less than 24 hours.
No salad stuff at all, no courgettes, no cabbage, no celery, no brocoli, you name it, I couldn't get it. Basically if you are happy with a turnip, carrots or potato you're fine.
Anything else you're buggered

It is quite obviously Brexit. Why - if there are shortages - would the EU want to sell to us... (we are notorious at paying cheap)... when they can sell to their neighbours? No channel crossing, no problem, they will choose to sell to their neighbours

I have just been over in spain and shopping at supermarkets... they were awash with wonderful fresh fruit and veg. No shortages whatsoever.

Yes but without those warehouses… you wouldn’t be able to buy what you do buy from Amazon!

Where are you?

I am SE and no problem at all.

loveisanopensore · 22/02/2023 12:04

I'm in Ireland. Lidl has been hit and miss with their stock for the past few weeks, particularly tomatoes.

The other side of the country.

Sainsburys was awful, here is a pic of the empty shelves at a massive Sainsbos in a big town.

Co-op had not one item of salad veg at all.

The Dutch supermarket sign in my link lists a shortage of bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli and iceberg lettuce if I have translated correctly.

Roussette · 22/02/2023 12:13

Strange that there are no problems within mainland EU then isn't it?

I don't speak Dutch so can't verify what you're saying

What I can’t understand then is why the insistence this is Brexit (vehement anti Brexiteer here btw!)

Would this not the the case that in your area lots of people getting whipped up and hoarding whereas in my area people haven’t 🤷‍♀️

I can't imagine people are hoarding salad and veg! It's not like it doesn't go off...
Toilet rolls maybe...

UK importers have had to rely on Morocco due to Brexit, but Morocco are part of the European Economic Area so obviously will serve the EU first before us.

This sets it out.

Welfast · 22/02/2023 12:31

Just back from Lidl and fully stocked. SE

Roussette · 22/02/2023 12:37

I obviously live in the wrong part of the country Grin

Many many in fact

It would seem so. Not even a whiff of a shortage around SE (nor my siblings in London)

ropeycorn · 22/02/2023 13:06

Brexit - but our local Morrison's had plenty of gammon !

gogohmm · 22/02/2023 13:12

Bad weather in southern Spain and North Africa.

Surprising. I just got back from Southern Spain yesterday. Last two days wall to wall sunshine, prior to that mild and cloudy. And friends of ours have been out since before Christmas and had sunbathing weather whilst the sun was out (we were in regular contact)

Morocco has had snow yes.

What you people don't seem to understand is that when there is supply issues, the SM prioritises the SM and we ain't in it.

This article from 2017 suggests they prioritise the highest bidder;

3 Feb 2017
VEGETABLES are being rationed in supermarkets across the UK after storms and snow in Spain decimated crops, causing a supply shortage.

And there are fears the severe shortage could lead to a European trade war - with industry experts warning the UK could end up with nothing if France and Germany are prepared to pay more for their veg.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/2773682/vegetable-rationing-lettuce-broccoli-courgettes-supermarkets-uk/

Yes bidding with IN the SM - not with countries outside.

Its amazing that seemingly intelligent people can't grasp the basic concept of what a SM is.

But no shortages where i am in S/W france, amazing that.

The supermarket shelves were still 'empty' in February 2017, so what was the point of being in the single market?

audemoray · 22/02/2023 13:33

There's also still a shortage of other goods in the supermarket, so more likely to be Brexit connected

Supermarket aisles across Europe face shortages of fruit and vegetables in the coming weeks following a series of adverse climatic events in the southern Spain region of Almeria, whose greenhouses supply a big proportion of the fresh produce consumed during the winter months.

High temperatures in the autumn and early winter, followed by a persistent cold spell, have caused a shortage across most product ranges.
And the same scenario is being played out in other production areas across Europe, prompting fears of major supply issues across the continent.

This was one of the main topics of conversation between companies from Almeria and their customers during the last edition of the Fruit Logistica fair in the German capital.
