Why is it so hard to get fruit and salad?

Is it my area or a widespread thing?

I'm trying to order a small same-day delivery so I have lunches and breakfasts for today and tomorrow until I can do a big shop.

Morrisons have suspended deliveries on Uber due to low stock. Tesco is sold out of all varieties of tomatoes, pineapples and grapes and also don't have the yogurts I like. Asda has sold out of lettuce, cucumber, and grapes. Iceland have sold out of lettuce and cucumbers.

It was the same last time I tried to order food online. What's going on?

Talk Canada, US & Japan all you like. I am talking EU.

Perhaps you are getting confused - you quite clearly posted 'in other G7 nations'

Not confused. I quoted someone's tweet, it ain't mine!

Doubt you looked at the link though.

You certainly didn't - the tweet is dated September 2021.

Brexit caused the recent cold weather in Spain, obvs.

that same cold snap that didn't affect any other European supplies of food, strange that France & German don't have food rationing or shortages

They are experiencing shortages in Ireland, Poland and The Netherlands too.

I think olive oil will be noticeably lacking. Growers are short two months worth. Pretty sure the U.K. doesn’t use as much as Spain and Italy.

As previous posters have said the price of fruit and vegetables are more expensive outside of the U.K.

You'd already know- olive harvest is Oct/Nov. Last year there was 10% less production than 2021 but way superior quality. (at least here in Italy) Too soon to predict what this year will be like.

So?

Don't really care, you post so many old links I can't read them all.

Anyway, my picture taken yesterday of empty shelves in a major city big Sainsburys is being used by BBC now, (with my permission!) perhaps they'll mention the 'B' word instead of bad weather for a change

Bloody hell, Clavs selective links. 👺 She has pasted a link from Spain from last year when there was a panic rush on sunflower oil in Spain (where fried food is very important!) from when Ukraine was invaded initially to argue that the situation in Britain now is the same as in Spain.

That is the equivalent of saying that the UK has no toilet roll at all, because there is an article in existence somewhere from the beginning of the pandemic about it.

FWIW, it is bullshit, there is no rationing in Spain. The supermarkets didnt even haven to ration sunflower oil on that ONE day mentioned from a year ago, they were just given the permission to.

Must do better, Clav.

She reminds me of Comical Ali Saddham Hussein's information minister who always proclaimed the war was being won whilst meanwhile back in the real world a total rout.

Have a good Thursday, (I've just received a refund in my bank account I've been waiting weeks for so happy budgie here!)

ifonly4 · 23/02/2023 07:42

Sorry if repeating someone else, but they literally said on tv last night that our eu friends are willing to pay more for their fruit and veg, so are literally outbidding us, meaning they're getting priority in terms of supplies.

Yes. Our supermarkets are masters at screwing suppliers with contracts. They've been caught with their pants down. There is produce at independent wholesalers but they won't pay market price.

Sparklingbrook · 21/02/2023 05:49

Bad weather in Spain is to blame for a lot of the salad shortages.

But....if that was true, why are other countries saying they're not affected? If it was bad weather and unable to grow them etc, surely that'd affect everywhere, not just the UK?

ItWillWash · 23/02/2023 09:12

A mystery punnet of cherry tomatoes has appeared in my fridge this morning so somewhere local has them in stock. I don't know where they came from or who put them there. They were not there when I went to bed last night but if no one claims them by lunchtime I'm eating them.
