If you don't exercise...

Please post here! I've just seen another thread asking how much people exercise per week and everyone's replies are about 8 hours, with 9 mile runs, daily weight sessions etc. I thought I was doing quite well doing 2 runs a week and now feel quite disheartened!

I do absolutely no exercise. My legs, feet, knees & back are knackered. I barely leave the house.

kagerou · 18/02/2023 22:17

Feel bad to admit it but I do precisely 0 hours a week exercise

I do walk a lot though and I've never gained weight so I just don't ever really think of it

Scr3wed · 18/02/2023 22:19

I walk a lot, but that’s all I can realistically do, I’m disabled.

I am domestic in care home, so every 8h shift I treat as a workout. (3times a week).
No other exercises, sometimes walks,

Awrite · 18/02/2023 22:20

Does burning nervous energy count?

No? Well, I go for a walk both Saturday and Sunday. More often during the spring/summer as it's nice in the evenings.

That's it.

Don't feel disheartened, I feel threads like that are just stealth boost central. I'm barely active at the moment due to some health issues but I'd be happy to manage 2 runs a week on a good week. If you want to up your exercise/ length of runs/ whatever do it for you not because anonymous people on Mumsnet are talking about their own (exaggerated in most cases) normal.

I disagree completely. It wasn’t a boast thread. It’s really really important to exercise especially as you get older. Accidental falls are a huge cause of death in the elderly. Having good balance and strong bones and muscles makes a massive difference.
you don’t have to be gum bunny/ addict. It’s not all or nothing. Weight bearing exercise is particularly important for the bone health of women. God knows why anyone would get angry about this.
no one is making anyone exercise but you should be aware of the probable consequences of doing nothing.

Rebellious23 · 18/02/2023 22:25

I posted on the other thread
Virtually no walking, I WFH and am tied to my desk
I do have a peloton so I make use of that most evenings to do 20-45 min spin classes. Try and add on a 10 min stretch or 10 min weights but I'm by no means fit
I aim for 6 night a week which usually means I achieve 3, or 4 on a good week

Hbh17 · 18/02/2023 22:26

I never exercise, because even the thought of it bores me silly. I read books instead. So I haveva good vocabulary and am well-informed but will probably drop dead before I'm 60 😂

Tiddler39 · 18/02/2023 22:29

I think there’s a myth that you have to run or go to the gym etc to ‘do’ exercise.

It doesn’t have to be that punishing (and if you’re over 40, read up about whether running is actually the right exercise…)

I try to do a quick 15-min Pilates workout at home most evenings while watching TV. I’m in my 40s and I’m slim, fit and toned. I’m even getting abs!

You don’t need to be doing loads to make it count, just little and often.

Stellaris22 · 18/02/2023 22:30

I do 3 sessions a week (two strength training, one circuits class) and that's plenty.

Doing several hours a day seems unhealthy and bordering on addiction.

Surely an exercise addiction is one of the better addictions. I would be more concerned about people sitting on the sofa for hours drinking wine than people who hit the gym on a daily basis.

LikeEmeraldeyes · 18/02/2023 22:35

I do none. But to be honest I do feel physically very unhealthy. I don't have enough of a balance in my life but don't know how to sort it to exercise more

Kalasbyxor · 18/02/2023 22:35

Errr... nope. But I rarely sit down, am usually on my feet doing something, whether at work (teacher) or at home with DC.
I would love to have time to exercise though; I love my bike, walking, swimming, the gym, just can't find the time. It's the job's fault.

mrsdaresee · 18/02/2023 22:36

School run is my only exercise. No school = No exercise.

Some of them add up to like 15 hours a week, with a job and children, how?

any hobby that takes up that much time means that most doing that don't have a partner who gets the same amount of time & doesn't have much free time for anything else.

I walk but that's it. I did used to do a bit of cycling then my bike fell to bits and didn't get another. Never really enjoyed it tho I suppose if somebody gave me a bike I might do a bit of cycling.
Before the pandemic I did do 2 sessions of Pilates a week because they were in the building where I worked but wfh now and no pilates any more anyway.
I detest running even more than cycling, not a great swimmer, only really like climbing and that's expensive.
So no, I don't really exercise.

@BigButtons I’m sure we’re all capable of ‘reading the science’ if we want to. Read the room ffs.

It’s always about choices and investment in future health. Everyone can do something.

cloudcett · 18/02/2023 22:51

Interesting thread. I hate pretty much all exercise, always have, but especially in the winter. In the spring/ summer, I like walking, maybe swimming. I've tried the gym, but I never stick to it. I know I should exercise, I just can't make myself enjoy it enough. And with a full time job and two kids, I don't have loads of time. So I can't see anything changing in the near future.
