How many hours of exercise do you do each week?

I'm starting to think I need to get myself into shape, but I can't work out if it will be enough. How much do you do per week?

Here's my plan :

Monday - 1 hour Pilates 1 hour swim
Tuesday - 1 hour gym (cycling, cross trainer, rowing)
Wednesday - 1 hour swim
Thursday - 1 hour gym (as above) or swim
Friday - 1 hour pilates

Is that enough to get me feeling physically fit? It's only 6 hours, which doesn't seem like a lot.

I do around 6 hours of strenuous exercise.
Typical plan:

Monday: Strength class 45mins before work
Run at lunch 30 mins
Sometimes another half hour Caroline Girvan session in the eve

Tuesday: Half hour Caroline Girvan weights (I cthis as a rest day kind of)

Wednesday: 30 mins run at lunch
One hour hill walking on the treadmill in the evening

Thursday: Half hour CG weights

Friday: 10k run (one hour) and MAYBE half hour weights or Pilates

Weekends I am very active but often won't do structured exercise, unless I do Parkrun. I often hill climb or hike on a Sunday, maybe a bike ride with the family

florenceandthemac · 17/02/2023 22:30

Oh and yes I'm fairly fit now. With weight training, you can track yourself getting stronger for example

VirtualRealitee · 17/02/2023 22:33

No organised exercise as I hate it.

But I don't drive so I walk everywhere and have a very active job. I'm mid-fifties and quite fit.

Scarydinosaurs · 17/02/2023 22:36

What do you do at the moment? And include any activity where you’re out of breath.

A good approach is to look at what you currently do and introduce one new habit. Could be walking an extra ten minutes a day, or beginning couch to 5k, or Pilates for ten minutes a day.

start small, let the habit establish, and then increase.

You’re more likely to stick to any changes if you do.

I ‘exercise’ for about two hours a day including weights, running, Pilates and walking. But I started at 25 minutes and slowly increased. Have done my current levels for almost two years and it’s just my normal now.

Rebellious23 · 17/02/2023 22:37

Depends how tired I am (health issues)
I try and aim for 6 days exercise which usually translates to doing 4
Don't aim for hours as I do spin classes so high intensity!
Usually a 30-45 min spin, 5-10 min cool down then a 10 min stretch class. Sometimes add 10 mins upper body weights

Reinventinganna · 17/02/2023 22:39

I do a mix of weights, Pilates, yoga, walking, hiit and dance. Probably around 8-9 hours a week.
I’m becoming healthier although wouldn’t say I’m there yet.

Superstar22 · 17/02/2023 22:39

I’m so surprised people have so much time to dedicate to exercise. I’m by no way technically “fit”but I am trying to be and thought I was doing a decent amount for an “average person”.

i do 3 cardio classes a week of 60 mins each and probably 1x 6 mile walk at the weekend. Sometimes cycle. Sometimes swim.
if I worked part time or didn’t have kids with multiple evening activities id probably like to do more.

BeethovenNinth · 17/02/2023 22:41

What does the rest of the day look like eg do you walk the kids to school or perhaps the dog, do you garden or clean or do you sit for 8 hours at a desk? This is the important bit. Far better to remain generally active in the day

i do mini 7 minute workouts after I have been sitting down for two hours, I walk the dogs, I walk briskly, I might get off the bus a few stops early if I’m going to the office and will sit down all day

my actual structured exercise is therefore less. Rarely more than a half hours weights or run or swim. I might do a longer walk at the weekend

I’m pretty fit and since incorporating more rest time I’m healthier and leaner!

gwenneh · 17/02/2023 22:42

At minimum I get 3-4 hours, of equestrian sport. If I have more than just 2 days to get out to the yard I get more, but I always have at least those 2 days.

Dacadactyl · 17/02/2023 22:42

I think your plan sounds good and combined with a decent diet you will notice a difference. But the end of this week I will have done approx 8 hours of exercise. Sometimes I do more, sometimes less depending on what else ive got going on.

TheOrigRights · 17/02/2023 22:43

4 or 5hrs of hard exercise.
Running, circuits, cycling, swimming (varies a lot apart from the running, I always do that).
I have full time desk job, am a lone parent (though he's getting older now so I can get out more).

Reinventinganna · 17/02/2023 22:43

@Scarydinosaurs I love your post.

@Superstar22 my dc are older so look after themselves and I fit in classes/gym before or after work (full time 13 hour shifts). I make it a priority because it helps me physically and mentally.

Pureradio · 17/02/2023 22:45

2 x gym classes per week, strength.
4 x runs including one that is over 10 miles and quite arduous in hilly territory
Mid 50's

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/02/2023 23:05

Blimey there's some very fit people on here!

I walk a fair bit, at least 1.5 hours a day (I have a dog.)

I do Pilates once a week.

That's it 🤷‍♀️

iknowwheretheothersockgoes · 17/02/2023 23:05

This is all so incredibly helpful, thank you.

I'm relatively active, but I don't have a routine and I'm not consistent. I used to be, but I've let it slip in the past year and now it's a bit hit and miss.

Between 6-8 hours

iknowwheretheothersockgoes · 17/02/2023 23:09

Sorry I should say I'm a lone parent so am quite restricted on the amount of hours, but that's the bit that worrying me. Is this enough to notice a difference?

You'll get all the fit people gravitating to a thread like this, I thought I was quite fit until I saw what others are doing! Mind you, it's motivated me to up my game 💪

Mushroo · 17/02/2023 23:19

Im not sure this thread is representative but im
in awe of everyone who has answered!

I wfh and have loads of time but I’ve fallen into a rut where because im out of the habit, I’ve become really lazy, it was weirdly easier to get it done when I was busier.

Anyway, at the moment I’ve signed up to do couch to 5k with a local running club so I run 3 times a week. I’d really recommend this - I’ve tried it before on my own and never managed it, the club is really motivating.

Other than that I aim to do yoga once a week
and gym twice a week but it rarely happens.

Probably only do about 7k steps a day on non-running days.

Im aware I need to do more but as mentioned up the thread, I think one habit at a time is the way to go.

LakeFlyPie · 17/02/2023 23:24

This is WHO recommendation for exercise frequency and intensity for adults.
I currently do 3-4 BodyPump classes / week, 1 x Yoga and daily dog walks (30-60mins depending on other commitments). Am trying to fit in another couple of gym sessions to up cardio and strengthening work.

Vetoncall · 17/02/2023 23:33

Minimum 7 hours of CrossFit classes a week.
Minimum 6 hours of 'Open Gym' weightlifting/skill training at the CrossFit box.
2 hours+ dog walking on my 3 non-working days.
At least 1 hour dog walk most other days.
Try to do a couple of beach/trail runs each week from spring- autumn, usually take one of the dogs.

Basically if I'm not at work or walking my dogs, I'm at CrossFit. DP WFH and shares/covers the dog walking on my working days.

Are you single or/and childfree? Only asking as I'd love to do that much exercise but I'd not have time for a relationship as well I don't think

This is great! I'm very jealous. Cross fit has never appealed to me but my friends that do it swear by it.
