Help! Is there a way to buy a pram on eBay that’s collection in person only without having to go and get it?

I’ve been looking for a very specific type of buggy for a while and it has came up today but typically it’s collection in person only. It’s at the other end of the country from me 🙄 The price difference from new means I almost think it would end up being cost effective to fly down to collect it but it seems a bit extreme! I’ve looked at couriers but it involves the person having to package it up and it says they won’t post.

Is there a company that exists where they’ll go and collect it and get it to me somehow?

Thanks

Try a website called Shipley. You can get someone to pick it up for you and transport. Not cheap tho if other end of country.

Pixiedust1234 · 15/02/2023 20:46

There might be..but considering this is a known scam I highly doubt the seller would agree to a courier.

Maybe look for a different pram if they are so hard to get.

Allgoodthings1 · 15/02/2023 20:54

@Pixiedust1234 surely if I pay via eBay before any courier is collecting though it couldn’t be a scam? Or maybe I’m very naive 🙈

I have no idea, sorry. Ebay does have a forum you can join though, so you might get more replies on there from those in know. I've found it very helpful for ebay specific queries.

Allgoodthings1 · 15/02/2023 21:04

@CC4712 thank you, will have a look. I’m trying on shipley just now and waiting for some quotes back 🤞🏼

You would have to contact the seller first. It is indeed a well known scam and most sellers would say no to you.

Oopswediditagain2023 · 15/02/2023 21:26

We've used shiply a few times, and have also sold quite a few things that have been shipleyed to the buyer. They're usually v good and communicative.
The only time we had an issue was some cushion covers that were too bulky to post and someone had parcelforce come and collect and they didn't show up - took multiple attempts and me staying in all day waiting for them to show.

Hereforthedramaz · 15/02/2023 21:31

I do it all the time, I usually use anyvan and never had any problems.

I try Shiply too but in my experience they start off very very high and slowly come down to comparable prices as anyvan.

I've never had an issue with sellers thinking it's a scam as payment is sorted through eBay. But I try to check they are happy with it in advance to not piss them off and because they are likely needed to wait in for collection at some point

vdbfamily · 15/02/2023 21:34

Message the seller's and ask if you can pay for a courier. You can pay and email them the label. They do need to be available for collection though so that is sometimes the issue

MichelleScarn · 15/02/2023 21:36

What's the pram? Have you checked all gumtree and fb groups and market place?

Allgoodthings1 · 15/02/2023 21:48

@vdbfamily it’s a double and really big so I think the fact it would need somehow packaged up would mean I couldn’t just ask if I could send them the label ☹️ I’m hoping shiply or the other company could do it without being packaged if that’s how they usually collect things like pieces of furniture

OP posts:
Allgoodthings1 · 15/02/2023 21:49

@MichelleScarn it’s a double running buggy, I think the UK have basically stopped selling almost all models (something to do with fire regulations in houses here) so any that used to be readily sold new, now only seem to be available on eBay etc. There’s none on Facebook of this brand and it’s the one that seems to be best

@Hereforthedramaz I’m going to have a look on anyvan now! How does it work with something like a pram, they don’t need to package it do they? Thanks

Wouldn't it be ok if the seller received payment before dispatch?

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 15/02/2023 22:19

I've had eBay collections by anyvan before. Make sure you agree it with the seller though as neither time my buyer told me it wouldn't be themselves collecting. Just got a text through saying my driver would be with me on X date. So no choice in the matter for the seller. It seriously pissed me off as i had to wait in all day on a day not convenient to me.

The drivers seem ok though and photograph the items before they go in the van to make sure they don't get the blame for any damage. Be aware that these drivers are generally collecting large and heavy items at the same time so really you need the seller to package it to ensure safety and they may not be able/willing to do that.
I wouldn't let my items go without the eBay code in case it was a PayPal scam and had issues extracting it from the buyers so I'd offer to send the seller the code when the courier gets there if I were you.

LeafHunter · 15/02/2023 22:23

I did this with our travel system. I messaged th seller and explained, then asked if I could arrange a courier. I did evri and emailed the postage label. The seller still has the box so they put it in that. I often to pay postage but for them to set up collection or that I would set up collection if they told me when was convinient.

For another big item I contacted a friend who lived nearer and they collected it for me, then I met them midway. Worth it if you know someone but I assume you’ve thought of that already.

Soubriquet · 15/02/2023 22:26

I’ve bought around 3 different buggies off eBay that was collection only.

I asked if I paid and arranged a courier, would they be ok with that, and they have.

All they had to do was package it up. I did everything else and let them know when the courier would arrive.

Allgoodthings1 · 15/02/2023 23:11

@Soubriquet they’ve said no to packaging it up as they don’t have the original box anymore ☹️ I’ve had a quote of £300 to collect it so I think I might have to just leave it and hope one magically becomes available nearer me before I’m due but I really doubt it 🙈

OP posts:
Allgoodthings1 · 15/02/2023 23:13

@LeafHunter i would definitely be okay with this if selling something but it’s a big buggy and they don’t have the box to send it in so don’t want to package it up. I think I’m going to have to admit defeat and let it pass me by 😢

@Hereforthedramaz I’m going to have a look on anyvan now! How does it work with something like a pram, they don’t need to package it do they? Thanks

No they don't need it to be packaged so that's not a problem. They don't need to attached labels or anything like that.

I would try anyvan too and give shiply a chance to reduce. They always start at hundreds and then it's almost like a reverse auction and they come down!

Hereforthedramaz · 16/02/2023 06:37

Also with anyvan you link the quote to the eBay listing so they know exactly what the item is and sizing etc.

AloneOnTheBeach · 16/02/2023 06:50

Wouldn't it be ok if the seller received payment before dispatch?

Perhaps at one time but since eBay Now eBay almost always side with the buyer there are a number of ways a seller can be scammed. Such as saying they received a box of bricks instead of the item or saying it's broken. If eBay believes them then they can take the money back from the seller and the buyer has their money back and the item.

blippyissilly · 16/02/2023 07:03

When it arrives not as described you'll regret this

Allgoodthings1 · 16/02/2023 07:34

Thanks for everyone’s help! I will let it get towards the end of the auction but I’ve had a quote for £300 so far so may not be worth my while when you add that to it 🙈
