2 teens going to Alexander Palace alone for concert, what is safest way to travel into London after, how do you book taxis

Sorry we live miles away and they’re going on an adventure.😳Sorted it all themselves but not keen on going on tube for 40 mins back to their hotel in Kensington as worried about safety. How much would a taxi be and what is best place to book?

Yes I’ll be getting zero sleep that night.

They’ll be fine. I used to live in that area and had zero issues getting the overground to Finsbury Park and onwards.

Lcb123 · 14/02/2023 17:23

Please don’t worry. Public transport safer than taxi, easier to move around and lots of others around. Get Citymapper and make sure phone charged. They’re adults!

SgtBilko · 14/02/2023 17:31

As someone upthread said, get them to download the app CityMapper. It will give them all the options once they have put their destination in.

lazarusb · 14/02/2023 17:37

I've been to several gigs at Ally Pally and we always follow the crowd down to the station - there are plenty trains still running that late. It's a great venue and easy to get to and from (definitely recommend getting the bus up the hill on the way there though!). Hope they have a fabulous night.

SnowAndFrostOutside · 14/02/2023 17:46

I think the Londoners here are a bit harsh to the OP. A couple of 18/19 year olds in rural Devon will be taking their car and using Waze. Not city mapper. They'll be used to driving in pitch black roads with no street lights.

It's no comparison.

EyesOnThePies · 14/02/2023 17:51

The train, bus and tube will be perfectly safe.

London is busy with people out and about at night. Absolutely normal for 18 and 19 year olds to be travelling in public transport late at night.

It will be a long and v expensive cab trip.

Mad location for accommodation for an Ally Pally gig, but hey ho!

Agapornis · 14/02/2023 17:52

Stabbings after a Carly Rae Jepsen concert?.......

Get them to download CityMapper and bring a portable charger. If they want to, they can share a journey link with you so you track see them travel to their hotel.
Next time, they'll have learnt to book a hotel a lot closer.

Perhaps you should visit London yourself to see what it's like at night. Nowhere near as scary as an empty late-night countryside bus - the tube will be full of cheerful people, and in my experience people look out for each other.

Everydayitsgettingcloser · 14/02/2023 17:55

They will be fine. The main risk is being pickpocketed - make sure they know to be careful with their valuables.

NerrSnerr · 14/02/2023 17:55

I live in Gloucestershire but have spent a lot of time in London. I feel a lot safer travelling home on public transport at night in London than here (we have one bus that runs at 11pm in my town which is a massive luxury but very quiet and no bugger is around when you get off the bus!)

They will be fine. They're adults. I'm sure by age 18 and 19 they've had nights out in different cities and managed fine. London is bigger, but there's a lot more people happily going around at night.

sunshinesupermum · 14/02/2023 18:07

Ok my fears are stabbings, them getting separated and Dd ending up alone in the dark in a dodgy area….😬Feel free to alleviate my fears. They’ve navigated NYC alone on the subway but it was in daylight and in safe parts of the city. Son is pretty savvy.

London is safer than New York. Have lived in both. 18 and 19 years old? they will both be fine and have a ball as long as you stop projecting your anxiety. It will be buzzing with people both from the gig and elsewhere.

LlynTegid · 14/02/2023 18:26

The route via Muswell Hill and then bus to Highgate I think is the better one. Have been to concerts there and the walk is not far.

Northern line much more reliable than Great Northern from Alexandra Palace.

Oldraver · 14/02/2023 20:38

The walk up to Muswell Hill is usually chocca with other concert goers so should be 'safe'

We've been a few times and finding somewhere to stay in the area is hard

N4ish · 14/02/2023 20:58

Do people really plan and organise travel options for their adult children like this? I had no idea! My parents barely saw me when I was that age.

Doodar · 14/02/2023 20:59

über will be £££££ walk to Wood Green tube station, they'll be 100's of people going that way, south bound Piccadilly line straight to Kensington. as long as they're not gangsters they'll be fine.
its a lovely walk with great views of London www.google.com/maps/dir/Alexandra+Palace,+Alexandra+Palace+Way,+London+N22+7AY/Wood+Green+tube+station,+London/@51.5966151,-0.1319222,14.41z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x48761bd75310a7cd:0x9a38677b79460879!2m2!1d-0.1297604!2d51.5940573!1m5!1m1!1s0x48761be2449ab987:0x39f4a9a9893c4b68!2m2!1d-0.11001!2d51.5972173!3e2

@N4ish many people do not use public transport at all, are used as a child to walking or being taken everywhere by car (including short journeys to and from school). In rural areas especially.

I lived in a small town and then moved back to London. Friends came to visit and public transport was completely alien to them.

SamSmithsOutfit · 14/02/2023 16:36

Don't use Wood Green Tube or go to Wood Green or Turnpike Lane area- they are fine but probably not as safe as other areas. Use buses to Finsbury Park or Highgate tubes stations.

Don't bother with the overland trains as they'll never make that 11.15 one on time with everyone leaving and they are too limited.

They are 18/19 though! I thought you were going to say 14/15!

This. There will be a lot of people but I'd suggest getting a W3 to Finsbury Park or, if they walk a little further to the top or bottom of Muswell Hill they can get the W7 to the same destination.

They will be absolutely fine. But it is a crazy place to choose to stay in given where the gig is!! Kids eh.

Fair enough, maybe I’m being unfair. Hope the concert goes well and the travel is smooth!

NerrSnerr · 14/02/2023 21:11

@LlynTegid they're young adults though, they'll figure it out and the local tube station will be full of concert goers who will point them in the right direction. I can imagine Carlie Rae Jepson attracts a friendly bunch.

bookworm14 · 14/02/2023 21:24

Random members of the public don’t just get stabbed. The vast majority of stabbings are gang-related, which doesn’t make it ok, obviously, but it’s really not something two tourists from Devon need to worry about! They are adults, they will be fine (I was living by myself in Russia at a similar age!).

waterrat · 14/02/2023 22:08

It will be extremely safe OP. The crowds coming out of the concert will mean the area is v busy.

Kensington is a wierd choice as is other side of london but london is v safe ! 18 and 19 year olds who live in london travel around it all the time...are you confusing it with a dickensian version of london?!

The great thing in london is how busy it is absolutely everwhere at all times so it akways feels safe to me
