10,000 steps a day seems impossible??

Just started a 'healthy living ' programme (weight loss, well being, fitness etc).
One of the goals is 1000 steps a day??

I work from home, mad busy and sit at desk all day then gym at night. I've only done 1300 steps by teatime.

How the hell does anyone with a desk job do 10000 steps a day!!

My teenager walks to school and back and round a massive school all day and he only does 7500!!

It's only 5km, about an hour walking would have it done. I have an office job but an on 13,678 to the moment

Will finish on about 15,000

judesxmumx · 13/02/2023 16:54

I go for a 30 minute walk on my lunch break and that helps.

CarolDunne · 13/02/2023 16:54

I wfh too, but do a half hour walk before work, the same at lunch time and sometimes I head out at night for a walk

Could you go for a walk before work or in your lunch hour?

I easily hit 10000 on days I go into the office just from the commute (public transport with a short walk). It is harder from home.

greenacrylicpaint · 13/02/2023 16:55

short answer is: by putting the effort in.
on days I go to the office I manage 10k steps easily as I take the train and have a short walk either end.

on days I work from home I build in a 'commute' in the morning - 15 minutes walk. and then possibly walk to the shops in the afternoon or I go for a run.

liveforsummer · 13/02/2023 16:55

Can you walk to work or park further away? Go for a walk at lunch? Out with a friend in the evening?

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 13/02/2023 16:55

Always seem to manage 8-10k a day. I wfh at a desk but I do have 4 kids. I generally don't stop til about 10pm. One morning last week I got to 4k before 9am but yesterday didn't do that all day as I actually had a chill day. I try and leave my desk to wander/stretch my legs and do a small job in the home every hour.

liveforsummer · 13/02/2023 16:55

Sorry, missed the WFH bit, go out before work in the morning

Doowop1919 · 13/02/2023 16:57

3 X 30 minute walks will do it. Try one on the morning, one at lunch, one in the evening

thisbathiscoldnow · 13/02/2023 16:57

I work a busy desk job and my average steps per day are anywhere between 12,000 and 16,000
I have a dog so up and out of the house before work for a good hours walk and again after work/ evening seems to do it.

NeverTooLateToSing · 13/02/2023 16:58

For me, a 2-mile walk is about 5K steps, and takes about 35 minutes. You just have to factor in the time each day. I get up half an hour earlier to get it done. Plus, my WFH office is upstairs, so it feels like I'm always up and down the stairs!

XenoBitch · 13/02/2023 16:58

I find it a struggle!
I don't work, but I do have a dog. She is old and likes very slow sniffy walks. Plus, I hate walking! I walk to get somewhere, not for the sake of it.
Hence, I also struggle to hit 10k each day. I am lucky to hit 4k.

MargaretThursday · 13/02/2023 16:58

Ds found practicing the drums brought his step count up a lot. 🤣

Ralphschocolate · 13/02/2023 16:58

I walk on the spot in front of the TV in the evening if I don't get my 10,000 steps done during the day.

Cornishscrunchie · 13/02/2023 16:58

I WFH and get 10,000 steps in.

Walking around supermarkets / town centre is an easy way up upping steps! I do this in the evening if I need a boost :)

Abra1t · 13/02/2023 16:59

I jog on the spot to make up some steps but my phone pedometer only seems to grab about half of them.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 13/02/2023 16:59

A 1300 steps by teatime is a really good thing to be aware of......I find its easy to feel like a busy day has been active when I've hardly moved just because a lot has gone on! In reality that little movement is really not good for anyone. Can you break it down into 4 or 5 sections? So do a fifteen minute walk before breakfast, one at lunchtime, walk to the gym, and walk home maybe?

You can also get walking videos on YouTube, if its very icy outside and I worry I'm going to slip if I walk or run out there, I often do one of these eg

Dyrne · 13/02/2023 17:01

Yeah as others have said it does require a conscious effort. I’ve been doing it since the start of Jan and I do have to plan it in to get it - a lot of the advice online is all about doing steps while waiting for the kettle to boil etc which frankly does fuck all.

I’m 5ft3 and 10K steps is about 7km for me - so about an hour and a half’s worth of walking.

Can you do a quick loop around your street before/after work as a “commute”? I also try and get out for half an hour at lunch.

What kind of work do you do? Can some calls be taken off camera so you can do it on the move?

5km is only 3 miles which averages at about 6,000 steps.

Most people need to walk 5 miles to get 10,000 steps in.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 13/02/2023 17:03

Genuine question - How do you know how accurate your step counter is ? On the days I walk 2 miles to work and 2 miles home (6.5k total) I still only make about 8k steps, so I'm intrigued that other posters hit 10k steps walking 5km. Today I've done a 5km run and been on my feet for a lot of the day and the step count is at 7700.

Sucessinthenewyear · 13/02/2023 17:03

It depends on your lifestyle. I walked to school and back 3 times a day and that alone is about 9,000 steps. I don’t have to fit in working.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 13/02/2023 17:04

I WFH too if I don't go anywhere I do about 4000 up and down stairs backwards and forwards to kitchen to make endless coffee, and across garden to DH workshop to tell him lunch is ready or there's mail etc I make myself do this rather than phoning texting him. my house is a bit larger than average but I try to get up and walk around for about 5 minutes per hour.
I had thought of making myself to a walking commute but as we live on a road with no footpaths I don't fancy diving on to verge ditch every 30 seconds to avoid maniacs doing 50mph. it is not always practical for me to go for a walk later I sometimes do an exercise you tube or a bit of pilates
when I do leave house by car, I try and make sure I fit in a walk but to be honest my weekly average is about 6-7000 per day 3 days of 4000, 1 of at least 10,000 the others about 6-7000, i'm ok with this

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 13/02/2023 17:04

x-posted! Interesting that my figures don't seem miles out after all.

Interoperability · 13/02/2023 17:04

I'm 5ft 2, and if I run 5km I'm only about 6000 steps done.

Desperately trying to keep up with running and 10,000 steps due to my recent RA diagnosis.

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 13/02/2023 17:06

You go for a walk. You'll never get anywhere near it otherwise with a deskjob. Takes me about an hour a day.
