Just started a 'healthy living ' programme (weight loss, well being, fitness etc).
One of the goals is 1000 steps a day??

I work from home, mad busy and sit at desk all day then gym at night. I've only done 1300 steps by teatime.

How the hell does anyone with a desk job do 10000 steps a day!!

My teenager walks to school and back and round a massive school all day and he only does 7500!!

It may be possible to clock up loads of steps wandering around taking phone calls... and this is obviously better than sitting down.. but in no way comparable to steps running or walking at a brisk pace.

Surely the effort needs to be considered, not just the number

Of course.
10K steps wandering around is better than not doing that.
5K steps from going for a 3 mile run is better than a 3 mile jog.

I tend to do fewer wandering or dog walking steps (what with not having a dog!) but do quite a bit of hard exercise on most days. I had only done 4k steps by 9pm but went for a 3 mile fast walk (both to clear my head, get out of the house and do some exercise).

I am doing an 11 or 12 mile run over the w/e and hopefully a hard bike ride for about 11 miles. It all works out for me in the end so I tend not to get hung up on the steps (apart from when I enter a 10K step challenge cos I'm a twit!).

If I wasn't able to get out for those late night walks (which was the case when DS2 was younger) then there would be many days I wouldn't hit 10K steps so maybe I'd look into ways to increase my wandering around ones, like during phone calls.
