Is Sylvana Close in Uxbridge ex-council housing?

On the off chance that somebody may know the area! Trying to settle a debate with a colleague. I think that Close is the biggest clue plus the appearance of the houses. She thinks it is all upmarket because Boris is the local MP 😕

"Close" is no more council than a white PCP Range Rover Vogue on the drive. On Streetview it looks a lot less ex- council house than some of the neighbouring streets.

But does it make a difference? Every town has social housing somewhere. Even Windsor, and the Queen used to live there.

Workjobfind · 13/02/2023 14:32

The royal family live in social housing, technically

WhiteFire · 13/02/2023 14:36

Why is Close an indicator? That's the strangest thing I've heard in a long time.

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 13/02/2023 14:37

I'm not getting the Close thing 🧐

WhatTrophy · 13/02/2023 14:39

Round here "Close" would indicate a nice privately built suburban cul de sac, probably built in the 60/70s

WhatTrophy · 13/02/2023 14:43

Wasn't it Brookside Close?

That's what close means to me. A cul de sac with small modern detached houses

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2023 14:45

I've looked on Google street view and I'd say no, but just because you have a Conservative MP it doesn't make the whole constituency 'upmarket' more that he got the most votes of the people who voted, which could be as little as 20% of the eligible voters.

I live in an ex council house and have a Conservative MP. It is not an upmarket area. No idea that a 'Close' is a LA housing signifier. I just thought it was a common name for a Cul de Sac?

Yes, it looks quite 'Brookside' 1970/80s new builds. More likely to be private rather than social housing.

UnicorseTime · 13/02/2023 14:51

675k for a house it's our of the reach of most people!

namechange8621 · 13/02/2023 15:32

Thank you for replying. I agree that they look like the houses in Brookside Close. I am still undecided but veering towards categorizing them as non-council modern builds. Down my way, "Close" denotes ex-Council so I wasn't sure. She is potentially doing a private sale but doesn't really want to pay £800k for an ex-C. It's not snobbery, just that it might take longer to resell.

Not necessarily

This is off to the right of long lane in Hillingdon

I vaguely know of it

woodhill · 13/02/2023 15:36

It is a reasonable area

Thanks. Is it a nice place to live?

It's mixed I think like everywhere

Where are you now?

Jagley · 13/02/2023 15:38

Never heard of close being an indicator for social housing. Had a look on Google maps, doesn't look like ex council to me.

It's for my colleague. She is in Bucks right now (Gt Missenden) living with partner's family but wants to move into TFL zones. It seems good value for London the amount of space which is why I considered it may be social.

I don't think it's that near either tube station but it may be deceptive

Ruislip is nice but probably more expensive

Cookerhood · 13/02/2023 16:17

It's Hillingdon rather than Uxbridge, I think. About a mile from Hillingdon & Uxbridge tube stations. Bits of Long Lane can be a bit grotty but I think it's ok. As far as I know, it's not ex council but I'm sure that information is easy to find out. Ickenham or Ruislip are nicer, but more expensive.

woodhill · 13/02/2023 16:18

Yes and Long Lane is always busy

However Uxbridge is good for shopping and you are near A40 obviously

Uxbridge is generally cheaper for an equivalent house than Ruislip or Pinner. The Sweetcroft Lane area (including that road I think) used to fall under Bishopshalt school catchment. No idea if it does at the moment. That area was always private housing to my knowledge. Its a fair walk to Hillingdon station from there.

Uxbridge and South Ruislip is a pretty mixed constituency - its not a safe seat by any means. The neighbouring seat of Ruislip Northwood & Pinner would elect a wheelie bin with a blue rosette if that is a key criteria. Unfortunately this can mean getting the MP equivalent of a wheelie bin with a blue rosette.

Its a big expense to go to just to be in zone 6 plus she may need to change cars (in the new emission zone or so close it makes no difference). Is this really the reason for looking to move?

liveforsummer · 13/02/2023 16:41

They are mostly detached properties - not like any social housing I've ever seen especially for that time of building

namechange8621 · 13/02/2023 16:42

Good point re ULEZ. She is keen to no longer live with the in laws, I think! She wants to feel like she is living in the capital, the usual reasons, I suppose.

It's not my cup of tea, personally. If I lived in a city, I would want it to feel more alive and relevant than that area. I don't think I have been there more than twice but it is on the news a lot because of the Boris link.

OP posts:
UnicorseTime · 13/02/2023 16:47

Hmm not sure she will feel she's in the capital there. Its a way from the nearest tube

namechange8621 · 13/02/2023 16:55

Also, I think that when prices fall a bit, a period property would always appeal more than a 1980s sterile looking property.
