Is Sylvana Close in Uxbridge ex-council housing?

On the off chance that somebody may know the area! Trying to settle a debate with a colleague. I think that Close is the biggest clue plus the appearance of the houses. She thinks it is all upmarket because Boris is the local MP 😕

It absolutely isn't London, it's very much suburbia. From there it would take an hour to get into London, probably the same as where they are now.

IWineAndDontDine · 13/02/2023 23:10

Boris as mp means it's upmarket? Has she ever been to Uxbridge? I lived there for 4 years and still live near there and it's definitely not upmarket.

Solow12 · 13/02/2023 23:15

They’re ex-RAF houses. A very close family member lives there - I have all the info 🤣

It's absolutely in a London borough so it's definitely in London.

However -

It's an ok area op. Good 20 minute walk from the two nearest tube stations. I wouldn't say there's loads going on locally but that's not dissimilar in lots of zone six London. You're not central but you're also not in a town that has its own stuff going on...

I'd prefer to live in a new flat by Hayes station personally - same borough but less than 30 minutes to Tottenham court road on the new Elizabeth line (as opposed to more than double that from Sylvana Close..). But we all have different priorities! Depends what she wants.

Have a look on zooplankton see how many have been sold.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 13/02/2023 23:41

Only person I ever knew that lived there was a military family. I think they are RAF housing (ex?)

From the days of RAF Uxbridge? Would presumably have been officers quarters - those houses look a damned site better and are better located than the general military housing for RAF Northolt!

BarbaraofSeville · 14/02/2023 08:53

It depends what is affordable. After all, very few people can afford well over half a million for a house without significant previous equity or an inheritance.

Plus a period property could cost quite a lot more to heat than a more modern one, which is now a significant consideration for many.

Whether the price is reasonable and what resale is like will depend on how the price compares with other houses locally, plus the wider economy.

LittleBearPad · 14/02/2023 08:56

Close doesn’t mean social housing. How odd.

rcat74 · 14/02/2023 08:57

It might be ex-MOD housing in Uxbridge. It was all sold off when the RAF station closed.

namechange8621 · 14/02/2023 10:03

"ex-MOD housing" that's interesting, thank you. So they are not really council or built for private purchasers. Do they count as social housing?

Oh do spill 😁
The thing is that my friend is very upwardly mobile and sees it as a direct move to a detached family home without going through the starter home phase. However, if it isn't full of the 'beautiful people' doing 'cool things' then she definitely won't enjoy living there at all.

You sound like a terrible friend. Let her do her own research rather than being determined to bring her dream down.

louise5754 · 14/02/2023 10:11

Very strange that you think close means council housing

louise5754 · 14/02/2023 10:12

This post is rather outing too op

No need for that. We researched it together during a few lunch breaks and never got nearly as much as I did from this thread. She now knows that it is probably not what she is looking for. How does that make me a bad friend?

I think I will stop there. Thanks for the contributions.

A street of almost entirely detached houses is never going to be ex council

As for 'close' meaning ex-council. That's just ridiculous.

Mugparrot · 14/02/2023 10:14

Fwiw in London, some ex council flats are exactly where you'll find the "beautiful people doing cool things"

"beautiful people doing cool things" is not the phrase which springs to mind alongside "Uxbridge" 😂

There is a good University in the area and that section is probably the better part of Uxbridge (along with Uxbridge Common) but cool - not so much.

That said as PP say - plenty of ex social housing in London is now gentrified.

Cookerhood · 14/02/2023 13:13

It's absolutely in a London borough so it's definitely in London.

It's about as far from London as it can be & still count as London. I grew up near by & would never have said I lived in London, I would have said I lived near London. There certainly is no city living vibe!
Makes sense about the MOD housing - it has that look about it but I didn't think it was ex social housing due to being mainly detached.

it's definitely ropey in Uxbridge

Very mixed area and traffic was gridlocked tonight around the area

When I went there only 3/4 years ago there were 2 stabbings on campus in 1 year 😬

Solow12 · 14/02/2023 21:07

Shame there was a nasty comment, OP. I wouldn’t say it’s beautiful people doing beautiful things, but my family have been happily living there for about 30 years! Mainly middle aged families I think. Some older couples whose children have flown the nest. And some new professional couples who have moved the floor plans around. Once upon a time there would be kids playing out on the grassy roundabout thing but not so much now I think.
