Where are all the raspberries?

I've not been able to get any for a week. I only have access to Waitrose, Asda and the co-op but there are none to be found. I eat them daily and I'm missing them. Frozen won't do. Too soggy. The local greengrocers is extortionate and the quality poor so that's a no-go. I'm in the north west. Has anyone else noticed a shortage? All other fruits seem available. A first world problem I know.

They aren’t in season here so maybe less are being imported due to costs?

HannaHat · 13/02/2023 10:11

Yes I've noticed, NW here too. Can't remember the last time they were actually nice though.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 13/02/2023 10:12

It's the wrong time of year for raspberries. Summer and autumn are when they are best.

We’re midlands and my baby lives off raspberries; we get fresh and frozen, no issues here.

Summertimesunshineandfizz · 13/02/2023 10:13

I noticed lots in Sainsbury’s yesterday. Didn’t buy any.

mogtheexcellent · 13/02/2023 10:14

My DD has eaten them. She eats a punnet a day. Except in summer as they are 'too squishy' Hmm

AutisticLegoLover · 13/02/2023 10:17

I eat 100g a day. Measured because I'm on a health kick diet. I know they aren't in season here but until this last week I've not had any trouble getting them.

DH noticed strawberries in Sainsbury’s, SW, and said “ooh look, strawberries are coming in” I looked at the label and said - yep, they’re coming in from Morocco. Nothing wrong with fruit from there, btw.

Pennyforthezombies · 13/02/2023 10:18

Loads in my local Waitrose, SE and all other supermarkets- sounds like a problem in your area

AutisticLegoLover · 13/02/2023 10:19

The co-op gets them shipped from Morocco. I don't know about the others.

I saw some in Asda, but there weren't too many. Maybe few packets.

emmathedilemma · 13/02/2023 11:45

i've been buying frozen ones, cheaper, tastier and probably less air miles.

madeyemoody · 13/02/2023 11:50

Don't know but I'm not spending £2.99 on a punnet of strawberries.

Bought frozen which are pretty grim but 1.5kg bag for the same price. They are only for smoothies and yoghurt so it's not too bad. I know a lot of friends whose kids have fresh berries as the only fruit they eat and it's pretty grim out there right now for fruit. So expensive

madeyemoody · 13/02/2023 11:52

@emmathedilemma I've been buying frozen but have to disagree at 'taste better' my strawberries defrost and are slimey! They don't taste gross but definitely not the same kick as fresh strawberries

Phos · 13/02/2023 11:55

I’ve found them in Morrisons and asda lately and they were nice. Obviously imported this time of year, can’t remember where from. None in Sainsbury’s yesterday but we went a bit later on Sunday when fruit and veg availability is always a little hit and miss.

I can’t say I’ve noticed a particular scarcity though.

emmathedilemma · 13/02/2023 12:21

ah strawberries don't freeze as well as raspberries @madeyemoody it probably depends what you're doing with them too, I don't eat them just as fruit, they get mixed in with yogurt or overnight oats so doesn't matter if they're a bit mushy.

PaniniHead · 13/02/2023 12:30

My local Lidl and Aldi have them (NW)

Girasoli · 13/02/2023 12:35

No berry shortages where I am in the SE - DS2 is super fussy but luckily goes through a lot of strawberries/blueberries/raspberries so I don't have to worry about scurvy.

AnotherSpare · 13/02/2023 12:43

If you're on a health kick you'd do better to only eat food that's in season. Raspberries that are imported are sprayed for preserving, frozen in transit, bashed around.
Eating seasonal food means it's more likely to be fresh and grown locally.
Much better for the environment and much better for your health.

Namecangeonce · 13/02/2023 12:52

Local M and S no fruit whatsoever this morning.
Sainsbos other day no raspberries, blueberries. NW here.

verdantverdure · 13/02/2023 13:29

I can't raspberries either. Or cherry tomatoes.

I got cherries instead. Not the same.

I managed to get asparagus, courgettes and broccoli this week though. That's the first week for a while.

Then paid £3.70 for a bottle of flipping salad cream for a visiting relation. £3.70! Blush

soundsofthesixties · 13/02/2023 13:30

Got some in Sainsburys this morning.m

queenrollo · 13/02/2023 13:39

most of this stuff is grown in places like Spain and they are having real issues with the cost of heating the glasshouses through an unseasonably cold growing season. My local greengrocer even posted on the website this week that the next couple of weeks will see things either unavailable or at a massively increased cost.
