A day on my own in London

What would you do if you had the day in London. DH is going too but we are going to do our own thing and meet for lunch.

I love the architecture and secret hidden stuff. Any suggestions?

(I’ve booked tickets for the Mithraeum)

jubilee walk

city walk

why don’t you do a walk that takes in sights. A friend and I did one a few years ago that took us around parts of London we’d not been before, including museums I’d not known about. Here’s a couple of websites.

I did a walk in the summer. I covered 12 miles and saw all the ‘sights’.

But thank you anyway.

I'd like to do one of the London Underground tours of disused stations:

mountsleepyhead · 12/02/2023 19:32

Bank of England Museum? Free and less frequented than others.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 12/02/2023 19:34

I loved the Mithraeum! It would be the British Museum for me. I never get tired of it.

corlan · 12/02/2023 19:38

Have you been to the Charterhouse in the City. Only opened to the public a few years ago. Really interesting and atmospheric place.

I like The Wallace Collection in Manchester Square, just off Oxford St. then a walk around Soho & China Town. National Gallery if time.

C1N1C · 12/02/2023 19:48

Hidden quirks would be:

John Soane museum
Dennis Sever's museum
All the blue plaques scattered around (look on Wikipedia etc for ones you want to hunt down)

BarrelOfOtters · 12/02/2023 19:53

Sir John soames, Wallace collection or wellcome foundation.

or I’d wander round the City looking at wren churches.

Scottishknitter · 12/02/2023 19:53

Sky garden (free but pre book)

Sir John Soane museum

Any / all of the Inns of Court
And the Temple Church in Inner Temple

And you know you can’t beat St Paul’s. Pricey but the ticket is valid for a year.

LazJaz · 12/02/2023 19:54

@C1N1C I was going to say exactly these places!

free lunchtime concert (lots of churches in the city have them on so easy to combine with Mithraeum)

eat well (preferred cuisine?) have excellent coffee

enjoy!

I’m planning on the Temple Church having stumbled upon it last time I went but with no time to look round.

Annoyingly I’m going on Tuesday and the Soane Museum is shut.

Various areas related to the "services", then the British museum, and underground metro system, and street food

jacult · 12/02/2023 20:01

The Museum of the Home is great. They show the interiors of houses through the ages and how people lived. Lovely garden too.

GrapesOfRoss · 12/02/2023 20:04

St Stephen Walbrook is about 20 metres from the Mithraeum- a Wren church and one of the most beautiful in London. The altar is fascinating too, by Henry Moore.

The Imperial War Museum is really interesting and not very busy. I’d like to go to the War Rooms too.

Greenwich has the Naval College (stunning buildings!) and the Observatory. You can get boat tours along the river too - v interesting.

I am dying to go to the Bank of England museum but it’s only open Monday - Friday!

I love Museum of London! A real hidden gem and free as well. But I think the London Wall site has now been closed and it's been relocated somewhere else.

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 12/02/2023 20:14

i haven’t checked if any of those are open on Tuesday - and if this Tuesday then obvs too soon for Handel/Hendrix.

have a great day! (Jealous)
