You need to narrow down your question, where to specifically? No point recommending easyjet if you're flying to Australia for example.

UnicorseTime · 11/02/2023 18:53

Following... we want to go to Australia and are tall/large.

Thanks - the popular European destinations so short haul flights (budget or chartered) would be a good start.

I think Tui have a generous seat pitch.

NotRainingToday · 11/02/2023 19:03

Charter airlines like British Airways or Lufthansa are a lot better than RyanAir or Easyjet, and even better if you pay for the extra legroom seats

karamazing · 11/02/2023 19:06

Thanks. At what height do Ryanair and Easyjet start becoming impossibly cramped? Extra legroom seats are £££s as far as I can make out.

EasyJet exit/bulkhead seats 100% for short haul . It’s only a few pounds more.

Recently flown with BA and their new fleets are awful! I’m 5ft5 and my knees were touching the seat in front.

IntentionalError · 11/02/2023 19:07

Most short-haul airlines now allow you to pay more for the additional legroom seats on board. These are usually on emergency exit rows or row 1. If I remember correctly, it’s row 12 on BA / Easyjet A320s. Only fit, able bodied adults are allowed to sit on the emergency exit rows, for obvious reasons.

StillWantingADog · 11/02/2023 19:08

I think all are much of a muchness but pay extra for extra legroom.
I’m tall and never pay extra but find aisle seats far more tolerable

TakeMe2Insanity · 11/02/2023 19:09

Norwegian is surprisingly good.

I don't think DC would be allowed to sir at the front but I am not certain. Talking of Easyjet, are you still able to take a small suitcase on board. The booking screens show a rucksack as an example which must fit under the seat but mention a small trolley is OK. What if you put it in the over head locker? They would not be able to say anythng, really, or would they?

Norwegian is surprisingly good.

You are right! I used them a while ago when we didn't need the legroom and there was loads of space. Odd flight times though, I think. You can't get it all on a budget!

OP posts:
karamazing · 11/02/2023 19:15

I am hoping NOT to have to fork out for legroom and just have a regular seat big enough to fit a six foot four guy. It added a lot onto Jet2 prices when I tried to calculate it as that times eight fares (there and back) since we all need to sit together.

We are flying easyJet on Monday and have booked 2 exit seats for DH and I, with the row of 3 behind for the kids. We'll rotate around during the flight I expect as it is 6 hours.

With the booking of legroom seats you get an overhead bag as well, whereas the only luggage included with a standard seat is an under seat size one

Diamondsmile · 11/02/2023 19:15

SeatGuru is excellent for finding the aircraft on a flight route and giving seat width and pitch.

I agree TUI extra leg room seats are good.

IntentionalError · 11/02/2023 19:16

You can put your small bag in the locker on EasyJet. In order to take a standard sized wheeled carry-on case on board, you now have to book ‘speedy boarding’, or whatever they call it. If you don’t book that & try to take the case on board they will charge you £40 at the gate. Ask me how I know that… 😡
Be very careful with baggage rules, though, because low-cost airlines are notorious for changing them every five minutes to catch out as many people as possible & charge them extra.

IhearyouClemFandango · 11/02/2023 19:16

That seat booking cost is £100 for there and back which is good value for extra legroom and two extra bags.

When we flew with TUI a few years back it cost a fair bit more to select seats, even though they weren't extra legroom ones.

Norwegian people are often tall, so maybe not surprising.

I've had 'extra legroom' seats on easyJet that were nothing of the sort. I got it free because I checked in very late, if I'd paid extra I'd have been fuming.

OP look on seatguru.com, you can see all the plane layouts and see what seats to book.

IntentionalError · 11/02/2023 19:18

You make a very fair point about de-facto discrimination against tall people, OP. If airlines were charging obese people extra, there would be a massive outcry.

Hahaha don't try and pretend you nosiness is an obvious part of the question that she's missing out 😂

IhearyouClemFandango · 11/02/2023 19:20

Well it is, why would someone recommend easyJet say for a long haul flight?

TWmover · 11/02/2023 19:21

There is a website called 'Airline quality' and 'Skytrax' which has info for different airlines, seat ratings and user reviews, even down to specific routings. It also has seat maps for aircraft and which are the best seats to pick on the aircraft on that route. I'm very tall!

Well, I find it a bit frustrating that the dirt cheap fares are always going to be massively inflated because two out of four people in our family need the extra space. Or perhaps I should suck it up and happily pay it upon the basis that holidays are going to get more expensive in general and more of a luxury than before.

Do you find that it is possible to identify suitable seats without paying extra if I do some detective work in advance? 😃

Hardly, I work in the aviation industry and know the answers will be irrelevant without that info. I couldn't give a shiny shite where OP is going but I can't answer without at least a vague geographical region.

I'd suggest Norwegian, Jet2 or BA. Look at exit rows not bulkheads. Under 12s can't sit there so you might need to be a row behind if you're travelling as a family. Bulkhead seats have a hard wall in front. It gives more knee room but not necessarily leg room, You can't extend feet out there like you can underneath the seat in front of you. If DH has comparatively long legs I wouldnt consider bulkhead.
