Car insurance renewal 😣

Boshi · 11/02/2023 14:53

If you have renewed your car insurance this year how did it compare to last year?

I usually expect it to go up a bit but mine has gone up £700 from £900.

Is that a bit steep? I know the cost of living has gone up but I didn’t expect it to affect car insurance

did you shop around ?
surely you did not accept that quote ?

febbabies2023 · 11/02/2023 14:55

That does seem a bit steep - just done mine last month and I think it went up £19 and I had a claim on there (someone drove into my parked car 🙃)

Did you use a comparison site or just a renewal at the same company

userxx · 11/02/2023 14:59

An extra £700 ? Nah, that's not right.

growgrowinggrown · 11/02/2023 15:04

My provider usually sends a renewal 30-60 under what it currently is, then i call them up and ask can they do any better. 100% success rate so far of having it further reduced with a phone call.

I guess I've been lucky, I've never had it increase in the last 10years.

JudithHarper · 11/02/2023 15:05

My renewal came through this morning and it's £25 more than last year.

unicornsarereal72 · 11/02/2023 15:06

Mine was this month I have house and car insurance in together with emergency call out for house repairs. It went up by £100 for all 3 together.

GCWorkNightmare · 11/02/2023 15:07

Mine went down. (3 cars on a multi car policy.)

MrsAmaretto · 11/02/2023 15:28

Mine went up £20

Catspyjamas17 · 11/02/2023 15:32

Normally, as Direct Line were good when I made a claim years ago, I give them a call and get them to knock money off if they put the price up. This year they put it up so much - 25% - I thought that was absolutely taking the piss and I went straight elsewhere. Same cover for below last year's premium price.

MeanderingGently · 11/02/2023 15:33

Just renewed mine, it had gone up over £100, I was shocked as it's a small car, small mileage and I've not claimed anything. Had a shop around but couldn't find anything cheaper so rang the company (LV) and asked them directly why it had gone up so much. They happily offered to knock off £50 which I happily accepted. Worth ringing....

CherryogDog · 11/02/2023 15:34

Mine was £190 last year, new quote was £270. Went on the comparison sites and got it for £136.
Benefit of being old!

LadyJ2023 · 11/02/2023 15:35

Our insurance was going to go up another 350 on top of 800 so rather than renew we shopped around and ended up paying 50 less off the normal 800ish a year

Epicstorm · 11/02/2023 15:46

Rang because my husband's had gone up £200. He’s hard of hearing so I did the ringing. They knocked some off and asked if his details were the same. I said he’d retired and they knocked off more bringing it well under what it was last year. I asked about my own. Quote was the same as last year. I’ve retired too so they brought it down . Can’t remember exact figures but was an amount well worth saving. Can’t believe it had never occurred to me that retiring would make a difference.

BungleandGeorge · 11/02/2023 15:47

I presume for that amount someone on the policy is young/ has convictions/ has multiple claims/ has a high risk car? I’d guess your insurance company has moved into the conservative end of the market and whacked your premium up because it’s no longer their target market. Look for another company

Lots of accidents happen while commuting.

Thismummyrunstheshow · 11/02/2023 16:23

Mine has gone up £120 from last year- no changes/claims in the past year

Blablablablaba · 11/02/2023 18:30

Mine just due a couple of days ago. Yes I agree I was shocked at the renewal and the price price I cld get.

I went from just below £200 to £260 and the renewal was actually about £300. I switched to get the cheaper price! I was shocked too. No claims an extra years no claims bonus taking it 17yrs on total.

Boshi · 11/02/2023 22:42

I’m even more baffled now, I had a proper look through the comparison sites and the best prices are still about £500 over.. and the excess on some of the policies are crazy, like £1200 excess (see below)! Feel like I’m in a different dimension

No one young/high risk/only 1 vehicle and the last claim was 5 years ago..

Wondering if I wait for the supposed sweet spot of 21 days before renewal (it’s currently 28 days) if that will make a difference <desperate>

Ring them up and ask why it has gone up so much, they'll likely reduce it for you.

Boshi · 11/02/2023 22:47

Looking at my history, £1470 in 2020, £1184 2021, £942 2022, £1400-1500 in 2023 what is going on!

what normally triggers such a massive rise (no claims recently)

Yes I think I’ll have to do that, it doesn’t always help though, was with Churchill before and they wouldn’t budge on their renewal quote

FenghuangHoyan · 11/02/2023 22:51

Mine was about the same, maybe £20 less.

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 11/02/2023 22:51

For a price like that you probably need a broker: either there's something very risky about you, or you've misunderstood a question. Do you live in a super-rough area? Do you have a weird profession? Are you omitting to mention that your one vehicle happens to be a Ferrari?

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 11/02/2023 22:52

Definitely ask them what's doing the damage when you ring up.

YerAWizardHarry · 11/02/2023 22:53

I pay £55 a month and claimed less than 2 years ago…. Definitely seems weirdly high
