London tube question!

Rollerbird · 11/02/2023 08:23

Arriving at Euston on the train this afternoon. Staying in London with a 6 year old until Monday afternoon. Visiting 'attractions'. Staying near Leicester Square. What train ticket can I get for tubes etc? Best value.?
Also is it worth taking the microscooter?

Easiest just to use your contactless card. It will work out your usage over the day and charge you the cheapest fare. 6 yr old goes free on tube and buses. Just take them through the larger gates with you. Remember to tap in and tap out on the tube but only tap in once on the bus.

Ostryga · 11/02/2023 08:26

Yes just use contactless. There’s a limit of around £9 per day.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 11/02/2023 08:26

Microscooter would be a firm no from me.

FlippityFlippityFlop · 11/02/2023 08:27

If you have a contactless card just use that to tap on and buses/trains,/tubes. TFL automatically apply the cap depending on where you have travelled.

Merrow · 11/02/2023 08:27

Definitely don't take the scooter

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/02/2023 08:28

No scooter ,use your card.

Rollerbird · 11/02/2023 08:28

Do I need a zip card? For child? Read something about it?

Runssometimes · 11/02/2023 08:30

Nope children under 11 are free. But use the wider ticket gates as they go through as same time as you when you tap your card.

Pinkflipflop85 · 11/02/2023 08:30

You don't need a zip card for a 6 year old in Central London. Just take them through the big gates with you.

Hard no on the scooter!

prisscalledwanda · 11/02/2023 08:31

Make sure you always use the same card though, otherwise you may end up paying more than you needed to

HavfrueDenizKisi · 11/02/2023 08:31

Not really. Officially kids in london need a zip oyster to travel free and from 11 they are charged kids rates on trains. But they only get one aged 6 and no one will ask. You can't get one anyway for him. They are applied for online, with a photo and take a week or so to arrive.

AnotherNameChangeYes · 11/02/2023 08:32

Make sure you swipe on and off with the same card!

Your DD is free so she can just go through the barrier with you, easiest to take her through the big gate barrier.

No to the scooter.

Doveyouknow · 11/02/2023 08:35

You don't need a card for a 6 year old - they travel for free. Once they are 11 they need a card as they pay on the tube. As everyone says use your contactless card / phone. Make sure you use the same one each time. No to the scooter.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 11/02/2023 08:37

I’d download the Citymapper app & look at bus routes too. You’re very central and that way you get to see outside. Again, your child’s free & you just need to tap your contactless card when you get on. Also, if you can avoid rush hours on Monday, do - especially on the tube!

Optionally · 11/02/2023 08:37

Tap in and out through the big gates on the tube, and tap once when you get on the bus.

Microscooter isn’t allowed in stations and will be hard to manage on crowded pavements. Only time it would be useful is in the parks, for example getting from High Street Kensington tube through the park to the Diana Memorial Playground - which is otherwise a rather long walk for a tired 6yo. Or you might also be able to use it on the Thames Path, depending how busy it is.

LlynTegid · 11/02/2023 08:37

Use contactless as suggested.

windyarse · 11/02/2023 08:39

I would just get the bus tbh, unless you have a specific interest in taking the underground. Bus is very easy, cheaper and you get to see things.

Most of what you are likely to want to see will be walkable from your hotel anyway.

brenda21 · 11/02/2023 08:43

Also agree use the buses. A great way to see what's outside. And you can change buses and only get charged one fare within an hour. So if you got say the X from Euston at midday, you tap in. Get off after 30 minutes. Get in another bus at 12.40. Tap in. You don't get charged a second time. Then you can stay in that bus for as long as it goes, you still don't get charged anymore. A great cheap way of seeing what's going on (and try to get the upstairs front seats Grin)

BlueHeelers · 11/02/2023 08:46

YABU to even THINK about a small child on a micro scooter in London.

Or anywhere actually.

FlippityFlippityFlop · 11/02/2023 08:48

You can set up a TFL account and link your card to it so you can see the journeys that you've made. If you've forgotten to tap in or out you can then complete your journey online and you will get charged correctly.

BlueHeelers · 11/02/2023 08:48

Buses are fab. As is walking. Central London is very walkable.

No scooter!

Mardyface · 11/02/2023 08:50

I love microscooters! But not in central London. And not in museums either.

Saw two people on scooters in Kingsway yesterday - busy lunchtime traffic and my heart was in my mouth watching them among all the buses and taxis. And those were adults.

BlueHeelers · 11/02/2023 09:48

I actually don’t much care about the safety of the adults doing the scooting.

It’s children - with careless parents - bashing into my ankles and calves and shins that I detest. I’ve had a couple of very sore tendons because of children allowed to scoot on pavements bashing into me.

The parents are to blame for that.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 11/02/2023 10:21

Other tips - when on a London bus, you get on at the front and off in the middle / at the back. The name of the next stop will be both displayed and announced so you don’t need to worry about missing it.

On bus and tube, have your card ready before you need to tap it so you can go straight through.

On the tube escalators, there will be people walking down the left side so make sure you’re both on the right - especially if it’s busy.
