London tube question!

Rollerbird · 11/02/2023 08:23

Arriving at Euston on the train this afternoon. Staying in London with a 6 year old until Monday afternoon. Visiting 'attractions'. Staying near Leicester Square. What train ticket can I get for tubes etc? Best value.?
Also is it worth taking the microscooter?

but on other streets it’s fine

You might think it’s fine, but I guarantee that other pedestrians do not.

It’s incredibly selfish.

I’m talking about little kids doing walking speed on a push-scooter, not the full grown men on speeding electric scooters!

Crumpetdisappointment · 11/02/2023 18:29

i dont think the bus is always quicker,
it is great to see
but the tube is fast and exciting

So the child I almost tripped over at Paddington this morning when he stopped suddenly in front of me because he’d overturned his scooter was a mirage?

MoiraDavidson · 12/02/2023 00:31

So where are children permitted to ride scooters?

Wear a cross-body bag, hold it close to your body, and don't get your phone out...

wear good running trainers in case you need to flee at any point, maybe a hard hat to protect from falling pigeon crap, sunglasses as the way the light bounces off all the glass fronted towers is particularly harmful, full first aid kit, passport in case you're stopped by the MET and asked for identification

Have a great time OP

Every time I've been to London recently I've been amazed how quiet it is. The buses from the city almost empty, even at rush hour.

This made me laugh. What about a mini A to Z in case anyone asks you for directions as you can't get your phone out? (I still have mine for old times' sake). Plus you're carrying so much at this point, you may as well add a sewing kit, emergency foil blanket and some Kendall mint cake.

That said, the trainers are a good shout. My son came back on the tube from hockey training in Paddington this week wearing socks and sliders. How is that appropriate footwear for getting off and on escalators and walking through a freezing park in January? (Not to mention the crimes against fashion).

Right, better start packing the full kit, I'm off to Kings Cross shortly. Wish me luck (particularly as I don't own a crossover bag).

GrapesOfRoss · 12/02/2023 07:32

@SisterAgatha has it right. Have fun, op!

I suggested a cross over bag and I am a Londoner of 20 years and always have one (my current one os a Mulberry satchel with a cross body strap) . If you do a lot of walking and use public transport a lot (as Londoners do) they are just easier. Better for walking and minimise the likliehood of accidentally leaving it on the bus/train.

Ah so you don't need a visitor oyster card? Contactless is better? We are also visiting soon!

Correct. Contactless bank card. But every adult needs their own, you can’t pay for 2 people
on one card. Kids under 16 you can usually get on buses for free without any sort of card. And you have to tap on the yellow circle shaped reader in the tube station even if the gates are open. In Oxford recently i noticed you tap
out on buses. Not the case in London on buses. And you cannot pay cash on buses either.

So where are children permitted to ride scooters?

Not in Central London with parents who don't know what they're doing.

Fucking hate scooters.

Fairly obviously a joke I thought.

Life long Londoner. Never have a phone stolen but maybe I have that angry Londoner look which suggests I’m gonna steal your phone, and not offer you a seat on the tube, and accidentally on purpose kick your slow moving wheeled suitcase.

Absolute no to the scooter.

I feel like I've met my soulmate (not lifelong Londoner but lived here long enough to feel like one).

Another one hard no-ing the scooter.
