Working from home.

Its not a criticism but why are so many people still working from home. I genuinely don't know.
Im not in a job that can be done from home so I've had to go in throughout.

OP posts:

I think it depends on home circumstances, we are technically 50/50 but a lot of my colleagues are single and living alone or in house shares so they tend to go in more for company and so they can be warm for free! Also they don't have space for a proper desk set-up, WiFi not great etc.
I usually go in three days a week, I don't function very well if I don't see people.

I was made redundant during the pandemic and when I got a new job, my employer was based 200 miles away, so I work remotely. Is that ok with you?

Hubblebubble · 10/02/2023 16:06

I was hired as a remote worker after the pandemic. The office is in a different country.

Just shows how much impact covid has had on the way we live.

Children will study this it's fasinating

UsingChangeofName · 10/02/2023 16:14

Because now we have the technology in place, why not ?

My employers have stopped paying the lease on one giant building where thousands used to work and is currently packing up another. So they benefit from no longer renting the buildings (or selling them if they owned them).... no business rates...heating...lighting....wear and tear on everything from flooring to chairs, desks, filing cabinets......toilet paper....Reception staff, security, cleaners.......cleaning products...... some places will also benefit from no longer providing canteens and I believe some workplaces used to provide tea and coffee etc for free. All adds up over a few years.

Just massive savings.

Then happy staff generally = productivity goes up....retention is better....can attract more quality people when they need to recruit...... (including people that don't even live locally)

NooNakedJacuzziness · 10/02/2023 16:18

Because up until 2020 I'd worked outside the home 5 days a week for 31 years and I damn well deserve 2 days per week at home (in my pants)

Crunchymum · 10/02/2023 16:19

Because my employer sold our office.

  • I can book a desk space at the other London office if ever I should want or need to go into the office

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 10/02/2023 13:08

Because I can and my employer lets me.

This, and because I did pre-covid. In fact I've WFH in some way since about 2005 even when it was only one day a week.

smileladiesplease · 10/02/2023 15:19

Dh was an outsourcing consultant for years. Trust me if you can do your job from home then plenty in India and Asia can too. For no benefits and far less money.

That's the global world.

Well they've managed not to outsource me since 2005...

JazzyGeoff · 10/02/2023 16:24

I love the set up I have now.

WFH most of the time, in the office 1, sometimes 2 days a week. But also now, on the days I go in, I log on at home and get the first jobs done, have breakfast etc and then head in after the school run/commuter traffic has gone.

Meetings, F2F, working at desk until about 4pm, head home again before the worst of the traffic. Quick check of emails etc once I'm home.

My employer is more than happy with the hybrid arrangement, put simply if they weren't they wouldn't offer it.

Yes and all the local site visits could be tricky too.

CookieDoughKid · 10/02/2023 16:30

Because my company closed down 20 offices globally and decided not to renew their leases and saved them millions and millions of $$$ but still have a full time work force working harder than ever before.

Wheelz46 · 10/02/2023 16:33

I work from home as do most of my colleagues with the occasional office day. It's not a requirement to be in the office but some of my colleagues prefer not to work from home.

Productivity within my team has most definitely improved and stayed consistent too. My employer made it very clear, if they see a drop in productivity then working from home will not be an option for any individual not meeting the standards.

Dwellingbuyingdilemma · 10/02/2023 16:35

Because I can

hattie43 · 10/02/2023 16:39

I wfh 4 days a week and can't imagine ever going back to the office full time . Why would I when life is so much easier at home and I actually get more done without interruptions

Sloth66 · 10/02/2023 16:43

My employer sold off office space to save money, so no choice now anyway.
I like wfh, no commute, saves times, I can chat to colleagues on zoom if I need to.

scrivette · 10/02/2023 16:45

Our office space has been reduced as my employer has realised that people can be more efficient when WFH. We can go in when we like and there is a minimum amount of time we must spend in the office however there is no longer capacity for all to be in at the same time.

I love WFH, I get far more done and I don't have to commute.

Why would we trust you because your DH used to work in outsourcing? The content of your post indicates that you don't understand what you're talking about.

Lcb123 · 10/02/2023 16:50

It suits me to work 2/3 days from home and 2/3 in office. Benefits and downsides of both but the balance is best for me. I would struggle full time in office after so long with some days at home

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 10/02/2023 16:53

I also think its sad for youngsters. I think on here the demographic is mainly working mothers. Is WFH as good for twenty-somethings? Sitting in their bedrooms in their parents houses. They are completely missing out on the social side of working. The opportunity to meet people and network with people from different departments.

There's always someone who says this, but lots of youngsters, people of all ages actually, were fully or partially excluded from the workplace by the lack of remote opportunities until recently. There are young people who are neurodiverse, disabled, have caring responsibilities, tied to isolated geographical locations. Those twentysomethings are advantaged by more wfh.

The fact that people who could access the social side of working and networking benefitted so much from it also meant that people who couldn't were disadvantaged. That's the other side of the coin.

Ah does he. Well we must all listen to him. Bow down to posters husband!

Execpt I worked in outsourcing. There’s loads of jobs that can be wfh, that can’t be outsourced. My current company couldn’t outsource any of their roles and wouldn’t if they could. Still allow most office staff to wfh.

Lots where companies have outsourced, outside the UK and brought back to the Uk. It’s often a cycle. Outsource, save some money, when it problems get to a certain point, bring it back.

Your dh isn’t the be all and all in outsourcing lol

Shescominghome · 10/02/2023 16:56

I'd love to WFH but I can't find any jobs.

The ones on LinkedIn all have 500+ applicants or whatever and say I'm too far away even though the role is 100% remote.

(I'm in the South West!)

Jealous of everyone WFH. And if anyone knows of any decent recruiters please let me know 🤣 (Marketing, Digital Marketing etc)

Thanks4allthefish · 10/02/2023 16:57

Because I've always worked in a job where we could always of this but managers never liked it - IT

Covid let Pandora out of the box

Allows me to move 500+ miles across the. country to live where I've always wanted to and still earn £££

What's not to like

Thanks4allthefish · 10/02/2023 16:58

Yes, my job COULD be done by someone in India but they don't have the UK soft skills and business experience to do my job to the standard I do.

BiasedBinding · 10/02/2023 17:37

I suppose outsourcing consultants can be outsourced to India and Asia too
