Lighthearted- if you could choose, which month of the year would you have your baby in?

Title speaks for itself.

I know the majority of people don’t have the luxury of choice, but wondered what season of the year would be popular and why.

Eldest birthday is 24th May which is just perfect.. usually nice weather, near half term and bank Holiday, and far away from Christmas!

CampervanKween · 09/02/2023 22:50

I planned my first two so I'd be pregnant through the winter and then give birth before spring so I could have the spring and summer for my maternity leave. They are February births. Then I saw how well kids did if they were older in the class so planned the third for a October birthday. Has seen a teacher friend mess up by having her planned September birth come early and end up being the youngest in the class as late August so gave myself a little leeway that way.

cariadlet · 09/02/2023 22:53

I had a September baby. Not planned (we had been trying for a very long time) but I was really happy because she was the eldest in her year group which really helped her.

She's always had nice weather for her birthday which has been a bonus.

FKATondelayo · 09/02/2023 22:54

April is good if you're using washable nappies - you can hang them on the line through the summer.

Rubbish for birthday parties though as invariably it falls in Easter hols and their mates are away.

Don't try and conceive a baby in April. (Bitter January birthday here)

AliMonkey · 09/02/2023 23:02

I did literally choose for our two (after first pregnancy, where we discovered how easily it happened for us, ended in miscarriage). I was selfish and didn't want to be heavily pregnant in summer as I can't cope with heat, so we went for a late winter baby then wanted to not have two birthdays close together so went for late spring baby. What I hadn't considered was that late winter isn't great for pushing a newborn in a pram in the snow and birthday parties have to be indoors and that late spring means they get to have school exams on their birthday! So there's always good and bad about the timing whenever they are born.

Blablablablaba · 09/02/2023 23:15

I had an April baby and it was the perfect month. I was mainly pregnant in winter months and just as it began to get a bit warmer she arrived. The night feeds weren't so bad as I wasn't sitting in the cold and ark all night. By 4am it was starting to get light and it just made me feel less tiered. Could get out for nice summer walks with baby and returned to work at end of February so the end of next winter.

I also had a late November baby oh man that was so hard with the cold dark night feeds. I just felt exhausted and stuck indoors.

I think late February-May would be my preference but obvs it doesn't all work like that lol.

LulooLemon · 09/02/2023 23:17

August - autumn-born children can get really bored at school, especially when they are mid and late teens.

Some start to switch off mentally because they feel too old to be there.

September-borns are almost 19 when they get their A level results.

IfYoureGonnaBreakMyHeart · 09/02/2023 23:18

Middle of the year because my bestie at school was born on Christmas Eve! I was a June baby so felt like I got the best of both worlds. My babies were born may and august and then my fast caught baby came in February. She always moans that we can't do much outside on her bday

TheYearOfSmallThings · 09/02/2023 23:20

April or May. My birthday is in May and I always loved it. I always felt sorry for the September birthdays, possibly because my friend hated being the oldest in the class.

skippy67 · 09/02/2023 23:37

End of May to mid to late June. Defo not January.

GoT1904 · 09/02/2023 23:39

January just gone. Just because I'm pretty full term now and not having a nice time 😂

airfryerandelectricblanket · 09/02/2023 23:44

July or August.

I've got a friend who has a summer birthday and every year she has a bbq etc. I've got a winter birthday. It's grim!

Mybumlooksbig · 09/02/2023 23:50

June

i was the eldest in the class and i hated it. i would choose a May child as the weather can be nice for their birthdays, and you’re not heavily pregnant when the weather is hot.

Me too. For a start none of your school friends turn 18 before you do so you can’t go out to pubs/clubs. Also nobody is really up for a party once the summer holidays have just finished and you’re all back to school.

Funny, I was a September baby and loved it. Eldest in the class, first to learn to drive, everyone loved a September birthday party to kick off the new school year!

The pubs thing didn't apply because we all had fake ID anyway Grin

Feb / March.

Slap bang in the middle of the school year so none of the oldest or youngest down sides.
Good for sports which are generally calendar year based.
Good for nursery fees as you get the 30 free hours from 1st April.

Exactly. We have both and I highly recommend them.

Oopswediditagain2023 · 10/02/2023 00:01

Early spring, end of feb/March, when the days are getting longer and everything is blossoming in the garden

Hillwalks · 10/02/2023 00:11

Would have liked September birthdays to be oldest in the year. Managed it with one conception, but lost that baby and then had to make do with an April birthday as that's the earliest I could managed to next conceive. Has always taken me months to conceive so I'm just stuck with whatever month fate gives me.

everythingsapickle · 10/02/2023 00:20

Interesting to read everyone’s answers!

if I could have picked, I would have maybe gone with October so old for school year and not too close to Christmas.

I’ve got an April baby. It worked out nicely - lovely to have summer strolling around with a newborn, birthday party in the park, and I would hate to be pregnant in summer. We will just miss the cut off for free nursery hours though... Maybe the end of March would be good?!

whatthejuice · 10/02/2023 00:20

I think Sept and October are great as a decent distance from Christmas and older for the school year.
May is my favourite month anyway. Lovely to have the nicer weather while having a new-born, birthday parties could be outside if wanted and they're not the very youngest in the school year.
I have a Jan birthday and it's not great. Would also avoid July, August and December - but babies come when they come!

Gooseysgirl · 10/02/2023 01:47

Both ours were deliberately timed not to be summer born (I'm a former teacher 👀) one is Nov the other early March. If I could choose... October or April, we weren't too far off 😆

Chanel05 · 10/02/2023 05:58

I think April would be good. Not heavily pregnant over summer or winter either and nights not too cold during feeds.

I have a September born and a December born. Being heaving pregnant in August during a heatwave was torture! I sobbed one day that I'd never been so hot! Being heavily pregnant in December with thick layers and coats was hard work. My son is now 8 weeks old and there's just so much washing that can't be dried on the line!

PigTableManners · 10/02/2023 06:05

May or June because you can have a garden or park party.

As an August born I was 17 when I got my results. Wouldn't chose August as you are the last to turn 16 / 18. You have to work really hard at school (not always a bad thing) ti keep up with everyone else. Also everyone is away for your birthday. This hasn't really changed even as an adult so not just a school thing.

kikisparks · 10/02/2023 06:35

Early June as at older end of school year (in scotland), not the school holidays yet so their friends are all still around for a birthday party, exams usually over, weather usually decent. However my DD was born in October and it’s been pretty good, I love autumn and I liked that she was old enough in summer to sit up and eat but wasn’t moving about too much yet so we had some lovely picnics.
