Have you donated anything to Syria or Turkey

Obviously money. It's so sad seeing them suffer. We did it for Ukraine. Why can't we help Turkey/Syria? A lot of people around me don't really care and it's heartbreaking.

Yes, to the DEC for the government donation matching.
I can't get the photo of the dad holding his daughter's hand as she's crushed dead on her bed out of my head. It's all so desperately sad and I'm so thankful I'm lucky enough to have been born in this country.

I used to donate to the British Red Cross but apparently it offended some people so they changed the name to crescent.... what the heck... take the money when offered and use for the good of all.

Ukraine is fighting an illegal invasion and Syria and Turkey a natural disaster and in both people have died. Both are tragic. Both need help equally.

FFS, the “people offended” were the Ottoman Empire in 1906. The Red Crescent has been around significantly longer than you have been alive to donate.

Ridiculous to boycott the Red Cross because you don’t like the historic parallel existence of a sister organisation.

Weird thread.

Is anyone going to post and say they haven't donated? Confused

It's good to keep this thread visible so it may remind people?

evtheria · 08/02/2023 21:58

Yes, it's not much but I can't do anything else to help those under the rubble, or their loved ones searching above it.

Fair comment. May help if the OP could provide some links of where to donate for people though.

WhiteFire · 08/02/2023 22:07

My dd's primary school is collecting, there will be pupils who have links to the area and have possibly been personally affected.

I haven't. This has reminded me.

faffadoodledo · 08/02/2023 22:12

Links are easily googlable. I researched organisations who are already on the ground - MSF and White Helmets - and also donated to DEC because above a certain level of donation the British government match funds, so the organisations under that umbrella must be fit for purpose.

Donated directly

cecinestpasunepipe · 08/02/2023 22:17

I donated to Islamic Relief Uk. I'm not Muslim but have a tremendous respect for the faith, and I have donated to them before during the terrible flooding in Pakistan.

Been waiting for the DEC appeal to go live so just donated now. Their campaign is joint for both Türkiye and Syria, attracts gift aid and donations are matched by the UK government up to £5 million.

Zephirine · 08/02/2023 22:21

Thanks for reminder. I've made my donation now.

Snugglemonkey · 08/02/2023 22:21

MoneyInTheBananaStand · 08/02/2023 21:16

I have a monthly DD to MSF but I donated again this morning and I gave £100 to the white helmets in Syria.

I've spammed my social media with the DEC appeal as that came out this afternoon - UK government match funding so it's always worth putting a few quid in.

That is why I donate to DEC.

Well, he needs a bit more convincing but he will do it 😬 I can’t stop thinking about some of the stories I’ve read this week 😢

Ach, it would be v sweet, but it is his birthday money. If he doesn't want to do it, it should not be coerced.

Zaliea · 08/02/2023 22:26

No, but I don't donate to anything really unless it's giving away old clothes or toys for charities to sell for funds or to give to those in need. I would if I had more money. I live in a heavily Turkish area of London.

colouringindoors · 08/02/2023 22:30

Yes. Things are shit here... but the situation for many Turkish and Syrian families is horrendous and heartbreaking.

DuesToTheDirt · 08/02/2023 22:32

Yes, I gave some money to ActionAid.

Fantina · 08/02/2023 22:36

Unfortunately I haven’t, I’m in a lot of financial difficulty at the moment and I just can’t afford to. I used to have direct debits to charities but I cancelled them last year when things got too tight for me to continue. I am glad that those who can are donating.

Cocolapew · 08/02/2023 23:08

Yes to the Red Cross, the photo of the man holding his daughters hand just broke me.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 08/02/2023 23:11

Thank you for prompting me, had been meaning to but hectic few days, have done now to red cross.

Zandra123 · 09/02/2023 00:56

Thanks for all the suggestions, donations made to white helmets and Doctors Without Borders

DesertRose64 · 09/02/2023 00:58

Did you ever watch the documentary about the White Helmets?

DesertRose64 · 09/02/2023 01:08

We have. But we’re not UK based and Syria is very much part of our awareness any day of the week.

We’ve emptied cupboards of excess clothing, gathered all of our excess camping equipment from the entire family, sent money with a Syrian friend who is going home on holiday this week and we’ll also drop things off at the Syrian Embassy who’ve posted a list of things they require. Will also donate to the White Helmets, thank you for the link, I first became aware of them during the war when there was a documentary on TV about them and it’s stayed with me. Will have a look at MSF also, a few years ago I saw one of their teams transmitting through our airport on the way back from a disaster zone and they looked exhausted. I think they’d had to leave somewhere in a hurry and they all needed a bath, clean clothes and a good sleep. It wasn’t like we see on tv, it wasn’t glamorous, it was hard hitting and very real. In fact I still think about one of the team in particular he made such an impression on me that day.
