How to treat dry skin (from cold weather) all around 8yo’s mouth

Any tips? 8yo has dry skin all around is mouth from the cold weather - especially playing sports in the cold! Not sure what’s best to treat it, and he’s getting upset because the little shits his friends at school have apparently been making fun.

vaseline on at night (after gently cleaning with warm water)

again in the morning (very thinly so it's not visible).

a chapstick he can apply himself after lunch.

Lansinoh (the breastfeeding stuff but you can get a lip balm version too - same stuff, smaller tube). It sorts it so quickly.

SaltyGod · 08/02/2023 18:41

I second Vaseline. We do it when the little angels are asleep as they don't tolerate it when awake

Mine has this. He licks it which makes it worse. I wait until he’s asleep and smother him in Blisteze, the really strong stuff in a metal tube. 8 Hour Cream also good overnight.

Have spent a small fortune on other lip balms for the day, all of which he hates except Palmers Cocoa Butter one.

This is going to sound very random, but I use nipple cream on my girls! It's the lanolin stuff in a purple tube that you use for dry, cracked nipples when breastfeeding. It is super-intensively moisturising, a good barrier cream and is suitable for even newborns to digest so no issues putting it around a sore mouth. It's very thick though so I tend to only use it at night and then use Vaseline during the day. It works wonders.

Thanks! Will get some Vaseline on it as I actually have that in the house. Will try the others if that doesn’t work.

Vaseline at bedtime every night.

Oneborneverydecade · 08/02/2023 19:09

I use sudocrem

Surely vaseline creates a barrier but isn't moisturising so won't help the skin heal?

CalistoNoSolo · 08/02/2023 19:37

Shea butter. Vaseline is dreadful stuff.

greenacrylicpaint · 08/02/2023 20:23

sudocreme smells and tastes awful. I wouldn't put it near my nose or mouth.

Cuppasoupmonster · 08/02/2023 20:25

Yep, Lasinoh! I use it on the cracks around my mouth and DD’s, amazing stuff. Otherwise Weleda baby face balm is pretty good, I use that on her cheeks.

TheUsualChaos · 08/02/2023 20:26

Yes Vaseline will work well..also make sure he definitely isn't licking around his lips as DS was doing this making it sore but vaseline helped it heal very quickly.

DreamingofNuneaton · 08/02/2023 20:27

A lipbalm with beeswax in

Yes I put it on when she’s asleep so she can’t lick or rub it in a hurry and it has some time to sink in.

creamegglover · 08/02/2023 20:35

i use olive oil - works a treat!

chocciebiscuits · 08/02/2023 20:38

The pharmacist told me coconut oil was really good when my daughter had this. Slather it on at night and when they're off to school in the morning Smile

TheCatsMakethTheHome · 08/02/2023 20:40

Savlon cream was the only thing that helped my daughter when she had this on several occasions.

Mol1628 · 08/02/2023 20:47

Carmex! The original one in the little pot. It’ll clear it up really quickly if used overnight.

Rainingcatsandmice · 08/02/2023 20:48

Carmex!

There's a Norwegian brand called Waleda which you can get in the U.K. and they do a cream called skin food. We live in a very cold climate and my DS suffers badly from dry skin around his mouth and nose. Put this cream on every morning and night and it will fix the issue rapidly

I came here to say Weleda Skin Food, it is amazing, there's a light one, that's not the one you want, you want the full fat version!

champagneplanet · 08/02/2023 21:03

Blistex intensive moisturiser, £2 I think on Amazon, but you can get it anywhere. Worked a treat on DDs dry skin round her mouth last winter, she kept licking her lips and they were very sore.

Blistex Intensive Moisturiser Lip Balm with SPF 10 Hydrating and Nourishing Lip Moisturiser, 5g amzn.eu/d/dxbh6L3

Itisbetter · 08/02/2023 21:04

Coconut oil

Madamecastafiore · 08/02/2023 21:06

Weleda do a cream for babies for this issue and I use it on my 9 year old as they lick their lips constantly and the skin around them gets sore. I think it's in a yellow tube.

Fifi00 · 08/02/2023 21:06

Doublebase you get it from the chemist my DD has eczema on her mouth it cleared it in a day.
