If it’s anything like the rest of my ‘too good to go’ I’ll pass.

Almost every time I’ve used it the food has been awful, inedible or hardly anything in the bags, not even slightly on the turn but well past it, taking trips at rush hour or worse at 10pm to collect, it’s such a shame but I’m afraid in the Lancashire area it’s just not great.

Trying to keep my weekly shop down and use it but continuous disappointment and even let down on the day; Greggs are the worst for this- I get a ping 30 minutes before collection “sorry we didn’t have enough to give to you, you’ll receive a refund within 3-5 working days so I end up spending double and trip to Tesco for tea and hope there’s marked down food and out of pocket until refund comes in.

We get magic bags occasionally and they have been brilliant. I am really pleased Aldi is getting on the list. They'll be popular around here.

OhmygodDont · 08/02/2023 13:06

You need to be careful with toogood. Also make sure you report bad boxes like say a box of 12 packs of rolls they are not meant to do it like that.

I find Greg’s is ok, spar always cancel, one Morrisons cancelled, I’m trying a different Morrisons tonight. Aldi I’ve found pretty good.

But I’m not relying on these boxes to make meals really more like a food lottery for the fun of it.

Gosh, I didnt know that. I thought it would be ok but I can see its not.

Last last aldi box had
apples, lemons, cheese, two curry style ready meals, a load of toaster bread, a loaf of honey seeded brown bloomer, plums, a pepper, bag of potatoes, bread and butter pudding, corn beef, donuts and carrots.

SpeckledlyHen · 08/02/2023 13:11

I got one of these from Morrisons recently. Massively underwhelmed and I wish I had just left it with them instead of throwing the contents in my own bin. It was £3.09 and the items in it totaled £2.76 - and it was all bread. Not quite magic and not quite worth £10 originally..

MadamLeota · 08/02/2023 13:11

DH is obsessed with these, much like @OhmygodDont says, a 'food lottery'.
Mostly really good experiences.
We have a local pie chain and their bags are always brilliant, full of cakes and pies.
The whole bag will always be used.

Morrisons was ok for us, a huge amount of avocados which DS took home with him, plus enough veg for a decent stew and a sandwich for lunch the following day.

The strangest experience was one of those little pop up churros huts in the shopping centre. When DH got there they cooked him enough fresh to fill the magic bag. I'd assumed it would be daily leftovers so unsure if its the dough they cant reuse. Either way, a huge bag of churros and chocolate sauce went down rather nicely!

RoseBucket · 08/02/2023 13:11

I’ve been using this App for a long time, over 40 bags ‘saved’ just from my experience, in my area Costa, Greggs and Waitrose (shell garage) are the only ones worth it. Morrisons are not good.

I only use the Costa and Greggs if my daughter is back from Uni because she eats so much when back for a day or two.

The Waitrose ones are very good!

You should have reported that bag toogood would have refunded you as it’s not to just get rid of their rubbish it’s meant to be varied.

Deathbyfluffy · 08/02/2023 13:15

As with anything that's a lottery, YMMV - it's all pot luck.
I tried Aldi for the first time on Monday and it was quite poor, but then last night's haul was incredible!

SantaBakula · 08/02/2023 13:26

I have had mixed luck with magic bags too, I got one from James Martin kitchen in a train station last week.
I have never shopped there before but was coming through the station at the right time do I thought I'd give it a go .
I can't belive how expensive the sandwiches are there! 7.90 for a brie baguette. I got 3 baguettes and a muffin for £4 so in theory it was good value but the bread was dry and one was hard , no where enough filling . The muffin was ok

I have got a aldi very close yo my home and one near work so I will keep my eye open for them.

MadamLeota · 08/02/2023 13:29

I'm intrigued to try a Toby Carvery one, but they are always quite late on and I'm in my PJs by then 😂

clary · 08/02/2023 13:32

@Idontknownemore if you are messaged about a cancelled gtg bag less than 2 hours before, please complain. I have had this happen and they have given me a £4 gtg voucher. I once had a Costa one cancelled as I was queuing to get it!

Had a great Greggs one the other week, two big baguettes, two iced fruity buns and four caramel custard doughnuts. Not bad for £2.59. I agree they can be variable tho. Will add Aldi to my favs.

I think cheaper shops are better overall - a Starbucks one near me is £5, value £15, but that can be just three sandwiches and not always nice ones - better just to buy full price at Morrisons. Costa usually good, sometimes excellent. Yes agree Waitrose in the Shell garage near me is usually good as well.

I’ve not tried their dinner but I have grabbed a breakfast one. Sadly they covered the whole thing with beans and tomatoes rather than separate or option so it went in the bin.

I would presume the dinners will be much the same but with everything and soaked in gravy. Which is fine I like gravy. Not beans though.

CocoonofDavid · 08/02/2023 14:02

I used them a fair bit when our local bakery started doing them… but the last two bags were pretty naff, the last one I bought felt such bad value- a sour dough round loaf (I think the RRP on that was over a fiver), and a very dry/not at all nice piece of Lemmon cake (Rrp over £4), and something I can’t remember… but I remember being hugely disappointed as previously they had various things to be shared out amongst 3 DC plus two adults.

Previously, the standard bag was 4 croissants, 4 doughnuts, a loaf of bread, and then something from the hot counter often two, plus a sticky bun/cake or similar.

I wonder whether it’s got so popular/well known that they are spreading things thinly at the expense of more bags.

onwardandupwards · 08/02/2023 14:20

We get toby carvery ones, absolutely loads, everytime we have had one the gravy is in a separate pot and yorkshires are wrapped separately as well. last week we got 2 and we got roast meats, 15ish roast potatoes, lots of veg, some pasta bits, masses of stuffing, three Yorkshires, tub of mash and 2 pots of gravy. Was really nice.

FannyFifer · 08/02/2023 14:45

The Greg's one always has loads of stuff, Starbucks one usually decent amount but not always things we liked.
M&S was weird things like crab sticks and a salmon mousse thing & manky salad.
Mot ordered from it in a while.

NerrSnerr · 08/02/2023 14:54

We use Too Good to Go about 4-5 times a week. We usually get bags from the local co-op. We tend to get things like vegetables, ready meals, cakes and the picnic stuff like olives, hummus, potato salad etc. My husband and I have some random meals but it works for us.

We sometimes get Greggs or other bakery bags as a treat but that's rare or we'd live off cake!!

Thank you for the tip, I downloaded the app today after receiving an email from Aldi and I’m also in Lancashire. I don’t drive and have a fussy DP so probably best I don’t put any effort into it 😆

burnoutbabe · 08/02/2023 14:59

i may try the local one but i am picky about which places i use near me

local costa - for me always 4 items - 2 sarnies/2 cakes - good value
local greggs - 7 items - cakes and sarnies - lovely
new Sushi place = got around £27 worth for £5 first time - good mix of fish and veggie options so both me and partner happy.

But
Morrisons - MILLIONS of LEMONS in my box and lettuce.
some local bakeries - 6 plain croissants, dry. no variety

so shall see what scores my local aldi gets. just makiing me throw away a ton of veg on the turn does no one anygood!

MadamLeota · 08/02/2023 15:04

Thanks @onwardandupwards and @OhmygodDont I might give it a go. I do rather love beans though so breakfast is good for me!
I did forget the Costa one I had once, it was oneDH brought home and had a couple of sandwiches but loads of the rocky road style cake. It weighed a tonne!

I had thirteen types of stale bread from them - nothing else! Chucked it all so saved them a job I suppose...

RoseBucket · 08/02/2023 22:00

Look at the ratings. I tend to only order for those rated 4.4 or higher.

Yoloohno · 08/02/2023 22:12

We had a magic bag for tea from the local chippy and it was impressive, tea for £4 with enough food for 5, 2 pies, 2 fish cakes and a sausage with a mountain of chips.

But that was a good one, we’ve had some that have only been fit for the bin or food that wouldn’t be our choice to eat.

I wouldn’t touch our Aldi with a bargepole, it’s poor at full price.

Hedonism · 08/02/2023 22:24

We had an amazing one from Morrisons recently. Loads of sandwiches, cake, and even crisps, and then they asked if we wanted a rotisserie chicken too! The next one was mainly bananas and lettuce. It's all a bit hit and miss.
