Do you drink water from a hotel bathroom tap?

Just wondering. Travelling for work with a couple of colleagues & one asked why I bought a large bottle of water for my room. Staying in a small independent hotel & I have no idea if it’s mains or tank fed, & I drink loads of water so I need a source!

No definitely not in a hotel- or any tap which isn't drawn directly from the mains. I wouldn't even drink from the tap in our upstairs bathroom for the same reason as that water comes from the tank in the attic.

GoAgainstNicki · 07/02/2023 22:58

No because I wouldn’t even drink out of the bathroom tap at my own house. Saying that though, I don’t drink tap water from my kitchen sink so my opinion is probably irrelevant haha

But Why?? What do you drink? Bottled water??

justasking111 · 07/02/2023 23:00

Hotel I worked in four star 100 rooms. You don't want to know what maintenance fished out regularly from the tanks.

At home Welsh water. When we have city visitors they drink gallons of it.

whizzpopping · 07/02/2023 23:00

No but only because it's never sufficiently cold.

GoldilockMom · 07/02/2023 23:01

No. Not since that woman was fished out of the cold water tank in a hotel.

Yuk!

Yeah I only ever drink bottled water. I don’t like the taste of tap water and it tends to hurt my throat for some reason. I haven’t drank from a tap since I was like 16 or something

35andThriving · 07/02/2023 23:04

Yes, it has never occurred to me not to either.

SpangoDweller · 07/02/2023 23:04

Wow @GoAgainstNicki i can’t imagine that. My tap water at home is terrific and bottled water tastes bland and weird in comparison, unless it’s ice cold. Which the bottle in my room isn’t any more 😬

No.
I boil the kettle and allow the water to cool if I don't have any bottled water.

You wouldn't if you knew what people do in the hotel kettles!! You'd be better off just drinking the tap water.

@SpangoDweller nope!! Bottled water all the way!

Hercisback · 07/02/2023 23:10

There are people that never drink from a tap Shock

TheTeenageYears · 07/02/2023 23:11

Shouldn't there be a sign if it's not suitable for drinking? In any 'home' like environment I would assume the bathroom isn't mains fed so wouldn't drink it but in a hotel if there wasn't a sign I would drink it.

LateOnTheBandwagon · 07/02/2023 23:14

If in UK cold taps in public places have to be marked as unsuitable for drinking if fed from the tank. Pretty sure I have never seen that in a hotel though except over a bath tap.

EasilyDirected · 07/02/2023 23:18

Yes, I assume there would be a sign if it was from a tank. At home we do have a cold water tank but when we had the bathroom redone we had the basin tap connected to the mains for this reason so its only the bath tap you can't drink out of now.

We live in a really hard water area and I love the taste of our tap water, when we go to places with soft water it tastes of nothing and doesn't quench my thirst in the same way, I don't like it.

@Hercisback Yep, me. The water where I live (SE England) is horrible. I've tried all kinds of filters/jugs etc but none of them make it drinkable. It's heavy & horrid.

Highland Spring Water all the way. I'm trying their box of water this week, so I'll see how that goes.

Rosecottage888 · 07/02/2023 23:20

Never! I don't trust the maintenance. First thing I do when I get to a hotel is run the taps for a while even for using in a kettle or brushing teeth.

YesILikeItToo · 07/02/2023 22:29

No, because it is not a kitchen tap. I do not drink water from my bathroom taps at home for the same ‘reason’. I’m not sure if the reason is a sound one? Is it about a difference between ‘mains’ and ‘tank’?

Bathroom tap water used to come from a tank and you probably grew up being told you couldn’t drink from it but most tap water despite where it’s coming from comes straight from the main now so it’s all the same and safe to drink ☺️

Insideallday · 08/02/2023 00:18

No

Witsendwilly · 08/02/2023 00:35

Wow. There are people who run taps in hotels and stress about the kettle?

Anyway. If it was fed from a tank it would say so, and in this day and age even if it was from a tank the tank would be covered.

It’s not 1962 anymore.

“If there’s no sign, it’s fine”. - copyright me. Ten seconds ago.

I couldn’t live my life even thinking about what water I could and couldn’t drink, nor live with someone who was.

Jellybean23 · 07/02/2023 22:22

Whenever we stay in hotels, we drink the water from the washbasin cold tap. Surely it is mains water, just like at home? And wouldn't it be labelled as not fit for drinking otherwise?

Exactly

notangelinajolie · 08/02/2023 00:48

No never.
Not since I filled the kettle to make tea.
I noticed a black fleck floating in my mug and thought it may have come from the kettle. The kettle was clean.
So I ran the cold tap at full blast and sure enough several other similar black flecks appeared and disappeared down the plug hole.
I don’t even brush my teeth in hotel tap water anymore.

mondaytosunday · 08/02/2023 01:36

What country? I wouldn't in some, but UK yes. It would say if the water wasn't potable.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 08/02/2023 02:00

I wouldn't. I can't drink bathroom water.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 08/02/2023 02:01

WandaWonder · 07/02/2023 22:32

What is the difference in bathroom or kitchen tap water?

Bathroom water could have dead pigeons in it Confused

Tap water where I live in SW London taste disgusting. You genuinely would not want to drink it. Bottled water always tastes so refreshing, it’s the only thing I drink.

I also don’t like water from a water fountain or even a water cooler so maybe I’m just odd. But yeah I never drink from a kitchen tap and definitely not a bathroom tap

I checked into a hotel with DD earlier today. My favourite thing about it is a fridge, empty except for two glass bottles of water which can be refilled, both still and sparkling, from a “water station” on each floor. All hotels should have this.
