Need opinions please...... Is £35 per child totally approx £1000+ for a class leaving party a bit excessive? Dont hurl abuse at me though....for the moment I am numbed to an opinion.

Do you mean like a year 6 big leavers do?

Ijustdunnoanymore · 07/02/2023 11:51

yes its for a year 6 class

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/02/2023 11:53

Way too much!

It depends what the party will be like. If it’s to cover external venue hire, catering and entertainment it seems typical.

Ridingfree · 07/02/2023 11:53

Depends on how affluent the area is, I'd hope all can feel they can attend, add leaver hoody's etc on and teacher gifts and it could get expensive. £20-£25 would be preferable

MrsBunnyEars · 07/02/2023 11:53

Do you mean parents would be asked to pay that?

I wouldn’t ask MN, I’d think about the families of your particular cohort. If some will struggle to pay, it’s too much.

Dragonsandcats · 07/02/2023 11:55

We paid that sort of money but it included hoody, gifts, party

Coffeellama · 07/02/2023 11:56

Yep too expensive, and I’m assuming it’s a year 6 leavers not a birthday party?

Paturday · 07/02/2023 11:56

Oh right I thought you were going to spend that on a birthday party 😄

id be happy to pay £35 for my child for a leaving do but others in their cohort wouldn’t be able to.

Jules912 · 07/02/2023 11:57

Just for the party? That seems a bit much, we paid similar for party, hoody and teacher gifts.

MelchiorsMistress · 07/02/2023 11:58

What’s included in the £35? I think it’s fine for a special occasion end of primary school party.

Findyourneutralspace · 07/02/2023 11:58

Too many variables here - is it a Y6 leaving do? Who will be paying?
I wouldn’t pay £1000 to host a reception child’s birthday party but I’d have paid £35 for DS to attend his leaving do if it was something a bit special.

autienotnaughty · 07/02/2023 12:01

It depends where you live/economic situation. To some people it's doable. It seems a lot to me but depends what you get for the money

runwithme · 07/02/2023 12:03

I guess it depends what's included. Here, the PTA contribute, as they have done for years. The kids also fundraise, so could they do that? Open a tuck shop, do a cake sale, that kind of thing?

Ijustdunnoanymore · 07/02/2023 12:04

Its going to be all singing and dancing apparently.... I think the ideas are all well intentioned I am just not sure if its excessive or not. It doesnt include hoodies I think they are extra.

Are you the OP? Why the name change?

eatdrinkandbemerry · 07/02/2023 14:23

It would be fine by me but I know other parents wouldn't pay it.

Notjustabrunette · 07/02/2023 14:27

I would pay it as it’s a one off. But I’m guessing there would be some families where that would be a lot.

emmathedilemma · 07/02/2023 14:31

To put it into context, for less than that amount we had a 3 course sit down meal, glass of fizz on arrival and use of a bar / disco all evening at our office Xmas party. i think it's a lot to ask parents to pay (unless you're in a particularly affluent area or at a private school) and a lot to spend on kids of that age group.

gogohmm · 07/02/2023 14:36

£35 is ridiculous for year 6. DD's year 13 prom was £35 including a Prosecco reception, sit down meal, band and dj until 2am

Pinkypurplecloud · 07/02/2023 14:36

As in for each child to pay as the equivalent of a “prom”? (If it’s you throwing the whole bash at that price you’re insane.) It’s reasonable in the sense that for a venue, food, entertainment etc that’s what I’d expect it to cost, but I wouldn’t want to pay it - we could afford it, I just think it’s a waste. Lots of families at my children’s school can’t buy food at the moment (they’re having to hand out food parcels), £35 might as well be £350 to them and holding an event some kids couldn’t come to would seem to defeat the object of the exercise.

Our Y6s have a picnic lunch on the school field after leavers assembly with some music and games. If it’s warm they have a water fight. They have fun, families pay for the food on a voluntary donations basis (any shortage is covered by the PTA) and it’s a nice but not extravagant event. They’re leaving primary school, not graduating from university.

gogohmm · 07/02/2023 14:41

My DD's year 6 leavers party was a bbq run by the pta, a dj (head teachers 16 year old son) and tuck shop with bright fizzy drinks and penny sweets (huge treat for those whose parents are strict with these things!) It was £2.50 for a ticket which included a hot dog or burger and one small cup of pop. Extra 10p per cup of pop, 20p for popcorn etc. free school meal kids and those whose parents came forward weren't charged (I was on pta and chaperoned each year because I'm dbs to work with kids already). This is reasonable!

skgnome · 07/02/2023 14:42

2 questions;
what’s included?
what kind of school are we talking about?

private school in an affluent area, private venue, food included, professional photography (pic included, digital downloads) and some sort of entertainment - on the expensive side, but as a one off most parents will just pay - still a bit too much

local school where there’s a mix of families, too much!

arethereanyleftatall · 07/02/2023 14:45

If memory serves, dds y6 leaving party was £50 per child. It was awesome - they hired photo booths, silent disco, so many sweets etc, hot dogs. Kids had a blast and it was money well spent.

arethereanyleftatall · 07/02/2023 14:51

With ours I contacted the pta and told them that if anyone couldn't pay, that I would pay, anonymously, for them. They messaged me back to say don't worry, the pta were planning on covering that if it happened. All the y6s were there, so I was pleased about that.
