Going up the stairs on all fours: am I the only one?

This is a bit of a weird one.

When I was a kid, say 6/7/8, I'd always scamper up steepish flights of stairs on all fours.

Now I'm in my fifties I've suddenly started doing it again on my home stairs (not in public, although that's a hilarious image). Stairs are steepish, but no steeper than they've been for the last ten years I've been living here, and have got newish nice soft carpet. It suddenly seems like the natural thing to do if my hands are empty.

Does anyone else do this? Should I contact the HRT manufacturers to report a strange side-effect? Is it the sign of a hitherto unsuspected neurological condition?

Oh my gosh yes! I look like some kind if deranged monkey but it feels so natural!!

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 05/02/2023 18:10

If you're really knackered and you do it slowly it's definitely less effort than walking up conventionally. If you do it at a decent lick then it's more fun.

I do this too, mostly when I’m tired, sometimes as play with the dog.

DH still runs up the stairs making race car noises.

We are 51 and 54 😁

I did this randomly once and my dc were looking at me like wtf. They do it but they just had never seen me do it 😂 I do it occasionally, it’s fast and makes me feel silly for a couple of seconds.

I was born and brought up in a bungalow. My Granny lived in a bungalow. The primary school I went to was all on 1 level. So the first time I came across stairs on a regular basis was age 11 at secondary school. I had to go up with hands and feet. All my classmates thought it was hysterical!

That must have been really hard.

I have never learned to ride a bike, wish I had.

HumphreysCorner · 05/02/2023 19:53

Oh yes, I do, so much quicker x

Quicker than running?

Lucylock · 05/02/2023 20:28

I do this all the time at home. If just feels 'right' and how it should be done. My teen DS laughs at me.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 05/02/2023 21:40

@Paq not for me, it's just fun

MadisonAvenue · 05/02/2023 22:13

It’s not something I do but I’m definitely going to try it!

DarcyProudman · 05/02/2023 22:52

I do this a lot. I also like to lie under my bed when I’m home alone, especially if there’s a sunbeam shining on it. I’m 60 and have always done both!

RampantIvy · 05/02/2023 22:59

No. I usually run up the stairs.
I'm 64.

Oh I missed the previous thread, despite trying a quick search.

That's quite cheering. I have visions of loads of middle-aged women happily embracing their inner gorilla/toddler.

Here also 🤚

Living my best life ❤️ (Sorry I’m not on FB so don’t ever get to say that sarcastically 😂)

DidyouNO · 05/02/2023 23:09

I do it from our first floor, up to the second. Those stairs are steeper and it's less tiring that way 😂

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/02/2023 13:31

I don't do that going upstairs but coming back down I go down a step, bring the following foot down to the same step and then put the leading foot down onto the next step, bring the following foot down to meet it. And repeat until I'm at the bottom. (I don't do it anywhere else).
I can't decide if I'm getting old or if it's a fear of breaking my leg again (I didn't break it falling on stairs, but on the kitchen floor) a year ago and was reliant on crutches for a ling time.

I do this because I have dodgy knees. I have been told it's your brain trying to protect you from pain, you don't do it in public because you know it looks odd.

Less fun than scampering, that's for sure.

Lopoem · 11/02/2023 22:39

I am 42 and can't imagine this would be an easy way to get up the stairs. Mind you, I never crawled as a baby (bum shuffler), so maybe crawling isn't my natural gate 😂. I do however sometimes bum shuffle down the stairs with my 4 year old in my lap. Lots of giggles every time we drop down a stair.

I have been on MN for about 15 years and this has come up several times. It’s obviously a thing! I don’t do it myself but I think it’s great and funny that other people do.

I am 60. If there are strong looking bannisters I like holding on and jumping the last few stairs on a staircase. Sometimes I keep doing more and more stairs until I lose my nerve.

I like to swing off at the bottom last few steps.

I forgot, and did this at work not too long ago.

After a meeting. 46 year old, Senior government tax lawyer.

Luckily my colleagues all know my "grown up act", really is just pretend. 😁

Teatime55 · 11/02/2023 22:56

Yes I do this. But I’ll do it a few times and then not again for months.
will do it tonight obviously

You are a senior lawyer who in front of work colleagues got down on all fours to climb some stairs ?

MonkeyMindAllOverAround · 11/02/2023 23:06

I do too, it just feels good! (Yes, I can stand straight when there are other people around)

BillyNighysWife · 12/02/2023 05:06

@Stuffynosetime I think @ThatsAboutEnoughOfThat meant that she jumped the last few stairs recently while at work, not that she crawled up the stairs on all fours.

ThatsAboutEnoughOfThat · 12/02/2023 21:19

Yes, last couple of steps at the bottom. I grabbed the bannisters on either side and swung and jumped like a little kid.

I don't do the monkey crawl up. Never tried that at work or at home. Might give it a go now. 😁

ElliF · 12/02/2023 21:22

I used to do this too.

.

When I was two.
But I have noticed this behaviour in my cat, who’s also now two.
I don’t think she’ll grow out of it though.
