Going up the stairs on all fours: am I the only one?

This is a bit of a weird one.

When I was a kid, say 6/7/8, I'd always scamper up steepish flights of stairs on all fours.

Now I'm in my fifties I've suddenly started doing it again on my home stairs (not in public, although that's a hilarious image). Stairs are steepish, but no steeper than they've been for the last ten years I've been living here, and have got newish nice soft carpet. It suddenly seems like the natural thing to do if my hands are empty.

Does anyone else do this? Should I contact the HRT manufacturers to report a strange side-effect? Is it the sign of a hitherto unsuspected neurological condition?

I haven’t done this for YEARS and now I’m excited to try it when I’m next in a house with stairs

katepilar · 05/02/2023 16:54

I do that too. Or rather used to do that in my 20s-30s when I lived in houses with those kind of stairs.

Sasha07 · 05/02/2023 16:56

Ok, I'm so glad I read this thread, what a miserable day I've had but knowing there's others who are still playful and young at heart has made my day! My dh and teenage DS have just had turns bum shuffling and then crocodiling down, I didn't mention the monkey climb back up but they both did it!! Remember, don't grow up! It's a trap!

noimaginationforausername · 05/02/2023 17:01

Omg I've found my people! I've been doing this since last year, no idea why I started but it's fun! My 8 year old thinks it's hilarious!!

Oldnproud · 05/02/2023 17:09

Yes, I do this quite often, even though I still have strong legs/knees

We have seriously steep stairs in our house, with small treads, which are all too easy to fall on.

My natural speed for any movement is 'fast', and I've found that going up our stairs on all fours is both faster and safer than staying upright and relying on the bannister rail.

Admittedly, it does look very funny to anyone below, as I discovered quite recently when I followed my 90 Yr old mum upstairs and saw her doing it.

AngryLemon · 05/02/2023 17:17

Sometimes I like to hop upstairs, like a rabbit. I'm 42.

And this sounds different than what others are saying. Safer on all fours?

so confused rn. I have no stairs and I'm not using the communal ones in my block to try it!

I do this, the stairs in my terraced house are almost as steep as a ladder and it just seemed a natural way to go upstairs. I wasn't copying the cat, honest.

Oh I missed the previous thread, despite trying a quick search.

That's quite cheering. I have visions of loads of middle-aged women happily embracing their inner gorilla/toddler.

I do it too. I have always done it.

EmmaEmerald · 05/02/2023 17:38

Are people scampering up fast like this guy?

bumpytrumpy · 05/02/2023 17:41

I do this and my kids think it's hilarious

soboredtonight · 05/02/2023 17:42

I do this lol.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/02/2023 17:44

I do this. I have an ultra creepy crawl that I use to scare the DC.Grin

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/02/2023 17:44

I do this but backwards coming down the stairs 🤣

LimeTreeGrove · 05/02/2023 17:48

I started this in my 50s

EmmaEmerald · 05/02/2023 17:51

Like a vertical version of this?

www.lesmills.com/uk/fit-planet/fitness/bear-crawls/

Man, I'm unfit.

Mimilamore · 05/02/2023 17:53

My husband does this, mind you he is 76 with a heart condition, finds it easier..,

SophiaLarsen · 05/02/2023 17:56

Me too. And I also do a forward roll across the bed instead of going round it. I am 45.

Right
I can't figure out who is doing it for extra support or if most posters are doing it at a cracking pace because they are super fit, hence all the questions.

OldTinHat · 05/02/2023 17:57

I live in a 200yr old cottage and the stairs are so narrow and steep - I always climb up on all fours! In fact, a neighbour popped round last year to have a nose and she went up on all fours too.

Yes, that is me !

VioletCharlotte · 05/02/2023 18:00

I always did this as a child. On occasion as, I even came down head first on all fours (to the horror of my DM!)

I don't seem to be able to walk normally down the stairs. DS says I gallop, like Miranda 🤣

EmmaEmerald · 05/02/2023 18:02

SirVixofVixHall · 05/02/2023 17:59

Yes, that is me !

That is really good cardio! i'm impressed. And wishing I had stairs!

SunsetStrip · 05/02/2023 18:03

I've always done it. When we first married we bought s house with stairs straight off the living room and I thought I'd stop so I didn't look foolish in front of my dh, it didn't last long. Now all 5 of us do it.

watchingpullimgepisode6 · 05/02/2023 18:04

I do this too. I hate when DH is coming up too so I have to walk normally
