I didn't know he'd put his name to a range of pizza. That's put me off him a bit, I don't know why.

I love his lyrics. His constant self-deprecation is a bit irritating after a while, particularly as everyone knows his current girlfriend is absolutely stunning.

JadeSeahorse · 16/04/2023 16:07

Fab guy!

Just seems so approachable and normal for such a big star.

I didn't really know much about him until I watched the Netflix documentary, and like everyone else I am now an utter fan (not so much over the music, though, but I can appreciate his talent).
My main takeaway from the documentary, though, was the unimaginable pressure the music industry place on artists. it was good to see him being 'allowed' to take a break, but, as he says, the pressure of everyone who's riding on his coattails must be immense. I really hope he manages to remain healthy throughout it all.

Same. I watched the documentary thinking I'd heard his name but not his music, and I knew he lived near me (turned out I vaguely recognised some of his songs).

But I found the way the music industry and its people just completely take over and destroys a person, even when it's clear the person is deteriorating in front of their eyes, so awful to watch.

Even harder to watch was that scene in LA where he was sitting in that restaurant/bar with those Americans and you could see how unconfirmed and disconnected he was from everything.

Also how vacuous and ungenuine most of the record label people (UK too) are, talking robotics on clichés etc was also telling.

We only had a low level awareness of him until we (me & DH) saw the Netflix documentary on Monday, now we're massive fans!

PickleOfAConundrum · 16/04/2023 16:26

Lewis Capaldi is absolutely amazing! And yes you spelt his name right OP 😀. From the first time I heard him I literally fell in love, not with him personally, his voice! His song "Someone To Love" reminded me so much of my darling Dad who I sadly lost to cancer and I cry every time I hear it. He's a new song out that he sings about his struggles in life and his anxiety. He's just such a sweetheart who has a voice that just melts me! I'd love to go see him in concert when he's next over!

daretodenim · 16/04/2023 16:58

Another one here who had heard his band and heard his songs but hadn't really paid attention. Then I watched the Netflix documentary. I enjoyed seeing how creative he naturally is, how he's able to channel his massive emotions into beautiful words. I actually wondered if in some ways he'd have been more comfortable as a poet. About then he talked about how great it feels going on stage and singing. So I guess not!

He's both incredibly secure and confident and absolutely riddled with self-doubt and vulnerable at the same time.

The sobs of his mother off camera absolutely broke my heart. My god. You never hear that sort of crying on TV because it can't be acted.

His parents seem like stellar people - his health clearly is a priority to them. While that's how it should be, it's also not always the way in showbiz.

Anyway I downloaded his albums after the documentary. The music itself isn't my favourite type, but I love good words and boy does he write them. I'd definitely go to see him in concert if I had the chance.

I hope he's able to stay himself and not feel too pressured by the industry. He's obviously got a MASSIVE number of fans who really love him as he is (plus one here now), so I hope that forms a barrier to the record label being too dickish: it's in their financial interests to let him be exactly who he is.

People love funny plain blokes who take the piss out of themselves.

(funny plain women are only widely accepted once they're over 50)

This. A woman equivalent wouldn’t get the same treatment.

GeriKellmansUpdo · 16/04/2023 17:08

I like his rough, gritty voice. Also seems very down to earth.

But I also agree with this. I can't remember the last plain woman I saw in the music industry. Seens unacceptable for women.

I8toys · 16/04/2023 17:09

I don't love his music but I love him as a person. He's funny, self deprecating and in a world obsessed with perfection he's a breath of fresh air. I just hope he has time to relax and enjoy his fame/free time. The pressure on him must be immense.

whirlyswirly · 16/04/2023 18:14

There's clearly a lot of love for him on here but I obviously need to watch the documentary as although he has a great voice, I just find him really crass. Im not into sappy music either.

I listened to a radio interview which made me cringe - I didn't realise he had Tourette's and that's possibly why some things just sounded really inappropriate. (Belching live on air and talking about using internet porn the night before).

Niftythrifter · 16/04/2023 18:20

I don’t know much about him but I enjoyed the Netflix doc on him.

Jewel1968 · 16/04/2023 19:03

@whirlyswirly I think the documentary will explain some of his 'crass' behaviour.
I agree with those that say the music industry (perhaps the entertainment industry) seems to chew people up. I must be hard.

PollyAmour · 16/04/2023 19:11

He doesn't seem to have a filter, and that could be due to the Tourette's. Talking about using internet porn the night before his interview was possibly a badly timed joke?

Mightyouandiconfabulate · 16/04/2023 19:18

I am a larger lady, I absolutely adore that he gets his belly out at every opportunity, unashamedly and gloriously, LOVE THAT.

Also his song “Before you go” touches me deeply having had someone close to me take their own life.
The song depicts exactly and precisely the words we all would have loved to have said before the event.
Very very special.

Love wee Lewis.
(His mum and dad seem AWSOME too from his documentary)

ToastandJamandTea · 16/04/2023 19:18

I think what some people see as 'crass' is just the general personality of those of us working class people from the central belt.

excelledyourself · 16/04/2023 20:21

Just watched the documentary.

Really rooting for Lewis. He seems such a decent lad and I do hope he's over the worst of his struggles. He's got some good people around him, not least of all his mum and dad, and I hope he keeps them close and trusts their judgement and intentions over the industry.

Selfishly, I wish to never hear Before You Go ever again, but only because Lewis got it so right.
