Do you do 10,000 steps a day?

As the thread says. I’ve been trying to do this and I have massively upped my activity levels this year but I’m finding it so hard to find the time to do this many walks.

I am a single parent who works full time in a sedentary job but even by making all the changes I can, such as going for a walk during their extracurricular activities instead of watching them, I’m not often hitting 10,000 steps.

do you manage it? If so, how?!

I do lots of my steps just doing housework! I dance in the kitchen when I'm doing jobs and sing to music. I work in an office but rarely dip below 10,000. I run or walk sometimes after work, normally for no more than 40 minutes.

TheDogsMother · 04/02/2023 21:47

Yes about 11000 per day but because I WFH I have to go out for about 1.5 hours in the day to walk. At weekends about 15000 - 20000. Sadly it barely makes a dent on trying to lose a few pounds.

Italiandreams · 04/02/2023 21:48

If I’m just puttering around the house I only get 2-3000 steps in. How do some people get more? At work I don’t sit down all day really but still only get 4-5000 steps! It just seems so random!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/02/2023 21:49

Yes, always. I do Get Fit With Rick walking workouts on my WFH days at lunch, and on days in work (walk there and back, plus on my feet a lot) get about 18,000. I do wear a Fitbit though so it counts just waking to the kitchen or whatever as steps.

rookiemere · 04/02/2023 21:51

@LadyVictoriaSponge it may be longer than a mile - it takes me around 30 mins each way. All I know is my tracker records about 5000 steps each way.

biddyboo · 04/02/2023 21:56

Probably not 10,000 some days but I don't measure it as it seems arbitrary to me. I workout a lot, and doing a hiit or strength workout will get my heart rate up a lot more than walking around trying to get my steps in. If I'm short of time, and have a choice between a walk or a workout, I'll choose the latter. I do make sure I get out for fresh every day though (I work from home) and I will always walk somewhere rather than drive if possible.

AlexaWhatsMyUsername · 04/02/2023 22:03

I set a challenge to myself to do 10,000 steps a day during the school summer holidays. I have just achieved 6 months! I have an office job and, even with conscious effort to move about in the office and with jobs like hanging out my washing before work, I can only max 4000 so I have to walk after work for 45-60 mins each day Mon - Fri. It’s not easy as there is always a reason not to but I do feel better for it.

Do you do 10,000 steps a day?

KangarooKenny · 04/02/2023 17:58

If I walk for about 45 minutes I do 10,000 steps just in that

That’s not right ! Your stride length is set incorrectly.

FoodieToo · 04/02/2023 22:11

I average about 18000 a day . That includes an actual walk and being very active at every opportunity in work ( teacher) .

On a walk it takes my 80 to 90 minutes to reach 10,000 steps . Maybe running at 4 k and hour you could reach 10,000 in 45 mins ??

AnnoyedFromSlough · 04/02/2023 22:22

Most days, although I only hit 8.5k today - which is unusual for a Saturday but there's a couple of reasons why that's the case.

The only days I don't usually get to 10k are ones where I'm at home all day, or mostly home with a quick trip to the local shop. Work days I am often over 10k by 11am, and almost always by 1pm.

tinfoilk · 04/02/2023 22:22

Exercise goals and zone minutes (depending on which watch you have), usually more than a brisk walk, are more important than number of steps, especially when people are getting several thousand steps in sedentary jobs like teaching and so on

Some of the smart watches rack up arm movements as steps also.

KangarooKenny · 04/02/2023 17:58

You must walk very very fast because I do a one hour dog walk in the morning (5000 steps) and then a forty or so minute walk in the evening which is around 3000 steps.

when I had a Fitbit I clocked up over 10,000 because I walk a lot in the house but with just my phone I manage about 8,000 unless I go to sainsbury’s.

BiasedBinding · 04/02/2023 22:26

What are zone minutes?

Thatladdo · 04/02/2023 22:27

Usualy between 12-17k daily, currently in limp mode at around 4-5k a day with two prolapsed discs and a fair bit of bad language 😇

Interestingly, 10k in 45 minites is running - at a 7.15min mile
Unless your legs are only a foot long ( insert cartoon sound effect here ) 🙄

WingingItSince1973 · 04/02/2023 22:32

I wish I did. I try and walk at least 2 - 3 miles a day with the dog. A good marching walk getting the heart going. But I also have arthritis and parathyroid disease so my bones hurt like mad and it makes me really tired. Although the other day I was so happy to see late evening that I had done loads more steps then realised my watch was counting my crochet stitches for the last hour 😂😂😂

BMrs · 04/02/2023 22:38

I'm trying so I've started to make sure I walk to school twice a day (1.5 mile walk) but on the days I can't because of work I don't normally hit my steps unfortunately

giggly · 04/02/2023 22:41

EarringsandLipstick · 04/02/2023 18:02

So find other ways to build in activity - I too disliked walks (runs, I loved!) pre-lockdown. I grew to love them during Covid. However, now I'm back to normal life & busy-ness, I don't get as many proper walks as I like.

But I exercise, run, and am very active around the house.

Lots of ways to get steps.

See this attitude pisses me off ,
your obviously not a full time working single parent. If only it were that simple

EarringsandLipstick · 04/02/2023 18:03

@KangarooKenny

Not a liar, but it's not possible for you to walk 10,000 steps in a 45 min walk unless you are doing teeny tiny ones.

You've made a mistake.

Definitely. The only days I do hit 10000 steps or over are the days I do a 45 minute walk. But the 10,000 steps include my steps for the entire day, so I’m pretty sure the walk only makes up about 5000 of those.

YerAWizardHarry · 04/02/2023 22:43

KangarooKenny · 04/02/2023 18:00

Yep, I do t measure how far it is, but I know it’s 10,000 steps as I have a pedometer.

Your pedometer is widely inaccurate. I would only do MAX 5000 in 45mins and I walk fast and with purpose (I’m in my 20s and fairly fit)

Aphrathestorm · 04/02/2023 22:45

I have to really make the effort. I don't beat myself up on the days I can't manage it but then I'll do more on other days to make up for it.

If you have a sedentary job and can't get out because of childcare as a single parent then of course you're going to do a lot less than someone with the freedom to come and go as they please and an active job.

determinedtomakethiswork · 04/02/2023 22:49

ofwarren · 04/02/2023 17:53

Yes
My DCs school is 2 miles away so I walk there to drop them off, then back home and then the same to pick them up.

How many steps is that?

Citycentre3 · 04/02/2023 22:51

I average around 13k steps. Even if I don't go out it is rarely under 9k.

ellecf21 · 04/02/2023 22:53

I do a minimum of 10,000, usually around 15,000 on average. I do a couple of miles walk in the morning, then throughout the day create more tasks for myself that mean I have to walk more. From getting off the tube a stop or two early, to making multiple trips up and down the stairs at home when I could be more efficient. I basically don't really stop moving in the day. I have a baby so that helps! But even before baby I would go on at least two walks a day (even if that was part of the commute) and when wfh make sure to do a 1000 steps an hour. It sounds specific but I don't even really realise I'm doing it now and it has kept me slim with the ability to eat what I want for years.

tinfoilk · 04/02/2023 22:55

BiasedBinding · 04/02/2023 22:26

What are zone minutes?

Exercise. More than a brisk walk for a guide. More important than step numbers.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/02/2023 22:55

your obviously not a full time working single parent. If only it were that simple

Sorry to disappoint @giggly

I am exactly that!

I work full time in a senior role. I am a single parent to 3 DC who do multiple sports, meaning I'm out 5 evenings a week & both weekend days. I have no family help & a shit, abusive ex who doesn't see the DC

I exercise at 6 am daily, getting up at 530. I get my steps in by being busy, basically.

Sorry I've 'pissed you off'. Do try not to make assumptions, eh?
