Home insurance renewal price!!

AndSoFinally · 03/02/2023 08:23

Just had my renewal. No changes. Have about 6 years no claims on contents and 12 on buildings (never claimed buildings)

Price was £450 last year, now they want over £2k!!

Have all policies gone up this much?! I hate shopping around for home insurance because it takes sooo long to go through all the questions, but I will if it's just my company that's raised prices this much (via Swinton, think it's underwritten by RAC)

Sounds like a mistake. Go on a price comparison site and shop around.

DoorstoManual · 03/02/2023 08:27

Ours went down by about £100

2chocolateoranges · 03/02/2023 08:29

I’d contact them and query it. We haven’t had our renewal for house insurance this year but our car insurance went up £100 but I queried it and they reduced the increase by £90.

it’s always worth contacting them,

Mabelface · 03/02/2023 08:30

My contents renewal is just over a tenner a month! Get on money supermarket or similar and let them to the quote legwork.

AndSoFinally · 03/02/2023 08:34

This gives me hope. Nearly cried when I saw the price this morning!

No thats not right, insurance hasn't gone up that much, they are trying it on. Shop around I know it's a pain but it is worth doing.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 03/02/2023 08:46

Ours with Direct Line went down thus year.
It sounds like they no longer want your business.

Yarrawonga · 03/02/2023 08:47

No change on ours.

Roselilly36 · 03/02/2023 08:48

Ours has just renewed, went up £10, I could have got it cheaper if I had shopped around, but too much going on at the moment to have had the time to bother.

FiveShelties · 03/02/2023 08:49

Has there been any flooding in your area?

userxx · 03/02/2023 08:53

£450 sounds a lot to me. Go on a price comparison site, sign up to an account and you only need to answer the questions once. I think you'll be shocked at how much you can get it for.

SedentaryCat · 03/02/2023 08:55

Definitely query it. Might be an error - unless as PP have said there has been flooding in your area.

We recently had to clear my late MILs house and in amongst the papers were many insurance renewal documents. One year she was charged over £800 for buildings insurance (not content, that was with a different insurer). Sadly no-one knew they had quoted this and it auto-renewed at this price, which she paid.

On price comparison sites we got it down to just over £100 for buildings. (Her existing insurer was quoting £130 for new customers).

DogInATent · 03/02/2023 09:01

Change your insurance broker.
A good local broker (not online, not a big chain) will get several quotes whenever renewal comes around, advise you which one is best, and would never drop a >4x increase on the premium on you without explanation.

Flumo · 03/02/2023 09:03

Mine stayed the same 🙏

SonnySideDown · 03/02/2023 09:04

I had a house fire last year so had a fairly substantial claim.

My renewal price since has gone up about £30. So yours seems way off! Best you shop around.

CurlsLDN · 03/02/2023 09:07

Just got my renewal quote from policy expert, here’s the email.

3 bed terrace in SW, have only owned for about 3 years so not as long no claims as you.

this isn’t a bad increase but I will still shop around before I confirm

Home insurance renewal price!!
Oakbeam · 03/02/2023 09:43

I think ours went up about £5 on £200ish premium. I couldn’t be bothered shop around.

pointythings · 03/02/2023 10:05

Mine went down, I have 15+ no claims though and not in a flood area. Car insurance went down after I called and queried using the comparison quote I got. You need to be prepared to challenge bad renewals otherwise they will take the piss.

MinnieMountain · 03/02/2023 10:24

Ours gradually crept up (we had a claim 6 years ago, so stuck with the same insurer). I did a price comparison this time and nearly halved it.

KenAdams · 03/02/2023 10:28

£450 sounds huge! Do you just keep renewing?

99victoria · 03/02/2023 10:30

We've got a 4 bedroom semi, paid £200 last year through moneysupermarket comparison site

Plitvice · 03/02/2023 10:33

I had this. There had been an increase in claims in our local area so the way they said it works is that they put up all the renewal prices in the area. I asked whether my one-off potential claim (not pursued) would have changed the quote . Apparently, even if I had made the claim and had work done, it would only have added £10 to my quote for next year. It is a mysterious world, home insurance!

Floralnomad · 03/02/2023 10:38

We never pay over about £220 for a top of the range buildings & contents policy , £450 is too much let alone the renewal price . We are currently with Churchill .

Alarae · 03/02/2023 10:42

Even £450 sounds expensive to me unless you have a very unique/expensive property?

We have a standard 3 bed semi (SE) and our house/contents insurance is £150 a year.

Sounds to me like shopping around is well worth it!

D20 · 03/02/2023 11:20

Thats extortionate! If you are going to go elsewhere make sure you aren’t on auto renewal as they can request the money up to two weeks before it’s due.

I’m surprised at the shock about the original price though. Ours if fairly high but we want to make sure we are fully covered and we’ve done both ways, totted up room by room how much our stuff (including clothes for a family of four) would cost to replace, and used an all encompassing £xxxxxk policy. I’d actually think some of you will low premiums might be underinsured.
