I think I regret moving jobs

So, I have always worked in retail -I've always dreamed of having an office job. No late nights, no weekends, bank holidays off... what's not to love?!? Except I have recently started a job in an office environment and I'm just not sure I'm likening it at all. Everyone is so lovely and they have a great training set up but I just don't like it. Everyone keeps saying that I'll learn to love it but I honestly just don't know if I will. I miss the interaction with real customers and the training is unbelievably difficult ( I hate learning new stuff anyway) I've literally cried all day with regret especially because my old job has filled my old role so I can't go back.

Has anyone else felt this way? I just feel so miserable tonight 😪

Can you try your old employer? Or another retail job? If you hate it already, perhaps more customer focused would suit you better.

RoseThornside · 01/02/2023 20:29

Give it about 3 months. Learning new stuff is hard - all that new terminology etc - but after a while, what you're struggling with will seem easy and you'll wonder what you found so difficult. The good thing is that you say everyone is lovely. That counts for a lot.

jeepjeep4 · 01/02/2023 20:29

My experience is that you have to give a job six months before you truly know how you feel about it.

There's already positives if the people are nice and the company invests in employees through good training.

It may just be that learning new skills and systems is hard (as it is for most) but that with time and experience you may surprise yourself with how much you have taken in.

Give it more time

LoveMyADHD · 01/02/2023 20:32

I’ve gone through this so many times … every step up is hard, give it time! You ll definitely get through this, it’s extremely normal!

lalalalahahaha · 01/02/2023 20:32

Thank you all for replying. I just I just wish I was happier about going in. 6mths just seems like a long time to feel happy. I need to establish whether it's actually the right job for me or whether I'm struggling with the learning. I'm really, really not enjoying it.

Definitely give it 3/4 months, if you still hate it, jack it in.

KendrickLamaze · 01/02/2023 20:37

I reckon this is a well known psychological thing. You're wondering if you made the right decision and focusing on the negative because you don't trust or have proof that it was right yet. And it's a whole new world. Give it time and I'm sure you will be more comfortable with the decision you've made. If not, go back to retail. You'll be fine Flowers

I say this as someone who also changed jobs and still isn't sure but I have a little more money now and more than I would have there so I know it was a good decision but I may need to move again.

lalalalahahaha · 01/02/2023 20:37

Thanks so much. I'll try and be more positive, I'm normally so upbeat so feeling this way has completely floored me. I was expecting to have a little bit of training and it would all just slot in. WRONG 🤯

I hate all my new jobs for ages after I start. Even when I left something awful. It settles.

NCSQ · 01/02/2023 20:55

How long have you been there OP?

Workbaseddrama · 01/02/2023 20:57

There are customer focused office jobs that may give you back the buzz you're probably missing by not being in retail, perhaps look for one of them?

lalalalahahaha · 01/02/2023 20:57

@NCSQ I've only been there 3 and 1/2 weeks so still very new I suppose.

Heli1copter · 01/02/2023 20:59

Not all office jobs are the same. Give it time, you've not even been there a month yet. Most people take 100 days or so to settle into something new.

lalalalahahaha · 01/02/2023 20:59

@Workbaseddrama great advice problem is I'm being trained on using computers at this job ( I've not got much IT knowledge) so to go anywhere else's I'd need to be able to use all the computer stuff really well, which I wouldn't be able to do.

Stay in post for the training, start looking elsewhere from the 8 month mark and blame the move on a fixed term contract

Ilikewinter · 01/02/2023 21:11

I inderstand OP, I went from 20 years in retail to an office role. It took me a good 6 months to feel 'normal'. I was so far out of my comfort zone. I couldnt even sit still for more than an hour, I was so used to being on my feet all day!. I think you need to give yourself time, accept that you wont learn everything overnight - and I doubt your colleagues are expecting you to.

2chocolateoranges · 01/02/2023 21:12

I’d always give a new job 6 months to settle in.

I went from hospitality working in bars to early years, a huge change, wasn’t sure if I’d made the right decision but I love it, love the weekends off and knowing that come a Friday I’m off for 2 days is such a bonus.

lalalalahahaha · 01/02/2023 21:15

@Ilikewinter yes, that's the other thing- I'm so fidgety I am so used to standing/ walking about all day I find it so difficult to stay put for 7 hrs a day. Maybe I'll love it down the line, I just wish I knew that I would. I feel like such a moan right now. Xx

lalalalahahaha · 01/02/2023 21:16

@Ilikewinter I really miss all my regular customers too. I had such lovely relationships with them all

OP posts:
Ilikewinter · 01/02/2023 21:19

Ah but are you looking back with rose tinted glasses on!? .
You left for a reason, if your lovely customers stopped coming in would you still love the job?

lalalalahahaha · 01/02/2023 21:21

@Ilikewinter I know that's the thing I suppose there were things I didn't like too. Oh I dunno, I'm all confused and can't rationalise my thoughts

I've just been through a similar thing although in the same area of work. I knew very quickly how it wasn't for me. I'd wake in the night anxious, was hiding how I really felt.
I gave it twelve months, and have moved to another organisation where already I'm more settled. Give it six months at least, try all the training and reevaluate. Good luck I hope it works out for you

Ilikewinter · 01/02/2023 21:28

@lalalalahahaha I'd ride it out for at least 6 months, get your computer training then if you genuinely still hate it, look for something else.

lalalalahahaha · 01/02/2023 21:31

@Smoky1107 yes I know what you mean. Sometimes I think you 'just know' deep down if it feels right. I'm just annoyed that I even applied for the friggin job cause now my DH is doing my head in telling me we need the extra money etc etc ( my other role was part time, this is full time)
