I can't drive at night

Ilovechintz · 29/01/2023 21:03

Just got home from seeing a friend, journey took much longer as I had to keep slowing down because oncoming lights of traffic were blinding me.

Last year I have not liked driving at night, this evening was first time in a few months and it seemed so much worse. Anyone else feel like this?

I was on the A303 and A358 which I found hardest, then on the M5 which was ok.

I wear yellow tinted glasses at night, it lessens the glare somewhat, but I'm still not over keen on it.

Biscuits1011 · 29/01/2023 21:04

There’s a word for it.. to do with your eye slight. I’m similar. I struggle at night. Someone else will come along and tell you what it’s called I’m sure…. But yeah a lot of people struggle to drive at night. The lights don’t help, it’s disorientating.

PragmaticWench · 29/01/2023 21:05

I found this after lockdown as I'd had a long period not having to drive at night. You can buy anti- glare night glasses that really help. Plus, keep doing it or you'll back yourself into a corner of not being able to cope.

RampantIvy · 29/01/2023 21:09

Are headlights brighter these days?

Acinonyx2 · 29/01/2023 21:10

Yes - I've just really noticed it over the last year. Really feel blinded by oncoming lights at night now - wondering what has happened. Must look into anti-glare night glasses or similar.

Was going to suggest the same thing.

I have a severe astigmatism and even with my normal glasses oncoming cars on the other side of the road look like they are coming at me 🫣

You can get £15 cheap frames and yellow tinted lenses.

They are a godsend!

LakeIsle48 · 29/01/2023 21:12

Everyone up our way are saying the same thing. It's like the lights are always on full beam. It's dangerous and it won't end well.

BarrelOfOtters · 29/01/2023 21:13

You can get glasses as above. Also I find it easier to drive dh’s car rather than my golf. He’s got a SUV type and it’s higher.

AnyFucker · 29/01/2023 21:13

I struggle too

I find oncoming headlights just turn into bright starbursts and dazzle me

I have to kind of squint which is horrendously tiring and scary so I limit my night driving as much as possible

LakeIsle48 · 29/01/2023 21:13

Especially for newly qualified drivers. I'm ancient and I hate it

santastolemycat · 29/01/2023 21:14

I have astigmatism and I struggle with this.
it seems to be worse when there’s a flurry of cars one after the other on the opposite side of the road.
I have an anti glare coating on my glasses and it helps.

starsinyourpies · 29/01/2023 21:14

I have astigmatism and hate driving at night!

lipstickwoman · 29/01/2023 21:15

You need an eye test to see if you have cataracts op

AugustRose · 29/01/2023 21:16

My Dh has this problem. Since his eyes started to deteriorate a few years ago night driving got worse and now he can't safely drive when it's dark unless it's a straight road. He's only 52 and this is having a significant impact on him and family life.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 29/01/2023 21:16

I swear headlights have gotten brighter in the last few years.

I have always had astigmatism and it's not got any worse but lights are now more glaring.

You can get the yellow tinted lenses really cheap from Amazon or petrol stations just to try out and see if they help. If they do you can get a more stylish set.

Astigmatism?

LakeIsle48 · 29/01/2023 21:18

I hear you loud and clear. It's frightening and downright dangerous. I pity new inexperienced kids. It's madness it really is

JustKeepSlimming · 29/01/2023 21:19

I swear headlights are getting brighter, or else the increasing numbers of SUVs (which seem to have headlights at my eye level when I'm driving) is playing a part. I find I get dazzled by oncoming lights quite often, and it seems to be SUVs every time.

Ilovechintz · 29/01/2023 21:20

@Icanflyhigh are the glasses non prescription? Just tinted?

Cataracts!
I had to give up a job as it involved night driving (up to 7pm so a good part of the year!) and I was unable to drive safely. I had both my cataracts done and now, no problems whatsoever. Go see your optician and if needs be, get a referral to get them sorted.

LakeIsle48 · 29/01/2023 21:21

I'll try the tinted glasses. My partner is a very experienced driver and he even struggles

SaltyGod · 29/01/2023 21:21

I have this too, and worse if it's raining with the light bouncing off the water on the windscreen or window.

I wind down my window at a local busy roundabout when it's raining as it just doesn't feel safe otherwise.

Optician said it was a moderate astigmatism and that I was perfectly legal to drive with it, no official concerns but it doesn't make it feel better.

I try to look at my ahead lane only, mostly at the right hand side lines.

As a PP said, worse with steams of oncoming traffic, much better on dual carriageways or on less busy roads. Can't wait for the lighter evenings.

@AnyFucker yes thats how I feel, like the lights splinter and go into vertical lines.

My.mum won't drive the a303 and a358 at night. It's worse around Yeovil and illminster than it is nearer Salisbury end
