Help me fill my new living room!

Hi everyone.

We are moving into our lovely new home next month and need some inspo. Our current living room is small so we only have space for our sofa and TV.

I need a pop of colour and at least a decent big rug as this new lounge is huge! Everything in the new home is the same colour scheme for each room so would ideally like a pop of different colours in each room but the lounge is the biggest space so need some ideas!

Pics of the lounge and my sofa below. Any suggestions / good buys / ideas on how to fill my new living space would be great. Thank you!

Photo of the sofa is in our current living room.

I’d remove the carpet first as it’s so much easier with no furniture in.

What sort of style do you like, is your sofa grey or white? Looks like you like more of a modern theme with the sofa?

Whitefly · 27/01/2023 11:45

Is your building a period property? Have you a fireplace?

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 27/01/2023 12:22

I love the windows!! I’d put money in getting some really nice Roman blinds or something.

I personally struggle with interior design, but I know I like a mix of colours rather than one colour used constantly throughout a room.

If it is a period property maybe some more traditional colours would sit nice?

How exciting.

I’d be zoning the space - sofa and TV up the far end, then something different this end of the room - what’s the other angle? Where are the doors etc?

Big artwork on far wall, definitely.

NoSquirrels · 27/01/2023 12:25

Can you draw a diagram?

fucksbizzz · 27/01/2023 12:28

The door is right behind where I'm talking the picture. It's a period building.

Desperately needs a pop of colour. Thinking about a large art piece in the far back wall. No fire place, I'm guessing there jay have been due to the position of the outer wall on the right hand side.

I'm thinking maybe in this room the colour pop could be either emerald green or a navy blue? Also thinking poss bookshelf. There's a lot of space to fill and it's an easy shaped room so shouldn't be too hard. Just unsure of what to put in there! I like the carpet, it's brand new and feels lovely and warm so I'd like to keep the carpet but I need a sizeable rug for sure!

Why would she remove the carpet?

fucksbizzz · 27/01/2023 12:33

The floor plan isn't accurate as to where the doors are. I've marked where the door is for reference

What kind of rug? Modern or trad? Large or small? Rectangle or round? Wool or synthetic or cotton dhurrie like? Highly patterned or simple pattern? Budget?

fucksbizzz · 27/01/2023 12:39

Regis fake if possible. Large. Not a trad. But maybe a bold patterned navy or emerald green? I think those are the colours I'd like to go for but open to suggestions.

I like pink and grey but bloody everyone in my circle has pink and grey so want to avoid.

Also May grey and mustard!? Will that be a good combo?
Budget for said rug £300

fucksbizzz · 27/01/2023 12:40

Rectangle if possible. Not idea what that ragis fake is about

Lovely!

So, I’d have your corner sofa with its back to the window, TV opposite wall on a nice bureau sideboard. Big artwork on far wall. Get an armchair to add extra seating that sits with its back to the rest of the room.

Bookcases on the wall by the door. An extra accent chair and standard lamp for a quiet ‘reading’ seating area near the bookcases so visible from the hallway.

Go bold with furniture accent colours if you are not painting the walls.

Pootles34 · 27/01/2023 12:44

I'm jealous OP that is a gorgeous living room! As the kitchen is quite compact, I'd wonder about some sort of storage in the living room - maybe a matching pair either side of the chimney breast with cupboards on the bottom, bookshelves on the top? They might look quite nice either side?

Fragrantandfoolish · 27/01/2023 12:45

I recently used these guys, they do some great rugs at decent prices

this one is great

and this navy and cream one.

You probably can't (and really shouldn't) take the carpet up anyway and have floorboards due the noise the neighbours below you will be subjected to

Yes zone the area and chop and change where your furniture goes once you know how best to utilise the space once you've moved in

NoSquirrels · 27/01/2023 12:54

Navy and mustard and grey - again giving you options to pull out more than one accent colour

What a lovely space! I’d put the tv on the wall on the right. Sofa back corner but pulled out slightly. Big plant in the far right hand corner for some greenery and large artwork on the wall. Rug and coffee table. Will you want a dining space in there? If so I’d break up the zones with an armchair or another sofa and have a dining table and bookshelves down this end. French Connection do some lovely homemade, you could try them for rugs, eg www.frenchconnection.com/products/poppy-outdoor-rug-pink-and-grey?gclid=Cj0KCQiAic6eBhCoARIsANlox85SFLYSuy2GDga_X3WMvjyoPH3AwNBwlyAhsXY9vmK0Y5kTrkPQdf0aAkJwEALw_wcB

Also corner tables beside seats and lamps dotted around to make it cosy rather than having the overhead lights on.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 27/01/2023 13:01

Presumably you would have a table in there too? I would zone into a homework/ dining area and then a relaxing area at the far end. I think navy and emerald would look really nice as accents in there.

Fragrantandfoolish · 27/01/2023 13:04

Also this one is stunning, I have a nourison rug and it’s great quality, they have 20% off so you could get it for 380. It would warm your room, and add colour.

ive this one and it’s lovely, will last forever but it’s not your colour scheme

One dark feature wall if you can spare a couple of weekends to paint. Dark aubergine or dark blue leaning towards grey would work. It would just add some warmth/character and create a focal point. An Ikea picture ledge so you can play around with some photo frames and change it up. A dark rug or three cushions to match the aubergine/dark blue feature wall. One big plant. That’s all it needs imao. It looks like a great ‘blank canvas’ atm.

fruitbrewhaha · 27/01/2023 13:05

You need some grand curtains on those windows.

I like the Eloise rug above.

WorkRunCookKidsRepeat · 27/01/2023 13:10

oh and I’d try and create a couple of different zones in the room to break it up a bit. Ours is big and it has a home working office corner (aka desk), a dining zone (aka dining table and low Ikea bookshelves those cube ones) with the budgie cage, and a tv/chill/den zone where the huge corner sofa and tv and a boardgames cupboard live. This is where we have our dark blue feature wall for a bit of atmosphere. We also have everything else mainly beige/white.

DilemmaDelilah · 27/01/2023 13:23

I have said it before and I will say it again. Find something you love and take your colours from that, rather than trying to find something to fit into your colour scheme. Look for a rug that you like, or a picture, or even a fabric. Take 2 or 3 of the colours out of that and choose your accessories in those colours. They can be colours in the same area of the colour palette (e.g. Blue, turquoise, navy, green, purple) or opposites - at one time we had cushions in burnt orange, raspberry and turquoise and they looked really great on a black leather sofa. We now have a donkey grey corner sofa and have cushions in duck egg, honey yellow and raspberry. Our walls and curtains are plain duck egg, but we have some pictures on our walls which contain gold and deep pink, amongst other colours, and we have taken our colours from those. I love colour but hate decorating, and it's really easy to change the look of a room with your accessories.
