Tiny blister on eyeball

Firstly I realise none of you can diagnose me over the internet, I've had an online GP appointment but it wasn't very helpful! So thought I'd ask here in case anyone else has had this.

So earlier today I felt like there was something in my eye, like the feeling of a piece of grit or something. Gave it a rinse but still felt it. Looked up close in my magnifying mirror and there's what looks like a tiny blister on my eyeball, just above the iris.

The GP basically said keep an eye on it (ha!) and go to A&E where there is an eye clinic if it gets any worse. She couldn't actually see anything over the online call, it needs to be seen up close.

Anyone know what this might be or has anyone experienced it? Not sure if I should be worried. Thanks

Do you sometimes get any herpes outbreaks ?
It's little known but you can get them in your eyes , which would be a blister.

seventynine · 26/01/2023 22:46

Oh I didn't know that, but no I've never had herpes

Hi! Of course unsure as I can't see it but I had something similar a few times over the last few years and it was a small ulcer on the eye! Is it very painful? Mine was so sore every time I blinked and eye was very watery. Had to go to moorfields eye hospital each time for 'aggressive' antibiotics (had to do drops every hour for 5 days except when sleeping!) I wear lenses and they thought I'd either scraped my eye or dirt had got in and basically sat on the lenses 🙈

Have you asked for appointment with an Optometrist at a Opticians? They are more experienced in eye conditions than most GP’s and can refer you to hospital if necessary.

PriamFarrl · 26/01/2023 22:48

Can you make an opticians appointment? They would have to do a full appointment, not just have a quick look but they can refer you if needed.

Beautifulsunflowers · 26/01/2023 22:48

Go to an opticians in the morning. When I had an issue with my eye the opticians were brilliant and if necessary can refer into the eye clinics in the hospital.

Oh that does sound nasty poor you! It's not really painful, just irritating.

Sorry forgot to add that it started by feeling irritable /grit and got progressively worse so don't leave it too long like me!

seventynine · 26/01/2023 22:49

Good idea re opticians, why didn't I think of that? I will ring round in the morning, thanks

Agree on the opticians, they can have a proper look! Good luck and hope it gets better

Justmeandthedog1 · 26/01/2023 22:50

It could be a corneal ulcer. Often related to herpes ( cold sore on your lip, touch that then rub your eye, easily done) but not always.
Look online if your nearest hospital has an eye A&E, they’re the experts , have all the equipment and you’ll get an immediate diagnosis and treatment.

Namechanger355 · 26/01/2023 22:52

I just had another eye issue and went to Moorfields a and e as in London on the advice of an online gp as it was Sunday

but you should either do that or go to optician - they have the knowledge and equipment to tell you what it could be and will refer you if needed

Namechanger355 · 26/01/2023 22:52

you don’t want to take a risk with your cornea - that’s what I was told by the Moorfields doctor anyway as I wear contacts

Defiantlynot41 · 26/01/2023 23:06

If it's on the white of your eye it could be episcleritis en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Episcleritis

I've had it a couple of times, painful but resolved quite quickly

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 26/01/2023 23:12

DH has had two of these recently. Diagnosed by optician and then subsequently A&E. he got some squirt stuff to put in his eye several times a day to basically stop it drying out and the eyelid ripping the top off the blister. You can apparently end up with a seriously nasty and recurring problem so I would get yourself seen asap.

Moral of the story, don't install insulation, even eco friendly non fibre glass stuff without eye protection.

Tintackedsea · 26/01/2023 23:23

I get nodular episcleritis. It's horrible. Looks like an ulcer on the eyeball. You need to see an optician asap.

HallwayDoor · 26/01/2023 23:24

Also second opticians in the morning. Most have kind of emergency slots for things like this on the NHS.

user764329056 · 26/01/2023 23:28

Have corneal ulcer, known as ophthalmic herpes, exactly same as cold sore, flares up when I’m run down

Mammyloveswine · 26/01/2023 23:32

I had this!! It's quite normal and mine went within a few days on its own....was so weird though!!

If it gets painful or bigger see an optician or eye dept at hospital.

TheAustralian · 26/01/2023 23:35

Sounds like a Sty. Totally harmless just feels horrible and scratchy whenever you blink. It’ll go away soon.

Mammyloveswine · 26/01/2023 23:37

Mine looked like this OP...

You need to see the eye clinic at a hospital. I had this, turned out that not only did I have an ulcer on my cornea, my cornea was covered in scars from previous ulcers (basically every time I have previously thought I had an eye infection I had actually had an ulcer). Caused by blocked eye glands in my case. I had months of steroid eye drops to get right.

Thanks everyone I appreciate all the responses. I'm going to try either the eye clinic or opticians this morning. We're going away for the weekend so I want to get it looked at beforehand.
