Do all primaries have the same inset days in UK?

skingraft · 26/01/2023 10:36

I’ve noticed all the primaries locally have the same inset days (always attached onto the school holiday)

Wondered if generally most or all primaries also share inset days?

looking to book a day out somewhere notoriously busy and queue-y on weekends/school holidays so thought inset day would be a good idea... but obviously it won’t make a difference if it’s the same everywhere!

thanks

It’s just the same by education authority. Of course another council nearby may also decide on the same one, but not always.

BlackInk · 26/01/2023 10:38

No definitely not. I live in a town with several primaries (and a secondary) and inset days aren't always the same – common for them all to tag an inset day onto either end of a school holiday though.

Smartiepants79 · 26/01/2023 10:44

Short answer is, no.
Schools can choose their own training days.
In reality a lot of schools will choose to match up with the other schools around them.

As a pp said it's the individual school that decides the inset days so can be different. Ours are usually tagged onto holidays and dates given well in advance but not always.

PuttingDownRoots · 26/01/2023 10:50

My observation is that Primary schools seem to add them to a school holiday, so they can be quite similar.

Secondary schools are random. I have my Yr7 home today for example...

MaverickGooseGoose · 26/01/2023 10:50

No although a lot of schools around here are now choosing to do twilight inset instead and finish the term a day early.

Not even at that level. Schools in the same town can have different days.

skingraft · 26/01/2023 10:57

Thanks for the replies! Okay so I’m guessing busy day out places are a little quieter on an inset day :)

No. Everywhere is different. Half terms and Easter Holidays often aren't even the same (sometimes even within the same towns).

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/01/2023 11:09

Schools choose their own, even within the same town/local authority.

It makes sense for schools to use inset days at the start/end of the year for brief/debrief sessions.

If external providers are needed for say first aid or safeguarding, then they can't deliver this to all schools at the same time (as was the case before inset days were taken out of school holidays). Often local schools may join together to do training together, use the same trainer etc, but this is decided locally.

I wish they would coincide though! I have three schools with different ones to consider!

EVHead · 26/01/2023 11:10

In Scotland they’re set by the local authority so are the same across all schools. Neighbouring authorities sometimes set the same days as each other, sometimes not.

LoveBluey · 26/01/2023 11:14

Nope it's up to the school. We even had instances of an infant and junior school (linked) choosing different inset days. Parents understandably complained as when you have children at both it doubles the days you need to cover childcare.

Jules912 · 26/01/2023 11:17

Nope, but tacked onto a holiday is very popular. I had the same idea once and went to a theme park on an inset tacked onto the May half term, never seen it so busy! Only made that mistake once.

Whattheladybird · 26/01/2023 11:18

Some of our schools are grouped and take the same day off. Some schools that share a site have different days. Good luck!

Oh no!

This is an inset day tacked on to the end of Easter. Hoping to go to a certain plastic toy building block inspired land 😅

I think we will just risk it, slightly cheaper tickets than weekend prices as well.

Weirdly we went to Alton Towers during term time pre-kids during autumn and it was really busy!

Each council sets term dates. Schools/Academies choose their own training days. Sometimes this is based round when a particular trainer that they want is free.

Frumpymumma · 26/01/2023 12:21

Our town has all same education authorities
My friends kids school was off inset last Fri.
My other friends is this Monday coming

My dcs is the monday after.

All schools within a 2 mile radius

Frumpymumma · 26/01/2023 12:22

Oh and my brothers kids school last year added 5 to the Oct half term to give an extra week off.

underneaththeash · 26/01/2023 12:23

Is it Monday 17th?
windsor schools all seem to be back, but a few of the primaries in bucks have inset days.

I suspect it won’t be too busy, but see what the weather is like nearer the time? Most things are outside, so it’s a bit miserable if it’s cold and wet.

maddy68 · 26/01/2023 12:29

No. Not even in the same area where I live

reluctantbrit · 26/01/2023 12:43

They are all over the place in our borough but multi-academy trusts do try and put them on the same day.

Doesn't cover all of them, DD's secondary has a couple but not the primary schools in the same trust but the main ones added to holidays are the same.

Spudina · 26/01/2023 12:46

No. Our infants and Juniors are next door to each other, but ran by different academy trusts and therefore have different inset days. It’s difficult when you have a child in each.

popandchoc · 26/01/2023 13:45

We are in Hertfordshire and both children are off on Monday 17th and one still off Tues 18th. Inset days seem to be different by school round here.

Craftybodger · 26/01/2023 13:53

We’re off the whole week of 17th.
Holidays are not the same across authorities and different authorities have different approaches to training days. Round here they are usually set by the school, but there are some cluster ones so that colleagues can meet to share best practice or train together. Training days are usually added to the beginning or end of holidays or half terms, unless an outsider provider needs otherwise, when, very rarely, it could be a Monday or Friday.

SchoolTripDrama · 26/01/2023 15:17

Sorry if I sound thick here but is an inset day another name for teacher training day? Or is this a new thing added on??
