Can I stop claiming UC?

UCClaimStopPlease · 25/01/2023 12:03

Basically got a job that gives me more per year than UC does, but I still get a UC top up. My DC is aged under 10 but only just so I want to come off UC completely as I don’t want to be forced to work more hours.

DC has a medical condition and SN so I work part time to be around for them, they do not get DLA as I’ve applied so many times and it be rejected that I’ve given up with it.

I have been told that due to my DC I have to stay on UC, and that if I don’t the job centre will report me to SS. Which I’m a bit worried about as School say I don’t take part in school related activities (i.e. I don’t go to the fayres or fundraisers, I do go to sports days and parents evenings and plays though) and they often blame me for DCs SN.

I just want to stop my UC claim and be left to live my life. My job doesn’t involve progression or more money but I’m happy, I can afford my bills and DC never goes without. I also have savings now so if I lost my job I could manage for a few months without UC until another came along or after a few months I'd claim UC if I couldn't find anything

I’m a single parent so that’s why I get UC top up but I’d rather not claim as I can manage without it as I also get CM from my DCs dad.

I work from home 25 hours a week and earn around £25k if that’s relevant.

Are you not fulfilling your Claimant Commitment? You could always just stop attending the job centre/looking for other work and they would potentially sanction you.

Unless there is something you are not telling us the JC will not report you to social services.

I do wonder if there's a backstory here but no, you would not be reported to social services for not claiming UC anymore also you don't ever have to claim anything if you don't want to. You just send them a message asking to close your claim.

did they say why they would report if you stopped claiming? Never heard of anything like that in my life!

QueenieL1 · 25/01/2023 12:29

Absolutely bizarre

TheRookie · 25/01/2023 12:35

You can do whatever you like OP. Surely you've no commitment to claim UC if you now have a job that ensures you don't need to claim it? No one has to claim benefits no matter how low an income they're on!!

JackandVeras · 25/01/2023 12:41

Just close your claim down online, no need for any contact with them.

Sleepwouldbenicesometimes · 25/01/2023 12:50

Just stick a note in your journal saying you want to stop your claim. You'll lose entitlement to any associated support and benefits though but that's your call to make.

NameChange005 · 25/01/2023 12:53

Of course you can stop claiming whenever you like. You don't even have to explain why.

riotlady · 25/01/2023 13:00

Who had told you that you’ll be reported to
social services?

I’m also surprised they’re pushing you to find more/different work when you’re working 25 hours at a reasonably paid job and have children- have you sat down and talked it all through with your job coach?

@UCClaimStopPlease can you tell us more about the back story? I think that is the only way we can help you x

Danikm151 · 26/01/2023 02:27

That sounds like bull if you’ve been told that.
claimant commitments with primary aged children is to earn the equivalent of 25 hours at minimum wage.
it would be silly to stop your claim as it’s money you are entitled to.

Hieveryone123 · 29/08/2023 00:43

Do you need to supply any documents or info to close your claim down or can you just close it down and that’s the end of it

They aren't going to force you to look for additional work if you are earning 25k and working 25 hours a week. I don't know why they'd ring ss if you stopped claiming though, ss aren't going to care

Not clicking, but I'm assuming it's amusing

There's a series called the walking dead, very popular apparently, and it has zombies in it and one of the main characters is called Rick

Lol, thanks 😊
