Friends who do drugs

Shakeyourtailfeather · 25/01/2023 11:21

Needs some opinions. Made some new school mum friends. Been friends for a year. Seem nice, happy to do favours and welcoming eg. Me and DS can come over for tea whenever, days out. They are nice people.

However the only thing I'm wary of which I've found out recently is that they do drugs. So about 4 mums of a group of 9 do drugs. I'm torn because the job I specifically want to do is working with vunerable young people and therefore I don't want to be tainted with hanging around with people who do drugs. Do you think I should back away from the friendships? It's sad because they are nice however I'm not sure I can see a way to continue the friendship

I take drugs sometimes, not half as often as I used to. I exercise regularly, I don’t drink much at all and don’t overeat. (Comparable vices). If I thought I was being judged for it by people who don’t know me, I would question their worldliness and probably not want to bother with them either.

Are they worse parents than the ones who drink regularly? Probably not…….

Gangs, organised crime, dealers and county lines are what keeps the drugs world turning....real people are dragged in to keep it all in motion

Not so much a 6 pack from Tesco

Doubt it, if you read my post.

For sure, but it is the government who refuse to legalise drugs who are to blame for this vicious cycle , not recreational drug users. Consumers consume many services without any thought of the vulnerable people throughout the supply chain. Nail bar anyone ??

Why would you be tarnished by people you know taking drugs.

Most of my friends take drugs. I don't. I hold a a job with serious consequences if I was ti take drugs. I have never been "tarnished" by my friends drug taking.

Most people I know actually ooenly take drugs. I bet more than you think do that are already in your close circle

You are only tarnished by your own actions not that of others

postwarbulge · 25/01/2023 14:37

Are these people just rolling up the Sunday joint or snorting lines?

Either way, best to keep them at arm's length.

I can't respect people with great lives and jobs who take drugs. I abhor the whole system and the exploitation of children that goes in to supplying them with the drugs. I have sympathy for people with darker histories of abuse and hardship, but the middle class wealthy lot you describe just repel me. I know some people like it, they are well off, high level jobs and completely boring to be around when they are tanked up. I avoid them and want nothing to do with them.

You nailed it. I couldn't agree more (see my post)

I have similar feelings to this. It smacks of the upper middles who think they're sooo edgy and cool for supporting this awful trade, whilst simultaneously waxing lyrical about other types of exploitation totally ignorant of their hypocrisy.

Most people you know "openly" take drugs?? I assume you're fairly young and not a parent?

I'm in my 50s .....

OriGanOver · 25/01/2023 14:57

You will find that you won't be 'in' properly with the ones who take drugs because they will bond over their secret snorting.

Don't fall out with anyone. Just don't let your kid go over for sleepovers.

No, your job will not be at risk by you being mum friendly with them. Recreational drug use is not a child protection issue in the majority of cases. Especially as they don't drive, get up and work etc.

Celinia · 25/01/2023 14:58

You have to weigh it up. Are you they likely to start using around you? Are you uncomfortable knowing about this? Are they discrete/organised/disciplined? If there’s a chance they’re using when their kids are about, it would be a no from me.

That's ridiculous.
Amongst my friends we have drug takers , drinkers , non drinkers. Everyone is just as close

workiskillingme · 25/01/2023 15:07

It annoys me the way people on mn make all sorts of excuses for middle class people on drugs yet if Chantelle off the estate was on ket they wouldn't allow their kid to even look at theirs

Totally agree. People who take drugs are complicit in the crimes associated with the making, transporting and dealing of drugs. I would not socialise with them.

I doubt they're doing drugs regularly or around their kids. But if it bothers you then yes you should back away.

When my neice and nephew were young my sister attended a classmates party with them (year 4, private school). Some of the mums were doing coke at the party, including those on the Board of Governors.

I also always wonder where the cool MN drug-taking thing stops when it comes to the law: are you also good with drink-driving, or buying stuff off the shady fence down the local pub, or getting your nails / brows done by people who are clearly trafficked?

Where does convenience / a good time stop, ethically?
