Aw those Waitrose pancakes are delicious! Prob not the best bfast in comparison to cereal that contain vitamins but ok as a one off.

Needmorelego · 23/01/2023 15:28

@pornyshroudofturin I agree....just the one is like eating a puff of air. I pop the pancakes in the toaster so always have two at a time. It's the rules.
It's really annoying that the Warburton crumpets come in packs of 9. Odd numbers are just no good.

As a kid I'd sometimes have these toasted quickly under the grill and spread with butter

sorrynotathome · 23/01/2023 15:42

When I saw how few calories are in Weetabix, I remembered how I’ve always thought breakfast cereal to be the work of the devil.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/01/2023 15:45

I don't know why my hospital ward bothers asking kids what they want for breakfast. Everyone has pancakes!

From what I've been learning from Tim Spector, the problem is as much the really atrocious impact on gut bacteria of the things the food industry uses to make it cheaper to produce things - so thickeners, stabilisers, monodiglyerides, preservatives and some acids, as well as sugar. They've basically discovered that the gut is like a new organ or maybe a second brain - they're only just beginning to uncover how incredibly important it is for mental (!) and physical health and how fucked we all are with a Western diet (they don't even know that all of the damage is reversible), and how absolutely corrupt and unethical the food industry is.

It's been a real shock to discover that the foods I considered 'healthy' are not, at all, if they have any of those industrial additives in. I've cooked from scratch for years using food that I'd assumed was pretty healthy - but all the things I use that aren't actual vegetables or simple grains, pasta etc - are awful. The whole seeded bread I've been buying - awful. Mission wraps - awful. The stockpot - awful. The vegan greek yoghurt and oat milk - awful. It's bollocks, I'm quite shaken. On the other hand, things without those additives can be much less crap than you might think - eg baked beans.

Sorry for long and slightly off-topic post. Short answer is: turn the packet over and look at the additives. There'll be some brands that are ok, some that are shit, and others that are shitter, and it's not always obvious which is which.

Well they're not great nutritionally as they're just like cake - they are made from flour, butter, sugar, eggs. But they're fine once in a while and some people have them more frequently, it's up to you.

Snugglemonkey · 23/01/2023 16:20

My DC regularly has raspberries, strawberries and pancakes with Nutella. I make the pancakes.

Lcb123 · 23/01/2023 16:38

I'd only have these as an occasional treat, not a regular breakfast. High sugar and minimal nutritional value

queenofthewild · 23/01/2023 16:46

They are delicious, but really high in sugar.

We have them from time to time, but had to remind DS they weren't going to be a regular daily breakfast.

ThreeRingCircus · 23/01/2023 16:49

They're fine. Not brilliant nutrition wise but as part of a range of things eaten over the course of a week it's not even worth worrying about. So much breakfast cereal is laden with sugar.

DDs usually have Weetabix or porridge for breakfast at home but today had toasted hot cross buns with butter. If DD1 goes to breakfast club she has jam on toast, when DD2 goes to nursery she usually has rice krispies. As long as they're not having a chocolate bar for breakfast every day and they're starting the day having eaten something I don't worry.

Itisbetter · 23/01/2023 16:51

Well it’s cake (the clues in the name), so egg sugar butter flour….

honestlyno · 23/01/2023 18:18

Pringlepopping · 23/01/2023 09:25

I didn’t buy them dh did

LTB!

Joking of course. They are not the healthiest but fine for a one off, or a weekend treat. Wouldn't give it another thought.

Pancakes do not traditionally contain sugar or butter unless you shove them on as a topping (guilty).

cuminpotato · 23/01/2023 18:25

Am I the only one that fries these in butter? 😳

Itisbetter · 23/01/2023 20:03

@Flapjackquack american or scotch do, they are basically slack cake butter.
