Haggis Neeps & Tatties

I have never tried haggis - what does it taste like? Quite fancy trying the traditional Scottish Burns Night supper, minus the whisky as not really a fan.

Haggis is oatmeally and spicy. McSween's veggie haggis is the best.

Gatekeeper · 23/01/2023 07:43

I love Haggis ans I love the pinhead oatmeal in it as well. Slightly gamey and peppery ans complimented so well by bashed tatties and neep

Timeforachangeisitnot · 23/01/2023 07:45

I would second veggie haggis over the original recipe, which contains minced offal and oatmeal, and smells when it’s cooked.

The veggie ones I have tasted are ‘milder’ and in my case, less likely to cause indigestion , but they taste fine. As pp said, slightly spicy ( from pepper) and ideally moist.

it can be a dry meal, and is often just a starter portion at a Burns supper.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/01/2023 07:47

Love Haggis - bit of a rebel here though, usually serve it with baked beans.
Tried the veggie version - not a patch on the meat based one.

WildGeece · 23/01/2023 07:52

I agree with others- if you've never had it, go for the veggie one first. But if you like meaty fatty things, dive straight into the real deal.

It's only dry if over cooked- it should be moist. Plus served with mashed potatoes and neeps, will provide moisture. Scots do eat it as a main meal, although you will see it as a starter in restaurants.

Are you in Scotland? Your other option is deep-fried haggis supper from the chippy.
Brown sauce a must.

Yum.

Veryactivenymphomaniac · 23/01/2023 08:02

I like mine with tomato sauce - sweet against the pepper!

Dustyblue · 23/01/2023 08:03

May as well give it a try! (she says being too squeamish herself)

On Scottish food in general- I'm of Scot descent and anytime I have to make anything in that vein, I make Aberdeen Sausage. Cooks well ahead, eaten cold or at room temp. Plus pickles and bread, freaking delicious.

By tatties, do you mean just potato in some form, or those fried flour/potato dumpling things?

Sounds like fun anyway!

Christmascracker0 · 23/01/2023 08:07

Haggis is really peppery, I have mine with ketchup. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one!

We usually have it mashed tatties and turnip mashed with carrot. Yum!

DressingForRevenge · 23/01/2023 08:09

2 fat ladies did they neeps with mint and cream.

Circleoffifths · 23/01/2023 08:09

I love haggis, neeps and tatties.

I don’t live in Scotland and have been trying to find somewhere nearby which does it. Was really excited to see somewhere local advertising it on Instagram but was put off as they called it haggis, mash and swede. That’s just not right.

weebarra · 23/01/2023 08:25

Tatties are just potatoes, need to be mashed (with butter and cream!). We have H, N & T with whisky cream sauce on the side. DS2 has it with brown sauce.

What is an Aberdeen sausage? I’m from Aberdeen and I’ve never heard of it.

exLtEveDallas · 23/01/2023 08:30

We do it regularly through the year as part of a Sunday roast. But I do an onion gravy with it as DH and DD say it’s too dry without.
(I remember getting haggis, neeps and tatties in a bun at Glastonbury instead of a burger. Bloody lovely it was).

It's a funny one- I made it for "International Day" at work & my boss (who was born in Aberdeen) hadn't heard of it either. Maybe it's just my clan, and it got lost in translation on the boat over here in the 1850's 😀

Can't be bothered typing my family recipe but this is pretty close:

I love Haggis. We have it with normal roast accompaniment like roast potatoes and gravy. Yum. I like it dry, so bake it instead of steaming.

Dustyblue · 23/01/2023 08:58

Sorry just on Aberdeen Sausage again- it was originally a way to use up leftover meats. A bit like haggis. I do mine with pure lamb and bacon, no cereals or offal.

I have it on hot toast with butter, with pickles or relish, hmmm. Total faff around to make but lasts for days in the fridge.

This. Had the veggie one once and never again. Not a patch on the real thing.

beguilingeyes · 23/01/2023 09:06

Haggis is lush. I have one in the freezer for Wednesday. It's quite rich and kind of sticks to your ribs, so it's wonderful in this weather.
There's a Nepalese restaurant near us that does haggis pakoras.

Lorrymum · 23/01/2023 09:08

I love haggis, serve mine with mash (tatties)and peas. Im not sure about veggie haggis.
Its a shame I can't find white puddings in England.

Dustyblue · 23/01/2023 09:10

I watched a Hairy Bikers episode last night where ther helped make and eat haggis. Was half way between revolted and hungry.

I like black pudding, that's not so far off is it?

VenusClapTrap · 23/01/2023 09:13

Haggis is lovely! I’m going to have to nip to Waitrose now to get some. Thanks for the reminder.

Veggie haggis? Hardly a traditional Burns Night supper
(and totally ridiculous)

Everygrainofsand1 · 23/01/2023 09:16

DH loves it with carrots swede and potatoes, I get the Macsween one, DH microwaves it as on the pack as he enjoys it like that. I have something else with the vegetables as I don't like it.

DressingForRevenge · 23/01/2023 09:16

I’ve never heard of Aberdeen sausage either. 🤷‍♀️ Best thing to come out of Aberdeen is butteries. ❤️

Veggie haggis is vile - but mealy pudding is a good (yummy) alternative although still I suspect 50% lard.

I was going to say - looks like a haggis method of using up beef, are you in the states? I love this kind of stuff, people adapting a traditional technique. There's a bit of meat loaf in there too.
