M&S is going to outprice a lot of its customers

I popped into an M&S food shop this afternoon and it was the first time I’ve had a proper browse of the shop in a while. And the prices now for a lot of staple items are, in my opinion, quite frankly ridiculous!

Yes I know prices have gone up a lot everywhere, but wow, over £5 for some chicken goujons…?

Good. I’d noticed some riff-raff creeping in over the last year or two. This will sort that issue out.

Sorry that was me! I just fancied a decent sandwich 😂

Onceinbluemoon · 22/01/2023 17:05

500g butter is £3.80 in Marks, £4.75 in Tesco. Yes, ready meals have gone up, as have bakery items … but what hasn’t?

Cherry60 · 22/01/2023 17:08

As above - I buy butter in there because it's cheaper than the other supermarkets. They also do proper discounts on stuff going out of date (unlike sainsburys tight bastards)

The 3 for £8 is the deli deal ready to eat small packs I think? With bits such as pork pies, quiche, mozzarella balls etc.

The family size goujons which need cooking, 500ish gram pack is £5 or 3 for £12.

I think five pounds is about right really.

roses2 · 22/01/2023 17:17

I'm now spending more in supermarkets on higher quality food because the price of takeaways has gone through the roof so I cook at home myself instead. So sounds about right their profits are up as I suspect many others are doing the same!

Supersimkin2 · 22/01/2023 17:20

I shop daily in M and S cos live next door.

M&S food Basics are cheaper than Tesco - yep, really.

Right now M&S eggs, Carrots, bread, milk and butter are the cheapest around - you can pay more if you want a swanky sourdough or a purple carrot, of course. Believe me, I’m shopping around and was staggered to find this in inner London.

Am partial to novelty carrots but I do the stock-up at M&S now too.

My tip: get a 2kg bag of plain potatoes for 95p, then dig the baking potatoes out - which are identical and sold for £2 for 4. Use the other tatties as normal.

I buy cool comfort stuff - nightwear and tees - in bulk in the sale. I get hot flushes. Cool Comfort actually works.

Loo roll is always Aldi tho. M and S too scented and refained for my derrière.

Is this satire?

I go to M&S foodhall at least once a week, and it's always heaving. They're doing so well that new foodhalls are opening all over the UK. The quality is excellent, and we waste nothing.

GradNonFashinista · 22/01/2023 17:24

Well to be honest I thought the same about Iceland the other week, the price of some of the stuff in there was terrible so I don’t think M&S is alone.

Floralnomad · 22/01/2023 17:26

I really don’t think you will be shopping in an M&S foodhall if you are looking for a cheap option . I shop there because they do a good GF pizza and it’s included in a pizza meal deal and the other gf food is very nice . They do have lots of 3 for / meal deal type offers and some things are competitively priced , whilst other stuff is worth buying because it tastes better than the equivalent from other supermarkets .

Chesneyhawkes1 · 22/01/2023 17:27

My local Tesco is way over priced. They have no competition.

I drive to M&S or Waitrose which are the next nearest and the prices for most things isn't that different. And the food is nicer.

Places like marks, and supermarkets' finest ranges often do well in a downturn because people downgrade their meal out to some nice stuff from the supermarket.

Yep, we have stopped takeaways and get some nice food from m&s for less than half the price of a take away.

Whiskeypowers · 22/01/2023 17:28

the Coop prices are just outrageous never mind M&S.

HRTQueen · 22/01/2023 17:28

I think for most people buying food at M&S is a bit of a treat it’s always been pricey

I was very surprised to hear they are opening more stores. I don’t know how some of them survive

DillDanding · 22/01/2023 17:31

We do pretty much all our food shopping at M&S. I can’t say I’ve noticed it being more expensive than a year ago.

MadameOvary81 · 22/01/2023 17:32

But everything in M&S tastes superior, so it's worth it, IMO. I'd happily pay double that for their goujons, because I know i'm going to enjoy them. It's quality over quantity for me.

Whiskeypowers · 22/01/2023 17:32

I get certain things from M&S which are regular shop items and I have tried other shops but they are not as good and not much cheaper
-goes with everything tomato pasta sauce is lovely
cocktail sausage rolls
proper ham not formed rubbish
fresh stir sauces
bagged salad
their easy peeler oranges are much nicer
butter is generally cheaper there
extra fruity yoghurts
their Chinese range is also great
The chocolate chip cookies

not exactly high end luxury items

Maireas · 22/01/2023 17:32

They don't just survive, @HRTQueen , they're thriving! So much so that they're expanding. Every time I go, it's busy and there's a massive queue. Quality, tasty food.

ouch321 · 22/01/2023 17:33

A broccoli in Tesco and Morrisons is c70-75p. (It was even cheaper at Xmas).

Yet at Lidl it's 95p.

It's easy to make assumptions about where is cheapest but it's not always right.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 22/01/2023 17:36

I like their antipasto range. It’s now £8 for 3, whereas it used to be £7 which was pricey, but a treat, at £8 they can swivel!

willingtolearn · 22/01/2023 17:36

They do an excellent pasta deal for £6 for fresh pasta, choice of about 6 sauces and a large fancy bread (or 4 smaller garlic breads). If you choose tagliatelle or spaghetti then it can feed 4 for £1.50 each, especially if you add some veg.

I do my main food shop there for quality and value reasons. As i said previously they arent trying to appeal to everyone. My local is always full of regular shoppers i see there every week.

mydogisthebest · 22/01/2023 17:40

A lot of their food is the same price or cheaper than other supermarkets. I find their fruit and veg is often cheaper and certainly is better quality.

Their baked beans are 55p for a large tin and me and DH think they are the best beans by miles. Also their crunchy peanut butter is much nicer than any others and cheaper

Bluebellbike · 22/01/2023 17:46

I live close to a large M &S store in a north west town. The whole store, particularly the M & S food hall, is almost always really busy. I thought the food hall would quieten down after Christmas but it's just the same. Not an affluent area either but we do get a lot of footfall from further afield. So prices going up hasn't put M & S shoppers off.

N00bz · 22/01/2023 17:47

I go to M&S about once a month as there isn’t one near me.

I’m not particularly price-sensitive so tend to just add what I want to the trolley and lucky to not have to worry if the total at the checkout is a bit of a surprise.

They definitely have some lovely things, but I don’t really see the big deal about a lot of their ready meals. They’re probably that bit nicer than most other supermarkets, but all ready meals tend to be a bit of a letdown, don’t they?

That said, I was in M&S today so I’m now we’ll stocked up on hot cross buns, those little tubs of Cornflake buns, olives, pizzas, mozzarella sticks, Eccles cakes, and I bagged one of their Chinese meal boxes that was yellow-stickered at £4 so that’s a cheap and easy dinner tonight. Definitely won’t taste as soon as an actual Chinese takeaway though.
