M&S is going to outprice a lot of its customers

I popped into an M&S food shop this afternoon and it was the first time I’ve had a proper browse of the shop in a while. And the prices now for a lot of staple items are, in my opinion, quite frankly ridiculous!

Yes I know prices have gone up a lot everywhere, but wow, over £5 for some chicken goujons…?

I have Ocado deliveries and occasionally pop into M and S. I noticed that many M and S items with Ocado are 10 or 20pence dearer than in the shop.

BHRK · 22/01/2023 16:40

Ocado M&S prices are higher than in the shop.
M&S has gone up but so has everywhere. I’m still willing to pay their prices for their great food

ReviewingTheSituation · 22/01/2023 16:46

On the flip side, they have a deal on Italian ready meals (for 1) - 3 for £7.50. That makes them cheaper than a sandwich for lunch, and fewer calories/lower fat than many sandwiches too.
(At full price they're cheaper than a lot of sandwiches too).

@Overthinker918

Well, they're opening up quite a lot of superstores, so maybe you should get in touch with them to point out you think they're going to out price their customers.

🤷🏻‍♀️

Why is there such enthusiasm for M&S bashing?

I went to a big one the other day and they had so many nice clothes, and the food has always been more treat tea than weekly shop...

Lorrymum · 22/01/2023 16:51

Big fan of Markies. I buy own brand breakfast cereal, tea, sliced bread, baked beans, tinned soup (all cheaper than Sainsburys and better quality). Always well stocked, I get fed up of Sainsbury's and empty shelves.

hugoagogo · 22/01/2023 16:51

75p for a box of branflakesWink

Interesting comment about restaurants. All seem to be very busy round here, local good pub’s car park full and loads of cars parked on the road outside today and every lunchtime. Friends went to see in laws in Wales and had difficulty booking anywhere to take a mum out as all fully booked.

Agree. We went to Cote Brasserie in our town last night and it was packed!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 22/01/2023 16:12

They havent been 3 for £8 for a long time.

Eh? I bought 3 for £8 yesterday...

Honper · 22/01/2023 16:53

It's the cheapest place near me for sliced brown, eggs, butter and milk.

BungleandGeorge · 22/01/2023 16:54

I agree that their clothes seemed to improve last season and aren’t really that expensive.
I think the price hikes are across the board tbh, it’s the same in all the supermarkets and sounds like profits have gone up so pretty much all
in it together

LottoLaura · 22/01/2023 16:54

M&S has actually raised prices a lot less than it’s competitors, some weeks depending on what I buy my M&S shop is cheaper than if I were to buy the same items in Tesco

gogohmm · 22/01/2023 16:54

@TodayInahurry

Restaurants here are all full on Friday- Sunday to the point we need book 2 weeks ahead for most restaurants in our town, obviously Wetherspoons and the lounge aside as they don't take bookings.

Honper · 22/01/2023 16:55

@LottoLaura same. Plus Tesco can fuck off, the two tiered pricing bastards.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 22/01/2023 16:57

im happy with the prices, but then I don’t use them for everything. Their boxes Chinese takeaway was perfect for last date night (£14 and the oven times on the food actually worked so things were ready at the same time and didn’t need varying temperatures). Their Xmas food was delicious. Their eggs were recently the cheapest and were good quality.

Also they do offers on veg, and even where it’s pricier than Aldi - you literally get more. Cauliflower and Savoy cabbage heads are double the size I get elsewhere.

for clothes, I am now (after many years) impressed by the quality. I just bought a new cardigan and it was very reasonable (£29).

StaunchMomma · 22/01/2023 16:57

Everything's gone up everywhere!

I doubt people would even bother with M&S if they were budgeting.

Mumsanetta · 22/01/2023 16:58

I do weekly shop at Sainsburys and Waitrose and do top up shop in M&S for nice meat (eg steak) and fruit and veg. I’m not particularly price sensitive but find it’s fairly priced for the quality - there’s not much price difference between M&S blueberries and Sainsburys blueberries but I throw away half a punnet of the latter because they’re usually manky.

GetDownkeith · 22/01/2023 16:58

Tbh i find M&S comparable now to Tesco. Some things are more expensive but some things are cheaper. It averages out. I get my shopping there if I'm in town got to Morrisons and Lidl if I'm not and it is never significantly more if at all when i go to M&S.
Have started buying most of my work clothes there now too great for basics and prices good.

Inyournightgarden · 22/01/2023 16:59

Greenshake · 22/01/2023 16:07

The price jumps are quite high. The Indian takeaway for 2 box went from £10 to £12 overnight

What time of day would you expect them to go up?

if a price rises it’s usually a one off hit like this rather than 15 staggered increases over time

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/01/2023 16:59

The clothes on the other hand are really reasonable ATM, either that or everything else is so expensive it's the first time ever Marks has seemed cheap. Probably the latter.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 22/01/2023 17:00

I pop into M&S after going to the gym and the staples like milk, bread, eggs, butter etc are priced about the same as in Asda.

Then I nosy about and see what’s got a yellow sticker on.

Asda is my nearest supermarket and the prices are rising rapidly.

Honper · 22/01/2023 16:55

3 tier. Normal, clubcard and clubcard+

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 22/01/2023 17:01

DewinDwl · 22/01/2023 16:52

Eh? I bought 3 for £8 yesterday...

You bought three boxes of chicken for £8. Well prices must be different then, as it was £10 now £12.

Arniesleftleg · 22/01/2023 17:01

There half tins of beans are the best and only 35p, so about the same as sainsbos. Some fruit and veg is good value, and dried pasta etc but I agree, some of the frozen foods are ridiculously priced. the Christmas party foods were insanely expensive. I popped to good old Aldi and got pretty much the same sort of stuff.

Riverlee · 22/01/2023 17:02

M and S have always been known to be a little more pricey than other supermarkets.

However, in another fairly recent thread, their pasta was cheaper than other supermarkets.
