Forget Sunak's seatbelt, what about Zahawi's taxes?

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2023 12:33

Our former Chancellor, it would seem, is only able to say that he has paid his taxes in full, because he realised the gig was up, he'd been caught and went to HMRC to sort it out.

And the reason it hasn't been a bigger story is that the litigious Mr Zahawi hired a firm of lawyers to send off threatening letters to anyone investigating, stating, untruthfully, that these letters had to remain confidential.

Calculations suggest that if he had to pay £3.7 million in back-taxes, this would imply £27 million in undeclared income, representing about a 1/4 of his net worth. This, therefore, is not small change, or a tiny oversight.

The timeline of events is worth reading, here www.taxpolicy.org.uk/2023/01/19/zahawi_story/

Not sure what the fine is for not wearing a seatbelt, but Zahawi had to pay a 30% penalty on his unpaid taxes, meaning that his claims that his taxes were filed and paid correctly is untrue.

He was Chancellor of the Exchequer while this was going on.

No wonder he was so supportive of Boris, going as far as to say teachers should remain impartial when discussing lawbreaking politicians

www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4480290-Teachers-should-remain-impartial-on-matters-of-lawbreaking-by-politicians-says-Zahawi

Of course whether his tax-dodging is illegal depends on whether it counts as tax avoidance or tax evasion. No idea on that front, given how easily the rich seem to get away with this stuff.

Yes, that's him, the St Petersburg troll farm and the Wagner Private Military Corporation killing Ukraine citizens.

Makes sense to help him harass journalists then. You wouldn't want him as an enemy by the sounds of it.
Does he donate to the Tory party, is he going to be their next treasurer?

IClaudine · 23/01/2023 22:33

Does anyone ever feel it is a waste of time trying to be a decent person? We all just get shafted. Better to be a corrupt, venal bastard and feather your nest as thickly as possible.

But I doubt very much they are happy.

Brilliant sacking letter and response!

Sunak: you should have told us you were committing tax evasion, you are such a great person we don't care about that, but more you got caught I have to sack you (please continue to take £85k as an mp)

Zaharia: I'm brilliant and only got sacked because the bloody journalists kept on talking even though I threatened them

I can’t believe threatening journalists didn’t work.

Does anyone know why the Tory party treasurer is one of Hosni Mubarak's ex ministers?

I am a bit confused myself - both from the Guardian:

2022
Anneliese Dodds, chair of the Labour party, criticised the appointment. “Just when you think the Conservatives have plumbed the depths of sleaze and scandal we have this: a billionaire who was a part of Hosni Mubarak’s autocratic regime being put in charge of drumming up donations

2011
Tony Blair has described Hosni Mubarak, the beleaguered Egyptian leader, as "immensely courageous and a force for good"

www.theguardian.com/world/2011/feb/02/tony-blair-mubarak-courageous-force-for-good-egypt

"a force for good" - wow.

@Clavinova it is really very simple. The Tory party think that a suitable person to be their treasurer is someone who used to be the Minister in a despotic regime.
That no one is very much surprised by this tells us a lot about the state of the current Tory party. I suppose at least it is not another Russian paid for by Putin....

According to Tony Blair, the 'despotic ruler' was a "force for good" - now there's a glowing reference if ever I saw one.

What was the strategy?? Did Keir Starmer not have any concerns at the time?

@Clavinova are you aware that Tony Blair hasn't been Prime Minister for more than 15 years?

Roussette · 31/01/2023 14:51

Whilst you are still here Clavinova... I wonder what you think of Zahawi's non apology for tax dodging in his letter acknowledging he was sacked? Also, do you think he should still stand as an MP, knowing he has evaded tax whilst Chancellor of this country?

Interestingly, Stratford on Avon (his constituency) are sounding a tad pissed off at him.

To be fair - Labour's last Chancellor in office (Alastair Darling) also claimed to have made a "mistake" with his finances although he did apologise;

June 2009
Alistair Darling's future as chancellor seemed under threat today after Gordon Brown said that he had made a "mistake" in one of his parliamentary expense claims...

It was also reported that Darling "flipped" the location of his second home four times in four years...

The Tory treasurer served as a transport minister in Egypt from 2006 to 2009.

HappyHolidai · 31/01/2023 15:23

This thread has gone weird... Zahawi tried to avoid tax, was picked up by HMRC and coughed up several million, with a penalty. He simultaneously lied for a long time that his tax was fine, didn't declare the dispute when appointed to Cobinet - not even as Chancellor FFS - and spent lots of money on lawyers in an attempt to stop journalists or anyone else digging into the story and finding any of this out.

Sunak was pissed off and although he should have sacked him instantly, got the Ethics Advisor to do some work, which in fairness produced an excellent letter indicating 7 occasions on which Zahawi had broken the ministerial code. Sunak then sacked Zahawi - inevitably.

If anyone hasn't read the letter from the Ethics Advisor it is here and actually pretty shocking even if we acknolwefge that the bar of behaviour was dramatically lowered by Boris Johnson.
