Forget Sunak's seatbelt, what about Zahawi's taxes?

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2023 12:33

Our former Chancellor, it would seem, is only able to say that he has paid his taxes in full, because he realised the gig was up, he'd been caught and went to HMRC to sort it out.

And the reason it hasn't been a bigger story is that the litigious Mr Zahawi hired a firm of lawyers to send off threatening letters to anyone investigating, stating, untruthfully, that these letters had to remain confidential.

Calculations suggest that if he had to pay £3.7 million in back-taxes, this would imply £27 million in undeclared income, representing about a 1/4 of his net worth. This, therefore, is not small change, or a tiny oversight.

The timeline of events is worth reading, here www.taxpolicy.org.uk/2023/01/19/zahawi_story/

Not sure what the fine is for not wearing a seatbelt, but Zahawi had to pay a 30% penalty on his unpaid taxes, meaning that his claims that his taxes were filed and paid correctly is untrue.

He was Chancellor of the Exchequer while this was going on.

No wonder he was so supportive of Boris, going as far as to say teachers should remain impartial when discussing lawbreaking politicians

www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4480290-Teachers-should-remain-impartial-on-matters-of-lawbreaking-by-politicians-says-Zahawi

Of course whether his tax-dodging is illegal depends on whether it counts as tax avoidance or tax evasion. No idea on that front, given how easily the rich seem to get away with this stuff.

Michael Crick investigated the forgery of 2 signatures when Zahawi was supplying Tesco products that he didnt have a licence to sell. He was working for Jeffrey Archer at the time! Up to now everyone has been too scared to speak out. Hopefully finally now a few people will feel able to do so about this and some other business experiences.

He took no shares in You Gov despite setting it up and being entitled to 50%. He put his 50% share in an offshore trust in his fathers name but then later received the £27million from the trust and carelessly forgot he had it despite receiving it in the last few years. How can anyone defend this!!

People defended a 56 year old having a birthday party whilst denying that opportunity to millions of children.
I have come to the conclusion they will defend anything.

But they needed those parties. They were working really hard. And they were ambushed by a cake so it isn’t really fair to blame them.

They were just a bit careless with videos, photos and cake crumbs.

I'm so over anything this government does; I despise them - biggest bunch of criminals ever to be in office. No fucker should be 'resigning' - he should be sacked (along with many others!) and made to face criminal charges.

The scary thing is though, no matter what they do you can't guarantee they'll be out of office in the next election - the British public are fools and will continue to vote for those that actively make their lives worse if the media tell them to. It's all just very depressing - I avoid the 'news' these days, it just makes me angry.

No doubt he'll be on 'I'm a celeb' next year and the masses will be shouting at those who object to #bekind #weallmakemistakes 🙄

One giant grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr is all I have to give right now. Sunak is a disgrace. Same old Tory shit.

noblegiraffe · 23/01/2023 17:50

Voters of all parties think he should resign.

We know this thanks to YouGov, no wonder he shoved those shares somewhere he couldn't see them.

Here is the Daily Mail's most recent take on the matter.
I reckon gone in 24 hours.

Ironic that YouGov, the company he founded, has a poll saying he should resign....

You couldn't make it up could you

Luckily we have a Prime Minister who promised "integrity and humility".

Bigweekend · 23/01/2023 19:45

I don't understand how or why anyone is trying to defend this situation. Why does he want to stay in the job in the face of this (it's not that he needs the money, clearly!) and why do his colleagues want him to?

They really do live on another planet when they can say things like not paying £3m in tax was an oversight. [Grin]

The thing is Zahawi is so talented, no one else could really do the job nearly as well as he can.

Anyway, once we are done with Zahawi can we discuss why the Tories think it is appropriate to have a former member of Hosni Mubarak's government as their party treasurer?

YogaLite · 23/01/2023 20:37

@jgw1, not sure if it's the same person but the party treasurer with a middle-eastern sounding name has recently moved from that role to work for NZ..

It is hard to keep track of the various party treasurers. I think the one now working for NZ is a previous dubious one.

Private Eye regularly comment on it, but what they say doesn't seem to register all that much.

This is the one who was married to the daughter of a Russian oligarch. The oligarch gave money to him or his daughter that got donated to the Tory party in a roundabout way using some offshore trusts and raised the interest of the national crime agency.

which reminds me the government have to respond to the ECHR about failing to investigate Russian interference into the 2016 referendum in this week’s other corruption story.

DuncinToffee · 23/01/2023 21:57

Talking about Russia, hacked emails reveal how the Treasury, under Rishi Sunak, helped a sanctioned oligarch and Putin ally sue a British journalist in UK courts. This is during Johnson's time as PM

That'll be the same Prigozhin who runs the Wagner group that are a bunch of thugs who travel the world fighting wherever they will be paid and that suits Putin and his allies. So not just your regular oligarch.

DuncinToffee · 23/01/2023 22:14

Yes, that's him, the St Petersburg troll farm and the Wagner Private Military Corporation killing Ukraine citizens.
