Home hairdresser etiquette

I really hate going to the hairdressers so am thinking of opting for a home hairdresser to give me a wet cut. I know when you go to a salon its the done thing to give a tip to the stylist but do you tip a home stylist ?

I would personally, especially as they are going to be a lot cheaper than the salon.

SnarkyBag · 20/01/2023 19:25

I used to but stopped they were quite pricey for a home hairdresser plus I had to wash my own hair and sweep up the cuttings so not exactly a salon experience! Considering their low overheads I didn’t feel they were doing too badly without a tip.

It's not normal to tip hairdressers in the salon or at home in the UK.

I always give a small tip to my home hair dresser. Shes lovely and puts me at complete ease.

It is. I always tip. I don't know anyone who doesn't.

Krakenes · 20/01/2023 19:47

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t tip their hairdresser either. I’d probably tip more if they came to my house.

Mushroo · 20/01/2023 19:49

I don’t know anyone who does tip their hairdresser! I think it’s a generational thing

Whataretheodds · 20/01/2023 20:00

I wouldn't tip a home hairdresser. I clean up, make them a tea, wash my own hair and provide the towels.

I don't really get why I should tip at the salon tbh.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 20/01/2023 20:01

I'd tip in a salon if they were an employee, but for a self employed hairdresser I wouldn't/don't.

SirenSays · 20/01/2023 20:02

No but I do make sure to have her favourite snacks and drinks in for when she's finished.

I don’t because it’s expensive enough as it is. We have minimum wage in this country and hairdressers are not exactly at the bottom of the wages table. Do you tip the cashier at the supermarket? The person who serves you in McDonald’s? The bin men? The bus driver? Why tip an arbitrary person you’re paying for a service?

Spck · 20/01/2023 20:08

Never tip a home hairdresser - the money for the job is going directly to them and it isn’t a salon experience.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 20/01/2023 20:20

I don't ever tip my hairdresser, I can barely afford the £100+ as it is!

I don't know anyone who does. Like PP says, you are paying for a service already, no need for extra payment.

junebirthdaygirl · 20/01/2023 21:39

I tip if it's a young person washing my hair in the salon that presumably is on low wages but l never tip the owner. Same for a home visit..as they have few overheads eg expensive electricity these days..l wouldn't tip.

jackstini · 20/01/2023 21:44

Always tipped if I had great service, including at home

I always get an appointment, flexible moving of dates if needed, one service free etc.

I don't know anyone who doesn't tip their hairdresser/manicurist/beautician

TotteringByGenteely · 20/01/2023 21:45

I always tip my home hairdresser. I usually give her about 10%.

ohdearydearieme · 20/01/2023 21:46

Always, always tip.

That's makes no sense whatsoever!

If you employed a tutor for your child, and they charged £30 an hour, would you whack them £33?! Course you wouldn't.

Madness.

Fprince · 20/01/2023 21:49

I'm a care assistant, earn barely above minimum wage, I think I give a great service too but no one tips me, yet some of you think I should tip my hairdresser who charges me £50 for a cut that takes an hour.

OldTinHat · 20/01/2023 21:50

My home hairdresser was more expensive than a salon even before a tip. I'm back at a salon and, with the tip, costs the same as a home visit and without the hair to sweep up!

Absolutely this 👏

Edwardandtubbs · 20/01/2023 21:52

I tipped mine when I had a home hairdresser because we were technically outside her area and I knew it would help towards petrol...she was excellent and worth it.
However I don't think you need to, and I'm another who never tips in the salon. It's pricey enough as it is!

Greensleevevssnotnose · 20/01/2023 21:54

I tip my hairdresser £20 at Christmas and a fiver every visit. The lady who does extensions at my home I don't tip.

TotteringByGenteely · 20/01/2023 22:01

@bellswithwhistles I'd round the 10% up and give £35.
