Home hairdresser etiquette

I really hate going to the hairdressers so am thinking of opting for a home hairdresser to give me a wet cut. I know when you go to a salon its the done thing to give a tip to the stylist but do you tip a home stylist ?

I’ve never tipped a hairdresser- they are paid pretty well to do their job & unless there was something that went way above & beyond, I don’t see why I need to pay more than the advertised price 🤷‍♀️

I’ve had the same hairdresser for over 20 years. I first went to her when she worked in a salon, I followed her (not in a stalkerish way!) when she moved to a different salon, then she was a mobile hairdresser, now she has a little salon in her house. I tip her and give her a small (£10/£15) present for her birthday & Xmas. It’s worth it to me when I consider the impact of having to find another hairdresser know knows me and my hair like she does.

@pocketvenuss I only tip my hairdresser at Christmas as a gift. I used to pay a round sum and let her keep the change, which has gone from £5 to nothing as she has increased her prices.
She gets the full amount that I pay as she is self employed.
I don't think it's 'normal' to tip hairdressers but it does seem like people are 50/50

It's not normal to tip hairdressers in the salon or at home in the UK.

Agreed. I'll take a nice bottle of something at Christmas and usually tip an apprentice if they do the washing. I don't know a single person who does tip at the hairdresser.

I have never tipped, I pay by card and there is never an option.

I always tip my hair dresser and go every 8 weeks. She does great work, I want her to know how much I appreciate her and how hard she works to give me exactly what I want every single time.

bert3400 · 22/01/2023 00:03

I wouldn't tip a home hairdresser as they are directly making the money. I do tip in a salon if it's not the owner, who does my hair. I also tip cab drivers & Waiters - not sure why, just feels the thing to do 🙄

There is no expectation of tipping either in salon or with a mobile hairdresser.
Some people choose to or have a weird idea they 'have to' and that is up to them.
Generally though, if someone is self employed, there is less of a need to tip, as obviously they set their own rates for the job.
If they come to your house, it is normal (in my house anyway) to put the kettle on and offer them a cuppa, and of course you are using your own power, towels shampoo etc (if having something done that needs them), but, as they have asked you for the amount they want, there is then no need, or expectation to give them more than that.

I’ve never tipped my hairdresser and it’s never crossed my mind too. Why would I? She hires a chair and literally keeps the money that I pay her. Why would I give her extra unnecessarily?

Mulledwineandberries · 22/01/2023 00:52

Lots of people on here saying the hairdresser gets to keep the full amount, clearly have no idea about the cost of running a business.
To name a few things, from the fee you pay they will have to cover products/stock, laundering of towels/gowns, scissor sharpening/equipment maintenance, travel, tax/ni, no paid holiday so earnings have to cover holiday throughout the year, pension contributions, insurances, travel, phone bill, printing, accountancy. Plus their skills for which they’ve trained and usually continue to do so.

I’m not a hairdresser but I’m self employed and I wish, very much, that I got to keep everything thing I earn.

UsingChangeofName · 23/01/2023 14:34

Obviously @Mulledwineandberries , but anyone who is self employed will have costed all that in to the amount they decide to charge you, (or should have) with what they want to 'earn' or 'keep' added on to what it costs them to work. I think that is the point people are making.

My hairdresser works from from home, I never tip her. She has an amazing income, nothing is declared to HMRC!
